Running a business from home has its advantages, including no commute, a more accommodating work schedule, fresh coffee and home-cooked meals at any time you want.

But running a business from home using a home wireless local area network (WLAN) with your computer may lead to thievery of confidential information and hacker or virus penetration unless proper actions are taken. As WLANs send information back and forth over radio waves, someone with the right type of receiver in your immediate area could be picking up the transmission, thus acquiring access to your computer.

Here is a list of things that you should consider as a result of implementing a home wireless network setup used your business:

Viruses could be loaded onto your laptop which could be transferred to the company’s network when you go back to work.

Up to 75 per cent of home wireless network WLAN users do not have standard security features installed, and 20 per cent are left completely open as default configurations and are not secured, but are made for the users to have their network up and running ASAP.

It is recommended that home wireless network router/access point system setups be always done though a wired client.

Always change the default administrative password on your home wireless network router/access points to a secured password.

Enable at least 128-bit WEP encryption on both card and access point. Change your WEP keys periodically. If equipment does not support at least 128-bit WEP encryption, consider replacing it. Although there are security issues with WEP, it represents minimum level of security, and it should be enabled.

Change the default SSID on your router/access point to a hard to guess name. Setup your computer device to connect to this SSID by default.

Setup router/access points so as to not broadcast the SSID. The same SSID needs to be setup on the client side manually. This feature may not be available on all equipment.

Setup your home wireless network router to block anonymous internet requests or pings.

On each computer having a wireless network card, network connection properties should be configured to allow connection to Access Point Networks Only. Computer to computer (peer to peer) connections should not be allowed.

Enable MAC filtering. Deny connection to wireless network for unspecified MAC addresses. MAC or physical addresses are accessible through your computer device wireless network connection setup and they are physically written on network cards. When adding new wireless cards / computer to the network, their MAC addresses should be registered with the router /access point.

Your home wireless network router should have firewall features enabled and demilitarized zone (DMZ) feature disabled. Periodically test your hardware and personal firewalls using Shields Up test available at http://www.grc.com. All computers should have a properly configured personal firewall in addition to a hardware firewall.

Update router/access point firmware when new versions become available.

Locate router/access points away from strangers so they cannot reset the router/access point to default settings. Also, locate router/access points in the middle of the building rather than near windows to limit signal coverage outside the building.

You should know that nothing is 100%. While none of the actions suggested above will provide full 100% protection, countermeasures do exist that will help. The good collection of suggested preventative actions contained herein can help you deter an intruder trying to access your home wireless network. This deterrant then makes other insecure networks easier targets for the intruder to persue.

Compact Spinning
Protruding fibres from the body of yarn, known as hairiness, is a characteristic feature of staple fibre yarns. This gives the yarns and fabrics made from them a softer and comfortable feel. At the same time, hairiness has some undesirable effects as pointed below
1.Full ralisation of strength of fibres is not realised as part of the fibres are not integrated in the yarn
2.Rough feel is given to yarns
3.Variation in hairniess is a source of weft bars and warp way streaks in fabric.
4.Long protruding hairs from yarn contribute to multiple breaks in weaving and fabric faults like stitches and floats.
Compact spinning is designed to reduce hairiness in yarn. In traditional spinning fibres in the selvedge of strand emerging from front roller nip do not get fully integrated into yarn because of restriction to twist flow by the spinning triangle. These fibres therefore show up partly as protruding hairs or wild fibres. To overcome this effect, the spinning triangle is nearly eliminated in compact spinning by incorporating a condensing zone after main drafting zone. The condensing zone has a revolving perforated apron with suction underneath. The fibres are collected on the perforated track and thus get condensed. The width of strand under front roller nip is substantially reduced and this enables twist to flow right up to nip. As a result hairiness is substantially reduced. Compact spinning systems are offered by Rieter(Comforspin), Suessen(Elite) and ITV-Zinser among others. Benefits claimed from comfort spinning are
1.15-20% reduction in hairiness of yarn, the reduction being more pronounced in long length hairs
2.10-15% improvement in yarn tenacity
3.Twist in yarn can be reduced by 10% while maintaining same yarn strength
4.Better evennes of diameter and hairiness.
5.Better abrasion resistance of yarn leading to less end breaks in weaving. 6.Loom shed droppings and linting in knitting are reduced
7.Size% can be reduced by 30-50%
8.Singeing can be omitted
9.Reduced pilling and better dye uptake in fabric

(GPS) Global Positioning Systems - The World Grows Smaller

Gary Mialocq, Ph.D.

As a young child in the first grade not long after the end of
WW2, I remember looking at a globe in the classroom and seeing
“Unexplored Territory” in several places. Well, times have
certainly changed. Now, with the new technology, GPS, it is
becoming very difficult to get lost.

GPS, or global positioning system, is a tool that is used to
measure distance and to help pinpoint location any place in the
world. The fact is that it is an excellent tool that can do so
much more than just tell you where you are. And, it is being
used in everything from heart rate monitors to automobiles. This
is amazing technology.

There are 24 satellites orbiting the earth at various locations
at an altitude of 12,000 feet. They are always transmitting
information through digital radio signals that tell the
transmitters where they are and the exact time. They are so
precise that they transmit time to the billionth of a second in
accuracy.

Although first developed by the Department of Defense for
military purposes, the GPS has found its way into society with
many non-governmental functions. Let’s examine a few:

Automobiles. You can use this system to drive from one location
to another without getting lost. it can help to track a car that
has been stolen. It works by transmitting data to the satellite
receivers that are then sent to the authorities. Within seconds,
you can know your car’s location. It can also be of great help
in emergency situations. The transmitted information can be sent
to the authorities to alert them that you are in trouble. GPS
jumps in and helps to find your location. Many vehicles are now
being outfitted with this as standard equipment.

GPS devices are now use for recreational uses for the outdoor
sportsman such as camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, or boating
and can be an excellent way to make sure that you don’t get lost.

Companies are putting GPS to use as well. It virtually
eliminates moonlighting with company vehicles. It reduces
accidents and lowers insurance premiums by promoting safe
employee driving habits and even creates reports of miles driven
by each vehicle.

Think your spouse if being unfaithful? Don’t hire a high priced
private investigator. These devices work so well because they
are covert. Some are small enough to hide in a purse or in the
car. There now have cell phones equipped with GPS devices. Not
only can you locate someone right now, but you can also pull up
a history of where the unit has been.

In summary, you won’t be finding any more maps as I did as a
child marked “Unexplored territory”. GLOBAL POSITIONING

I’ve been searching the Internet for blogging sites for a fair while now and recently I came across a whole blogging community, which has grabbed my interest greatly. It’s called Joe User and it’s a site that many bloggers all around the globe are partaking in. It is very well organized into categories such as Best Articles, Newest blog entries, Top blogging sites, New sites and Most hit-on bloggers. The blogs range from very personal life introspection to serious analysis of current affairs in the media.

The aspect that has appealed to me the most is the very personal type of blogging community. Many people are talking about their feelings and issues about life with people that technically they have never met face to face. However, the type of camaraderie I’ve ‘witnessed’ as a bystander has truly amazed me. These people talk to each other as though they are extremely close friends, and the strange thing is I think this is the reality.

When one person has something important happen to them in their life, up to 100 or more comments will arrive under their blog entry with advice and information as well as emotional support from their blogging friends. Of course there are some differences in opinion, but the general perspective seems to be one of a positive approach to humanity. People are really spilling out their souls to each other, and then accepting criticism as well as discussing possible solutions to problems. I just find this to be truly inspirational, a human community or ‘tribe’ that has formed simply because of the Internet’s existence.

These people must spend a lot of time communicating with each other. Some are writing new entries everyday, as well as articles and conversations. The conversations usually happen in the ‘comments’ section where one can see that these people often stay up into the late hours of the morning, blogging to each other back and forth. The amount of love shared by these arbitrary acquaintances is astounding. One could perceive the whole experience as a form of therapy but I think it is much more than that. I believe this is a sign of a revolution. The coming of the New Human Tribe has begun.

If random bloggers can evolve into a community of people who trust, respect, and are intimate and united with each other this says a lot for the human condition. People are tired of the segregated, separatist reality of countries, cultures, races and religions. These group blogging sites, or collective on-line journals as I now like to think of them, are symbolic of the future connectedness of all of humanity. It may take a hundred years, or a thousand, or maybe only fifty, but it definitely looks like there’s hope yet for the warring, greedy humans. One day we all may be ‘one’ again in our minds as well as our physical forms.

Faith

By Punkerslut

In the realm of philosophy, much like in the realm of science,
it is important that we value the method that we reach our
conclusions. What often separates different philosophies is how
they approach questions. A different philosophy will start out
with different premises, before building upon those premises,
and then — ultimately — applying them to the real world
(sometimes referred to as “Applied Ethics” when dealing with
morality). Often times, though, while one philosophy may start
out with a premise and another with a different premise, or a
“given,” they will most likely use the same or similar methods
for approaching their questions. “What is the meaning of life?”
is an ancient philosophy question. “How do the organs in animals
work to ensure the survival of the creature?” is a biology
question. Both can be approached with the same method of
answering a question. The two primary methods of approaching a
question are Faith and Reason. While all logical philosophies
attempt to answer the questions of life using Reason, there are
still a great deal of illogical philosophies which use Faith as
their foundation. The two theories of approaching questions may
be summed up as follows. Reason believes that an idea should be
supported with evidence, demonstration, observation, anything
that could serve as a reason to support the hypothesis. Faith
believes in the idea that something is too noble or too divine
to need to be supported with evidence, and that it ought to be
believed regardless of what our natural senses tell us.

I will say this of Reason: it has provided science with an
accurate method of discerning truth from myth — it has given
the common person the ability to understand and investigate
matters for themselves — it has empowered the individual with
the right to judge truth from fiction, it has given to each
seeker a light to follow. The man who believed in Reason said,
“Why should I believe it?” and the man who believed in Faith
responded, “You don’t need a reason to believe it.” Religion,
psuedo-science, and government gained the respect of Faith,
while Reason struggled to survive in the darkness. Science, real
science, was banned from the churches and the governments.
Investigation was a crime, and every soul that desired to know
was a criminal. I defend Reason because it supports those values
which I hold close to me: compassion, truth, fairness, justice.
But the support of those ideas is only coincidental. I will
follow the footsteps of reason — of a method that requires
evidence for every theory — to whatever beliefs it brings me
to, to whatever suspicions it confirms or disconfirms. And when
we ask a theory to support itself with sound evidence, we find
that Humanitarianism gains worth and Rationalism is deserving of
respect.

I will say this of Faith: it has been the foundation of every
religion, every cult, every sect, every religious terrorist
organization that desired to gain advocates whose will greatly
exceeded their intelligence. When a religion asks that its
followers believe all that it declares, and to do so without
evidence, it speaks volumes of the intent and meaning of that
religion. These churches and mosques, they will keep their
followers in the shadows of millenium past. Evolution is still
howled as the great enemy of faith. It simply has the greatest
following of scientists and evidence. It’s not scientifically
that any religion has ever tried to debunk Evolution. They
brought forth no evidence. They claimed no new discoveries.
Their only tactic was to point to a tattered, old Bible — to
flip through the pages, and read the rancid words, almost as if
they were pure gold. Faith does not require investigation, or
evidence, or demonstration, or observation, or logical
deductions. It simply requires that a person believe, in spite
of what evidence may say: it requires that a person blindfolds
themselves when demonstration is shown, to use earplugs when
anyone speaks of logic, and to turn away at every reason for
them to believe what Faith tells them is wrong. Those cults and
sects which have utilized violence for the realization of their
apocalyptic future — they required nothing but the willpower
and a great deal of Faith.

In this world, with the struggles for solidarity among the
workers, with the fights for a real Democracy in this
Consumerist society — with the battles of life that have been
going on as long as there have been “haves” and “have nots” –
there is a real question: what is there to aid in the
advancement of civilization? I have yet to see a Capitalist
point to any evidence that Free Trade brings about prosperity.
There is a great deal of talk on hypothetical matters based on
unfounded conclusions, of what will happen or what will not
happen, and then some praised deduction that, in the end, the
worker is benefited. No where among all the talk of the
Capitalist does he bring about a single strand of evidence, a
single proof, that child labor, that slavery, that war and
Imperialism, that working 16 hours a day — never does he prove
these things, but rather, he says, by allowing them, we are
becoming free. Faith supports these things, and it is why
religionists have so often sided with the Capitalist doctrine.
The church has been the enemy of the workers for centuries now.
In the beginning, in those Feudalist days of old, it has been
the benefiter of slavery, and the greatest owner of slaves. And
what is there to support these ideologies, these malicious
creeds of men? Nothing, but Faith: the idea that you should
believe regardless of what your heart tells you, in spite of
what your eyes see, regardless of what common sense dictates.
