“Make Me Feel Special”

This quote from George Cummings, says it all.

“Every person you meet in life has a flashing sign on their
chest. It says, ‘Make me feel special’.”

There is no greater thing that we can do in each human
interaction than to make the other person feel special. Now,
this is not done by phony and insincere words, but by creating a
feeling of acceptance in the other person. A feeling that you
know them, their feelings and accept them just the way they are.

And no, you don’t have to agree with everything they say or do.
What you must do ,however, is hear what they say and respect
their right to feel as they feel.

Even marketers no longer believe in ” generic mass marketing”
they strive to make every consumer feel “special” and unique,
even though they (the customer)have purchased the exact same
product as million others have. This is a tall order, but the
business that’s able to do this Specialness” marketing will be
miles ahead in revenues. Why? Because, consumers DON’T buy
products! They buy what products offer or promise to do for
them.

That is why one of the most explosive market is in
self-improvement. It is growing so fast, it’s practically taken
on a life of it’s own. This might seem somewhat contradictory,
because, I have just said humans want to be known and accepted
as they are.

However, every person feels that there is something they want to
improve about themselves and that there is a way to do it. But,
as many of us have learned, we do not make lasting changes
because we were made to feel “unspecial” by harsh criticisms.

We want to to be the author of our self-improvements or what I
call “increased specialness”! So while we want self-discovery
and aim for self-improvement, we NEED to feel special. We will
gravitiate towards any person who can genuinely give us this
“special” feeling. It takes a special person to make every
person that they encounter feel this specialness, but it’s a
goal worth reaching for. It could even bring about world peace!
Now there’s a goal to make you even more “special”.

Reflections Concerning the Translation of Poetry

Thinking about various modes of translating poetry it occurs to me that a translation that respects the rules of grammar must [inevitably] be a false translation of the original [the matter of originality will be discussed below] because a poem — a true poem — is a poem [the repetitiousness is deliberate here] that reflects on poetry as all true poems do while pretending to say something important about life, love, nature, mankind, death, religion, reality or whatever it pretends to be saying — a true poem — regardless of whether it is ancient, classical, romantic, symbolic, modern, contemporary, postmodern or whatever it is or has been made to be — a true poem cannot, must not, will not respect the rules of grammar –

  • grammar is the police of poetry

  • grammar is the IRS of poetry
  • grammar is the CIA of poetry
  • grammar is the Gestapo of poetry
  • grammar is worse than a concentration camp
  • grammar dictates and to dictate is to be dictatorial
  • grammar exterminates true poetry

  • grammar forces the one who translates into submission to the rules of
  • grammar

  • grammar destroys true poetry

The day grammar was invented poetry was enslaved —
only those poets who revolted against this enslavement wrote true poems –
[the readers of these reflections concerning the translation of poetry can make their own list of poets who have revolted — mine is already made]
and so to render the grammarlessness [thank you sam] of a true poem one must not — one cannot be faithful to the original because faithfulness would by necessity [and by obligation] introduce grammar into the new version in whatever language it has been translated –

but there lies the ambiguity, the inescapable ambiguity and the paradox of translating a true poem because a translated poem that rejects the rules of grammar can only be a falsification of the original poem — it has to be a false translation just as a translation that respects the rules of grammar is a false translation –

only the original can be a true poem but since poems always borrow or steal from other poems then the act of poetry is always an act of plagiarization and as such a true poem is in fact a false poem — this is why the act of translating poetry is a futile act just as the act of writing poetry is a futile act since one can never write a true poem — only the first poem was true but it quickly got lost, erased, forgotten into subsequent poems — and so to write poetry is to lose ground [I stole this from my Roumanian friend Emile Cioran] –

[when Cioran told me that I replied] then why kill oneself to write poetry since one always kills oneself too late — why write to say exactly what one wanted to say in the first place or what others have tried to say in vain –

[those who disagree with the above reflections can reflect on the subject by themselves — I merely wanted to share these reflections with those who may not have reflected on the question of translating poetry — or cannot do so] — these reflections apply also to the translation of fiction — I thank you for your attention]

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge
is limited to all we now know and understand, while
imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever
will be to know and understand.”

Albert Einstein, Physicist, 1879-1955

This one quote alone is a pretty compelling reason to learn
how to turn our imaginative genius loose.

All of us have a fairly vivid imagination, but
unfortunately, we do not control it. It controls us. It
runs willy-nilly on its own, painting pictures in our minds
of things that we do NOT want to materialize.

What’s even more alarming is the fact that the same reel of
pictures keeps playing over and over again. There are
statistics that indicate that of the many thousands of
thoughts that we have in the course of a single day, the
vast majority of them are the same old, tired out,
uninspired thoughts that we had earlier in the day, and the
day before, and the day before that, ad nauseum.

Here are some simple visualization exercises that will help
you train your imagination to flex its muscles. You can
perform these anytime, anywhere, and in just a matter of
seconds.

Exercise 1 - Color Me Beautiful

Focus on any object in your immediate vicinity. Mentally
change its color. Some people try to be too literal-minded
about this and claim that they cannot “see” the different
color. Just get a flashing “sense” of it being this
different color. That’s all that is needed.

Run through several colors in rapid succession. Change the
finish from a high gloss to a matte finish. Make it fuzzy.
Make it wet. You can graduate to seeing multi-colored
patterns: plaids, stripes, polka dots, animal prints, etc.

Exercise 2 – Bend Me, Shape Me, Any Way You Want Me

Once again focus on any object. Increase its size, more,
more, even more. Now shrink it back again. Make it so tiny
that it all but disappears. Make it fat and puffy and then
skinny and sunken. Pull it like taffy and make it stretch
and twist and bend and fold. Now turn the object inside
out.

Again, you do not need to “see” every single detail. The
idea is simply to get your imagination to come out and play.
You want it to break free of its well-worn, literal rut, and
more importantly, you want to get comfortable seeing things
that are not yet in your physical world. Let’s do one more…

Exercise 3 – Mental Aroma Therapy

Our sense of smell is by far the strongest sense that we
have. A single aroma is enough to unleash a flood of vivid
memories. Also, olfactory sensations are the first ones to
reach the brain. So not only does smell provide a powerful
link to our recall. It can also serve to stimulate and
excite our imagination.

This exercise consists of simply “recalling” certain odors
that are most pleasant to you. What aromas make you feel
calm? Smell them now. What scents make you feel powerful?
Train yourself to mentally whiff that scent when you’re
feeling small.

Think of smells that make you feel confident, free,
intelligent, rich, kind, playful, or anything else that
occurs to you.

As you go through different odors that cause you to
experience these pleasurable sensations, take note of what
pictures each aroma conjures up for you. What aspect of
these mental scenes pleases you most? (This is a great way
to engage your mind during lost, odd moments.)

These pictures and odors should be remembered and
incorporated into visualizing your goals. The point of
these exercises is to get your logical mind to loosen up, to
release its choke hold on your creative spirit.

Why is this so important? Because the fastest, most
efficient way to achieve any goal is to SEE it in our mind’s
eye. We are to act, feel and give heartfelt thanks as if it
were already a done deal. Some authors call this
“Thinking from the end.”

Giving our imaginations a workout will help us accomplish this.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you
everywhere.” Albert Einstein

On 21 August 2003 Symantec Security Response upgraded the W32.SOBIG.F threat to a category 4.

It is the sixth version of this worm.

SOBIG.F follows a computer worm known as “Blaster,” or “MSBlaster,” which infected at least 500,000 computers all over the world only a week ago. The “Nachi” worm which is designed to protect pcs from “Blaster” caused its own havoc including infiltrating unclassified computers on the Navy-Marine intranet and the collapse of the check-in system of Air Canada.

Associated Press has stated that 1 in 17 emails sent around the world has been infected.

According to Paul Wood of MessageLabs it took anti-virus companies at least 12 hours to release updated software to combat the worm.

W32.Sobig.F@mm is, in fact, a worm, not a virus. This worm sends itself to every email address it finds in files with the following extensions:

  • .TXT

  • .WAB

  • .MHT

  • .HTML

  • .HTM

  • .HLP

  • .EML

  • .DBX

The “SOBIG” worm is found in emails in your inbox with the following subject headings:

  • RE: DETAILS

  • RE: THANK YOU!

  • RE: YOUR APPLICATION

  • RE: YOUR DETAILS

  • RE: DETAILS

  • RE: APPROVED

  • RE: THAT MOVIE

  • RE: WICKED SCREENSAVER

I have personally received emails with all of these subject headings on a daily basis. The body of the email simply refers you to an attached file. It is absolutely critical that you DO NOT open this attachment. It is this attachment that contains the “SOBIG” worm.

The “SOBIG” worm is attached to files with the following names:

  • Movie0045.pif

  • Your_document.pif

  • Thank_you.pif

  • Document_all.pif

  • Details.pif

  • Document_9446.pif

  • Wicked_scr.scr

  • Application.pif

The last day on which the “SOBIG” worm will spread is 9 September, 2003. Although this means email address collection and mass-mailing will stop at that date a computer infected with the worm will still try to download updates from master servers even after this date.

The worm affects Windows 95, 98, Me, Nt, 2000 and XP but leaves Unix, OS/2, Windows 3.x, Macintosh and Linux unaffected.

Thankfully Symantec Security Response has created a removal tool which is free to clean an infected computer. To access Symantec’s free removal tool visit: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sobig.f@mm.html

For a free virus scan visit: http://www.stop-sign.com

This past month’s computer attacks follows a historical trend – virus activity surges when college students have free time on their hands in the summer.

However, there is a suspicion that these kind of virus attacks may be driven by profit motives because worms such as SOBIG.F place a “trojan horse” on infected drives of unsuspecting pc owners which allows spammers to quickly distribute millions of unsolicited emails around the world.

Poorly designed software is declared the main cause of increased virus activity by computer designers as software is often distributed without appropriate amounts of testing.

Microsoft last year announced its intention to slow down software development so that software can be made more safe from infiltration.

Regardless of the cause, here is the reality:

  • Sobig.A was found on January 9 2003 with no expiry.

  • Sobig.B was found on May 18, expiring May 31 2003.

  • Sobig.C was found on May 31, expiring on June 8 2003.

  • Sobig.D was found on June 18, expiring on July 2 2003.

  • Sobig.E was found on June 25, expiring on July 14 2003.

  • Sobig.F was found on August 19, to expire 10 September 2003.

The spread of the SOBIG.F worm is being hailed the fastest ever.

History, therefore, tells us that Sobig.G is, in fact, just around the corner, faster and stronger than each of its predecessors.

As Sobig.F nears its expiry on 10 September 2003 I can almost envisage its evil grin as it declares, “I’ll be back.”

5 ways to super savings when shopping on the internet. Save at least 200 dollars for 1000 dollars of shopping– that is 20% of the total money spent. With common sense and little prudence you can save hundreds of dollars on your holiday shopping bills. From my past experiences, I have chosen the five best practices that will give you the maximum savings. Peruse them, put them into action and email me your numbers on savings.

Comparison Shopping:

Gone are the days when there was no easy way to compare the price of a product at different stores other than visiting the stores. In this new era of cyber-shopping, there are numerous options to compare the price of a product at different locations of the globe. With very little effort, internet would find the best and right price, at the right store for you to save big bucks.

A few days back, I was shopping for a Mini DV camcorder in the price range of $500 to $700. An ardent internet shopper, I researched on brands, their prices and decided to buy a JVC GRD200 Mini DV camcorder. It is (may be “it was”) my belief that Amazon.com delivers the best products at the lowest prices (It does sell the best products, but not at the cheapest prices – at least in this case). As always, I was poised to buy the product from Amazon.

The comparison on the price of this product (via www.shopping.com) revealed that the product was sold as low as $299.00. With further research I understood that the price was indeed 299 US dollars. Delaying no more, I bought the camcorder from this seller instead of my first option – to save only $400.

As I look back, it still perplexes me how I saved $400 on a single buy. Does it not surprise you when you cut down 400 dollars on a single item? Perhaps the most important thing I did was comparing the prices for this product on www.shopping.com. It paid!

Cognizant Shopping:

As a customer, your goal is to buy the best product at the cheapest price. Right?

You agree with me that it is not an intelligent idea to buy a product for 10 dollars when it is sold at 3 dollars less at the near by store. Neither do you accord it a savvy-shopping, to buy a product for 50 dollars when its price can be reduced by 10 dollars via the special store discount/coupon for the product.

Many of us do not realize the power of coupons. They hold tremendous potential for huge savings. Depending on how you use them, a coupon for 10 dollars for every 50 dollars would save 40 dollars over a period of month, assuming shopping once a week. Extrapolating, it is a 200 dollars savings over a 1000 dollar shopping-money. A typical Christmas shopping would amount to these numbers easily.

Although the example seems to be ideal, it resonates the ideas of retails stores like JC Penny or Sears, whose holiday-shopping-placards read “$10 off for every $50 shopping – JC Penny”, “$35 off for every $250 spent on electronics – Sears”. Get into the habit of using the coupons whenever possible to appreciate the savings accumulating into your pockets.

Selective Shopping:

Depending on which state you buy the product from and which store you buy it from, you may or may not be charged a sales tax. If the sale is exempted the sales tax, it is a savings of 6 percent to 9 percent of total sale amount. Each seller clearly indicates if a sales tax would be applied on the sale in the geographical location. Thus, a little cautiousness would translate to a savings as high as 9 percent.

On the downside, you may have to pay for the shipping for the product which in most cases would compare less to the total of sales tax. And, by the way, due to the immense competition among the internet-sellers, you may end up making a bargain by not paying the taxes and not paying for the shipping either. Free shipping – as it is called, is common on many internet sites these days. For an item priced at $1000 you would save as much as $90 as sales tax savings – all you do is pick the right seller.

Early Shopping:

Planning on shopping near the beginning of the season will give you ample time to compare the prices on the product at various sellers. During this process, you will form a ballpark estimate of the item.

Let me remind you that the variation of the price can be any where from few dollars to few hundreds of dollars depending on the original price of the product, which makes it necessary for you to do this homework as to know the kind-of best price before you finalize on buying the product.

In addition, sellers usually hike the prices as the holiday season approaches so that they can display higher discount-numbers on their sale-advertisements. The higher discounts not only attract more customers but also compensate and compete the prices for the similar items at other stores. The fact is, even when you see greater discounts, you would not realize tangible savings around the holiday season unless you end up getting an early bird discount. I am somewhat reluctant to say this is true all the times, but is the case in several occasions.

Team Shopping:

Like in a workplace, collaborative shopping produces amazing results. You are not mandated to go to a shopping mall as a team, but exchanging ideas and information as a team would be advantageous.

Talk to your friends about their experience buying a similar item in the past. Gather information about the quality of the product, prices at different stores, seller reputation, etc that play a vital role on your buying-decision. Moreover, ask your friends and relatives if they could share any discount coupons. If preferred customer, they would share the coupons with you, which in turn would give you the opportunity to cut down on the final price. Beware that some sellers distribute non-transferable coupons in which cases you need to be creative to maximize your savings.

So finally:

These ideas only scratch the surface of the iceberg. You can get innovative and creative to find the best deals on the market. Websites like www.techbargains.com, www.ecoupons.com, etc are some of the few sites that gather information about the greatest deals of the day. Internet has many such great money-saving ideas.

Armed with this information, I am sure you would be able to craft a good plan which would save you many dollars each shopping trip. If you are meticulous enough, you would save at least $200 for every $1000 dollars spent. I guarantee it. If you deny my proposition or have a different opinion write to me and I will help you see the potential of putting the above facts to work.
