“Are We Diluting Our Own Profits…
With Too Many ‘Bonuses’?”
copyright 2001 John Evans

When we offer something for sale, it’s a great
incentive to give a bonus to the purchaser. It
makes buyers feel good about buying from us, and
it makes us feel good that we have given something
of real value.

When ebooks started coming out, many were free, while
others had to be purchased. They all, of course, are
(usually) valuable in their content, and also valuable
to the author. Why to the author? Simply because the
ebook carried the author’s messages, or links, which is
the main reason for an ebook in the first place.

But somewhere along the line, the whole idea of bonuses
seems to have gotten out of hand. How? Follow this
scenario:

Marketer #1 writes an ebook, selling it for $17.95.
As a bonus for ordering, you also receive 2 more ebooks,
free if charge.

Not bad, so far.

But then, along comes Marketer #2, who buys from #1,
and ADDS 3 more bonuses to the ebook offer. Now we can
receive 5 bonuses for our $17.95 purchase. Marketer #3
now buys the package from #2, adds yet another 5 bonuses,
for a total of 10 bonuses. And on, and on, and on.

I’ve seen packages out there that are giving 15 and
20 bonuses with your purchase.

Then, of course, some of those original $17.95 ebooks
are finding there way into these ‘packages.’ The very
same ebooks that many of us are still trying to sell.

How many of those $17.95 ebooks have you seen “on sale”
for $1.00? Or given away free? Plus umpteen bonuses?

To me, that’s really diluting the profits of everyone
trying to sell ebooks. There’s always someone willing
to ‘give away the store’, in an effort to knock out
the competition.

There are some ebook authors out there, though, that
seem to have the right idea. When their ebook is
purchased, there is a stipulation that the ebook CANNOT
BE GIVEN AWAY, OR RE-PACKAGED. And it must be SOLD for
(between 2 price ranges).

But, even then, I’ve seen these very same ebooks being
GIVEN, and RE-PACKAGED against the author’s wishes.
And this, as I see it, violates the author’s copyright.

Bonuses are great instruments if used correctly.

But ARE we?

Some folks have spent several years of their lives collecting valuable and rare coins. They store them in special books that are designed for this purpose, or they keep them in a bank vault, taking them out only on occasion to enjoy their prized possessions. Perhaps one day the coins will be passed down to a family member or be sold for profit.

But there is an easier way to search for lost coins for gain. While they do not have the value of old or rare coins that are recognized and prized by antique collectors, they nevertheless offer their own special challenge and sometimes render an unexpected dividend when one turns out to be a rare find.

Set aside a sturdy container for your soon-to-be-found coins. Make sure it can’t tip, become misplaced, or get broken by excited kids or a pet. Then start your own treasure hunt as you find time. You can take a few minutes each day, or you can save this hobby for a period of several hours after work or over the weekend on occasion. Don’t expect to find a lot all at once. Rather, be prepared to put in the time that will gradually lead to a harvest of riches.

You can get a silver locating device or a magnetic pole for finding loose coins in ditches, under cars, or in other hard-to-reach places. Or simply rely on your eyes to identify those gleaming metal circlets of potential wealth. Start in your home. Check under the sofa and chair cushions as well as under these large pieces. Look beneath the dressers, on closet floors, in all the household drawers, and inside the pockets of various clothing.

Little by little, expand your search. Check your car thoroughly, including between and under the seats. Don’t forget the toy box, basement, and attic. Look under the porch and on the patio, examining the cushions if you have them there, as well. Keep an eye on the sidewalk or parking areas of public places. You might find coins at the mall or in any kind of community area or store. Of course, if you see the owner drop a coin, be sure to hand it over. Don’t allow yourself to spend the money you find. Instead, place it in your container for this purpose and save it as long as possible. One man saved more than $2,000 over a twenty-year period.

This Sony network Walkman has a storage capability of no less then 20GB and its battery power is sufficient for more then 40 hours of continuous music. It’s small, certainly compared to its storage capacity. The walkman has a slim aluminum case that fits nicely into your hands. It really looks like a cool state of the art piece of technology

The operation of the Sony NW-HD5 is very intuitive. Still this walkman comes with a lot op options. The hard-disk of the walkman is equipped with the so-called “G-Sensor” technology that protects it to sudden shocks and movements. The clear 1.5 inch dot matrix LCD screen is nicely illuminated at will. So you see there are plenty of plusses with this device.

But on the minus side there are some, in our opinion unforgivable, omissions. The equalizer and performance improving capabilities will only work if you play Sony’s own ATRAC3 files. You can only add music to the player by using the program SonicStage that converts WMA files automatically to the Sony ATRAC3 standard. Using the Windows Explorer to manage your files is almost impossible. And to top it all off, if you want to be able to use the NW-HD5 with multiple computers you will have to register with Sony’s own music service. Otherwise that is off limits. Finally, the NW-HD5 has no remote control.

Let’s face it the Sony NW-HD5 is a nice piece of technology, but by adding so many limitations and conditions on its usage this device loses all of its attraction. Our advice is: “Let Sony know that we don’t like the limitations they impose on us by buying another player”.

It just doesn’t make sense that Sony is trying to force consumers into using their standards and placing a multitude of limitations on them if they don’t want to comply.

Retired consultant sick of theory and rhetoric, says,
“Innovation isn’t about doing something nobody’s done before,
it’s about doing something better than anybody has done it
before.”

Las Vegas, Nevada August 20, 2005 – Everybody has a new idea, a
new theory, a new gimmick to sell to people with problems. David
Jackson, management consultant and founder and president of Use
Your Head Publications, Inc., thinks it’s high time that people
stop wasting money buying what’s new simply because it is new,
and focusing on possible solutions that are logically conceived,
have been tested in real world conditions, and had demonstrable
success.

“I’m sick to death of watching people and companies get duped by
peddlers of the latest gimmick on the block,” says Jackson. “I’m
a firm believer in ‘caveat emptor’ [‘Let the buyer
beware’] but there are so many advances in so many fields coming
at us all so fast that at times it’s hard for even veterans like
myself to tell the elixir from the snake oil. My company is
going to publish only authors and advisors who can verify
results. Whatever it is, if it’s offered on one of our websites,
it’s worked consistently.

“We guarantee satisfaction, but I’m not going to build a
business that amounts to nothing more than a vehicle for
short-term cash float while a million people chunk in $39.95
each only to have 99% of them ask for a refund 90 days later. We
want customers to be able to use us as a filter, and know from
having used any of our authors’ and advisors’ products that they
can expect the same success with anyone else we publish.”

Jackson is excited about the company’s latest project,
MakingHerHappy.com (http://www.makingherhappy.c
om), which promotes an e-book by David Cunningham, another
consultant and long-time associate of Jackson’s, for couples in
a long-term committed relationship that has gone stale, leaving
the partners bored, disengaged, and possibly leaning toward
infidelity or divorce.

“David’s a perfect example of what we’re looking for: sensible
advice, developed with and for real-world couples, and tested on
real-world couples before going public. There are tens of
thousands of sources for relationship advice, marriage advice,
and all kinds of counseling, but much of it is produced by
academic theoreticians and doesn’t hold water in the long term,
which is what makes for trends and fads, not time-honored advice
that comes to be called “wisdom of the ages,” which is what
we’re really after here.”

In his e-book, “How to Be Attractive to the Woman You Love,”
Cunningham says that two people must be well-matched, learn how
to communicate intimately and effectively, and then learn how to
be exciting to each other, which he said is often much harder
for men than for women to learn, so he’s targeted men with his
first book, teaching them what is naturally attractive to women
and how to employ that in a committed relationship, which is
often very different from how one would employ such tactics in a
first meeting or dating situation.

“As an example, ’Boring’ is the kiss of death for a man in a
woman’s eyes, so unpredictability is wildly attractive to women.
But, if a man gets too unpredictable with a woman with whom he
shares a couple of kids, a mortgage, etc., especially with
regard to responsibilities, it’s not attractive; it’s
frightening for her. My book teaches men how to be exciting
without being scary, among other things.”

Cunningham also produces a free daily tips and advice
newsletter, to which readers can subscribe at http://www.makingherhappy.co
m. He can be reached by e-mail at info@makingherhappy.com

Getting ringtones for your cell phone has become one of the hottest ways to set yourself apart on today’s scene. If you want to stand out in a crowd, the ringtone you choose can be a big step in the right direction.

So you want a great ringtone, but have no idea what makes one great? Follow the advice below and learn where the bar has been raised by the top 10 list below, dubbed the first class of the ringtone Hall of Fame.

Separating great ringtones from the rest of the bunch requires a series of judging criteria. First and foremost, a great ringtone must come from a great song. While it is possible for great songs to yield disappointing ringtones, the opposite is impossible. The ringtone must also be easily recognizable to many people. Everyone wants that ringtone that makes people smile and say, “I love that song” when your phone rings.

From a musical standpoint, the ringtone must be created from one of three song portions: the intro, the hook, or the solo. The success of these three parts to the musical equation are make or break for hit songs, making them essential to the success of a ringtone. Because of the technology format, songs that make great ringtones also need to have simple layers. Songs with dueling drums or guitars cause a ringtone to sound cluttered, making it difficult to identify by ear. The intros to songs like “Stairway to Heaven” and “A Thousand Miles” make great ringtones because they are catchy and easy on the ear.

In addition to coming from a particular section of a song, great ringtones must also feature a strong, repetitious percussion line. Whether that persistent pulse comes from the bass line of “Drop It Like It’s Hot” or from the synthesizers in “Take On Me,” the ability for many people to recognize a specific song comes from that repetition.

While the final keystones are being cemented into the ringtone shrine, here are the first ten inductees into the Ringtone Hall of Fame:

1. “In Da Club” – 50 Cent

Besides being Billboard’s inaugural “Ringtone of the Year” in 2004, 50’s first #1 hit has a bass line built for making heads bob. The strings section adds suspense to the song and puts high notes on top of the gutter base line. Having “In Da Club” as a ringtone means the party is never farther away than your phone.

2. “Stairway to Heaven” – Led Zeppelin

The calming woodwind that accompanies Page’s slow guitar picking makes for rock – and ringtone – heaven on earth. Several portions of this song have been made into ringtones, but the tone depicting the song’s introduction is truly a classic.

3. “Sweet Home Alabama” – Lynyrd Skynyrd

Music fans of all ages get a smile on their face at the first sound of this southern-rock classic. Change a party’s atmosphere from get together to jamboree by a simple “ring-ring.” The MP3 version is a required tone for country and classic rock fans.

4. “Super Mario Brothers” Game Theme

The essential ringtone for gamers. The polyphonic tone is an exact replication of the track from 16-bit Nintendo.

5. “Halloween” Movie Theme

Perfect custom tone for friends named Michael Myers. One of the most popular ringtones of all time that can outsell pop hits year round.

6. “The Next Episode” - Dr. Dre

While many hip-hop ringtones sound poor due to the overuse of dull bass lines, “The Next Episode” features thumping bass and a pulsating G-funk guitar lick, creating the bench mark for multi layered ringtones.

7. “Mission Impossible” Theme Song

Another incredibly popular ringtone despite its age that will only get more popular as the third installment of the movie franchise begins filming. Perfect as a custom tone for those over-demanding bosses in the workplace.

8. “Sandstorm” – DaRude

Like “Super Mario Brothers,” a distinct song replica is created by the polyphonic ringtone. A must for fans of techno music and another, sure fire, party-starter tone.

9. “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” Theme Song

The only hip-hop song your father can rap over is one of the most recognizable ringtones available. The beat is so contagious that setting it as your default ringer in a public place will cause a room to begin rhyming along as if they were Will Smith.

10. “The Jetsons” Theme Song

While the Jetsons had a lot of great things in their future world, one thing they don’t have is their own song as a phone ringer. We don’t have flying automobiles yet, but show off the evolution of cell phone technology with the upbeat polyphonic ditty.
