The Traditions:

Over time many wedding traditions and customs have evolved and
endured. Everything from the veil, rice, flowers and old shoes
to the walk-down-the-isle, at one time bore a very specific and
vitally significant meaning. Today, as the modern bride and
groom prepare for the big day the most enduring traditions to
consider are those that are based in wishing the wedding couple
the blessings of health, happiness and prosperity in their new
life together. As the couple convey their feelings for one
another in the presence of close family and friends, whatever
the tradition, all share the essential symbols of unity and love.

The Wedding Day:

The colors have been chosen, the shoes and gown have been
fitted, the music is ready and the photographer is booked. Is it
any wonder that the bride and groom are longing for the
honeymoon when they finally arrive at the big day.
Traditionally, on the day everyone will want to look and feel
their very best. Remember those wonderful wedding photo’s are
forever. According to tradition, it is considered bad luck for
the bride to be seen by the groom before the ceremony. In the
ancient marriage tradition the couple rarely saw each other at
all. As a matter of fact, the courtship or engagement period is
really a modern day custom.

The Honeymoon:

In ancient times, many of the first marriages were by capture,
not be choice. When early man felt it was time to take a bride,
he would often carry off an unwilling female to a secret place
where her relatives wouldn’t find them. While the moon went
through all its phases (30 days) they hid from searchers and
drank a brew made from honey. Hence, we get the word, honeymoon.
So whether the honeymoon is in a beautiful exotic beach
destination or a more cosy location close to home, it is the
time to enjoy private time together. The memories from these
happy days, when you have each others complete attention, are
not to be underestimated.

Identified some three years ago by the New York Times as a sleeping beauty about to rouse herself, Bulgaria is now very much awake to her potential. With an economic climate attracting property investment from all corners of the world, a dynamic tourist industry set to soon rival that of Spain and a structural development programme on-track for full EU membership in 2007, the Bulgarian success story is evolving daily. Blend all of that with a rich and mysterious cultural heritage, a wealth and diversity of nature that simply takes the breath away and a rural tranquility hard to find anywhere else in Europe and you have a sense of what makes Bulgaria such an extremely attractive Balkan Beauty.

The past few months have seen a flood of media coverage with a focus upon the property bargains to be found in the towns and cities of Bulgaria, in rural and village homes, in the ski resorts and in beach-front apartments on the Black Sea. The collective message is that Bulgaria is the place to be and the place to buy …

And it’s all true. Bulgaria does offer genuine property opportunities. The tourist industry is bringing in some 4 million visitors a year. Property developers are following rapidly in their wake and real estate agents across Europe now boast Bulgaria as a key destination in their portfolios.

There are thousands of properties and houses for sale in Bulgaria today and, even if you think that you may have missed the property boat in other countries, you’ll find that there are still plenty of tickets available. Holiday properties, investment opportunities and rural and village homes top the property buyers’ list of priorities - but demand is high and prices are rising so if you are considering a property purchase in Bulgaria we recommend that you start your information gathering and decision making now.

In 2003 the Consortium of Anti-Spyware Technology vendors (COAST) was formed to “collaborate on projects to increase awareness of issues involving spyware.” Their goals included helping consumers understand what had been installed on their systems, enabling them to remove what they didn’t want and pressuring the advertising software industry to change their business practices.

However, things began to unravel when several founding members (Lavasoft, Computer Associates, Webroot and Aluria) pulled out of the consortium, reportedly because of the group’s inability to create a set of standards and code of ethics. Some of those departing members also indicated that COAST had begun to certify — for a fee — certain publishers that were known by many anti-spyware firms as purveyors of spyware. Yes, my friends, allegedly the fox was watching the henhouse!

So COAST basically disintegrated and many say that was a good thing! The good news is this: in early 2005 the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) convened a meeting with industry anti-spyware leaders to discuss issues facing the anti-spyware industry, and the Anti-Spyware Coalition (ASC) was then formed. The new group includes the original COAST founders as well as consumer groups, academia and just about every big name in computing, including all the top anti-virus players.

Spyware has previously been defined as a computer program that, surreptitiously, gathers information without the knowledge of the user and may port that data back to another entity or as software that asserts control over a computer without the user’s knowledge.

One of the first tasks that ASC did was to create a formal definition of spyware and other potentially unwanted technologies. Their description is this: Technologies deployed without appropriate user consent and/or implemented in ways that impair user control over the following: (1) material changes that affect their user experience, privacy or system security; (2) use of their system resources, including the programs that are installed on their computers; and/or (3) collection, use and distribution of their personal or other sensitive information.

Another task of ASC was to create a set of common industry guidelines for publishers who allege that their software has been improperly flagged as spyware. This is an important step because, well frankly, sometimes anti-spyware vendors make mistakes and it can be quite costly for a publisher to be flagged as a bad guy! The guidelines are just that — guidelines — ASC does not independently resolve the disputes but has framed recommended best practices for anti-spyware software publishers. Bravo!

ASC also has published a glossary of terms commonly used in discussions about spyware and a list of anti-spyware Safety Tips to provide basic guidelines for consumers to protect themselves and their computers. They recommend that users keep their security patches up to date, download programs only from websites they trust, read the fine print in license agreements, not be tricked into clicking anything on a popup window, beware of free software and use tools to detect and delete spyware.

In an effort to fight spyware, three U.S. Senators have introduced a bill that would attempt to combat this plague by making it a crime to offer this type of spying computer program. The bill (S.2145) is entitled “Software Principles Yielding Better Levels of Consumer Knowledge Act,” or the “SPY BLOCK Act.” Cute name!

If passed it will outlaw software that, without explicit user permission, installs itself or other programs, reconfigures settings (or redirects the user), captures personal information or keeps track of visited websites. And, this is the best part: the software must disclose in clear language each aspect of what the program will do to your computer and with your information and must obtain your consent to do so.

In addition, the software must be easily uninstallable through the “add and remove programs” feature (in Windows OS) or other standard methods. Spyware programs are so notoriously difficult to remove from infected systems they are often referred to as parasitic. It appears the proposed legislation is lingering in committee. So, we’ll have to wait to see what happens to publishers of “unwanted technology” if SPY BLOCK ever becomes law.

According to a recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, nine out of ten Internet users say they have adjusted their online behavior out of fear of falling victim to software intrusions and about 59 million American adults, say they have had spyware or adware on their home computer. Additionally the project reports that 68% of home Internet users or about 93 million American adults have experienced at least one computer problem in the past year that was consistent with problems caused by spyware or viruses.

While those stats are discouraging, the report also indicated that 25% of Internet users say they have stopped downloading music or video files from peer-to-peer networks to avoid getting unwanted software programs on their computers. Perhaps there is some silver lining to the epidemic!

The report also indicated that there is a significant gap between people’s perceptions and the reality of what is on their computers. An October 2004 study by AOL and the National Cyber Security Alliance reported that 53% of respondents said they had spyware or adware on their computers, but a scan revealed that 80% of them actually had such programs installed. Yikes!

That same study found an average of 93 spyware applications on users’ computers. The thought of nearly a hundred spyware applications per computer just blows my mind. Experts conservatively estimate that for every 1,000 users in an organization, the costs of fixing spyware-related problems are $83,000 per year. Forrester Research released “AntiSpyware Adoption In 2005,” which indicated that 39% of respondents, dubbed “technology decision makers,” did not know the percentage of desktops infected with spyware in their organizations and 56% were unsure of what percentage of help desk calls were related to spyware issues. However, the Forrester report indicates that, on average, 7% of all help desk calls are made in response to spyware infections. Considering how much time it usually takes to resolve a serious spyware infection, that number is huge.

I have been infected a couple of times on my home computer — ahem — when someone other than me was using it. It takes days to “fix” the problem. In fact, I now just re-image my PC because it is easier than trying to find the culprit(s) and eliminate them. I simply keep a backup of my data on an ongoing basis so that I don’t have to deal with the potential loss of it.

Meanwhile, the need to fight spyware will push anti-spyware revenues from $12 million in 2003 to an estimated $305 million in 2005. Hum … with all that revenue to be had, how motivated could anti-spyware publishers be to find a cure?

Folks, this insidious problem is not going away any time soon. The best we can do is to alter our cyber-behavior and keep our anti-spyware and anti-virus software up to date. Remember, my little chickens, it may not be Big Brother watching you, but somebody probably is — let’s hope it isn’t a fox! Safe surfing.

Outsourcing means to take a company’s business and other processes to an outside firm. The outsourcing process is mainly handed over to an outside or overseas firm which specializes in providing the required services. There are different segments of business which can be outsourced. Some of the outsourced segments of business process are customer support system, call centre functions, human resources, research processes, engineering services, IT operations and accounting outsourcing besides many others. Accounting outsourcing is undertaken by many firms to provide efficient and cost effective services to its clients.

There are many aspects of accounting which is taken care of through accounting outsourcing. Some of these aspects are asset management, expense and revenue management and reporting, accounts receivable collection, management and consultancy services and also maintenance of accounts. The entire process of your accounting outsourcing will be taken care of. All you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the professional services provided by the specialists.

The outsourcing process is of great help to customers during the tax season when everybody wants to keep their records clean by paying the right amount of taxes just at the right time. During this time it is very important that everybody pays their taxes, but they also need to have a clear picture about how much they have to pay. This means that everybody makes a mad rush to his or her accountant for accounting his taxes. This is where the entire process of outsourcing accounting helps in giving fast and efficient services to clients.

Now the first question that arises is why accounting should be outsourced in the first place? Well if you take a look at the positives of accounting outsourcing you will be the first to put up your hand in favor of this. The first and foremost reason for this type of outsourcing is that customers will yield benefits from the services of people who have specialization in this particular field. The specialized professional will take special care of your needs and requirements and will give you the desired results

Another benefit which can be obtained by accounting outsourcing is that this will help in contributing to the economic growth of both the country to which the company belongs and also to the country where the work has been outsourced to. The parent company can benefit because it can save huge amounts on labor and other factors that are needed for carrying out the work in his country. The country where the work is outsourced also gets benefited as huge amounts of revenue are invested in the country.

Accounting outsourcing has become very common these days. There are companies which outsource their accounting process to a third party. This provides a welcome relief to big companies who have to deal with large number of clients for their account related works. The work can be outsourced to another company within the country or outside the country as well. A company can save huge amounts of time, money and resource by outsourcing the accounting work.

I do not know if I can write yet another story on America’s false perceptions of Mexico and the constant America media “spotlighting” of the criminal events that do occur here. I’ve written so many and then swear that I will not write another single story on this issue. But, you’ve got to hear this one.

The wife and I ran into an expatriate friend from Arkansas that had just learned his brothers, a doctor and lawyer, turned his name over to the American Embassy in Mexico City as missing and possibly kidnapped. Through a series of bizarre events, his brothers, both highly educated men, believed the American news media hype in reporting on the currently out-of-control crime situation in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. They jumped to the irrational conclusion that their brother, our friend, just had to be one of the Americans who had been reported missing or killed simply because he had not written them in a while.

So, rather than thinking through this problem and coming up with a rational way to test their assumptions, they assumed the worse and called the troops into action. They had even purchased airline tickers to come searching for him. They engaged in the “spotlight fallacy”[1] and believed the worst. Their brother is 50 years old and lives more than 12 hours away from Nuevo Laredo.

The way our friend told us of the event was funny and we got a belly laugh out of it. But, being who I am, it began to bother me to think how time after time, Americans will allow themselves to become so manipulated by the American press, which reinforces the already deeply-bred Xenophobia that is ingrained into the hearts and minds of Americans.

This vexes me to no end!

Why is America so willing to “…uncritically assume that all members or cases of a certain class or type are like those that receive the most attention or coverage in the media”?[2]

I am convinced this is why so many Americans are afraid of Mexico and her citizens. They are willing to swallow what someone else tells them without once engaging in critical thinking about what they hear or read in the American press. I do not know what to think. Is it that Americans cannot or will not think critically? I really do not know.

Let’s take a look at the crime that is occurring in the border town of Nuevo Laredo. The American press is reporting this in such a way as to give the American people the impression that there is random crime against Americans in the city of Nuevo Laredo. You would think, from how the American press is slanting things, that no American is safe in Mexico. Some Americans think that we expats have to dodge bullets each time we walk out our front doors. However, I really shouldn’t fault Americans for believing this since this is how the press is reporting it.

Or, on the other hand, perhaps I should fault Americans and here is why.

The “Spotlight Fallacy” is simply this: “This line of reasoning is fallacious since the mere fact that someone or something attracts the most attention or coverage in the media does not mean that it automatically represents the whole population. For example, suppose a mass murderer from Old Town, Maine received a great deal of attention in the media. It would hardly follow that everyone from the town is a mass murderer. The Spotlight fallacy derives its name from the fact that receiving a great deal of attention or coverage is often referred to as being in the spotlight.”[3]

The first thing I would pound (gently, of course) into the heads of Americans is that what the American media is “spotlighting” in Nuevo Laredo is not indicative of all of Mexico and her people. It is the criminal element—the drug lords—who are the ones engineering the crime spree in Nuevo Laredo. I would also make the point that just because the Mexican government does not seem to be dealing with the problem in the time frame and manner in which Washington deems appropriate, that President Fox’s government is “in on the drug dealing”. Many Americans who refuse to think critically believe this very thing!

The second thing I would pound into the heads of Americans is that drugs come through Mexico and not from Mexico. It is a mere conduit.

The third thing (maybe this should have been the first thing) I would pound into the heads of Americans is that the current levels of violence in Nuevo Laredo, between the rival drug kings, is so that they can win the turf war to supply Americans with cocaine and other illegal substances they snort up their noses, smoke into their lungs, or shoot into their veins.

DO NOT MISS THIS POINT.

If there weren’t a gigantic American market for the products the drug lords deal, would there be the violence in Nuevo Laredo right now? Would they be fighting for the highly lucrative American market for the poison they peddle if the market didn’t exist?

NO ONE EVER SEEMS TO MAKE THIS POINT.

The fourth thing I would pound into the heads of Americans is most of those Americans who have been killed or turn up missing are involved somehow, someway, in the drug trade (And yes there have been some innocents—a figure no one knows—who undoubtedly are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. This, however, is an assumption. There may be NO innocents and all the murders could be associated with the drug trade—a very dangerous business in which to involve oneself!).

“”In my experience, most of the missing and murder victims are involved in organized crime,” said Daniel Hernandez, Mexico’s consul general in Laredo. “Sometimes, it’s involuntary; it can be a cousin of a cousin and they’re at the wrong place at the wrong time.””[4]

Of course, there are those Americans who would dispute this Mexican consulate officer’s word simply because he is Mexican.

I have contact with a reporter at the Dallas Morning News. She told me, regarding a story she did on this same issue some months ago, that Americans need a great deal of perspective when evaluating these American media reports of crime in Mexico. From her investigative reporting, she believes most of the American victims are associated, in one way or another, with the drug trade.

Not all but most.

After pounding those four points into the heads of the American public, I would go after the American press for their turn.

I would pound into the heads of the American press that good journalism is not just “making up” arbitrary figures. You don’t get to do that and expect to get by with it! And that is apparently what they are doing.

I’ve read American media reports which report that anywhere from 30 to 42 Americans have ended up either kidnapped or murdered (or both) in Nuevo Laredo this year. Just where do those figures come from?

Regarding the kidnappings, they do not come from the State Department because, according to Narco News, the U.S. State Department is “unaware of any report that systematically tracks kidnappings of U.S. citizens in Mexico”.[5]

The original “travel warning” regarding American murders in Nuevo Laredo, issued by the State Department, began January 2005 and has been reissued two additional times. By June 30, 2005, here is what The State Department itself released in a report[6]:

Total number of American citizens murdered in Mexico—21.

Total number of American citizen murdered in Nuevo Laredo—3

Area with highest number of murdered American citizens—Baja with 7 and Tijuana with 4.

Do not miss this either: three, count them, three Americans were murdered in Nuevo Laredo so far this year according to the U.S. State Department’s own report. The highest number of American murders did not occur in Nuevo Laredo but below the California-Mexico border. Where is the American press getting its 30-42 American kidnapped or murdered in Nuevo Laredo from?

Of those American citizens who were murdered in Mexico, the reasons for their deaths are not known. It could have been for any reason.

So what we have is the American press apparently “making it up as they go along”. If the State Department’s own figures do not mesh with what the American Press is scaring the “you-know-what” out of the American people with, then where on earth are they getting the figures they are reporting—a crystal ball?

The whole time the American Press has been playing the “let’s-make-something-up” game, American citizens have not been the ones dying in Nuevo Laredo. It has been the Mexican nationals. And yet, from what I am being told by friends back in the States, the opposite is what is being reported almost nightly with the mainstream elite media.

Here is how this influences Mexico. This year, a mere 20 million Americans will visit Mexico to pour money into its economy through the tourist trade. This will be considerably lessoned by the insane reporting by the American press and the hysteria-motivated U.S. State Department’s travel warnings.

Based on false figures and inappropriate travel warnings, fewer Americans will visit Mexico. The dollars they would have spent could have been used to improve this country’s economy and to provide more jobs in the tourist industry, which in turn, would reduce the number of attempts by Mexican nationals to jump the border. Americans would rather whine and complain about the illegal Mexican migrant worker than contribute to a beginning solution to the problem of immigration.

More American tourism would mean more jobs for Mexicans and fewer attempts at illegal entry into America! Americans, already full of fear and trepidation from centuries-old culturally bred Mexican xenophobia, is having its xenophobia reinforced by a dishonest and inaccurate American press.

Did I mention that this vexes me to no end?

Methods that guarantee a computer or network is safe from computer viruses, worms and trojan horses simply do not exist. Users can take several precautions, however to protect their home and work computers from these malicious infections. The precautionary measures are:

1. Never start a computer with a floppy disk in drive A; unless it is an uninfected recovery disk.

2. Set the macro security in programs so you can enable and disable macros. Only enable macros if the document is from a trusted source and you are expecting it.

3. Install an antivirus program on all of your computers. Obtain updates to the antivirus signature files on a regular basis.

4. Check all downloaded programs for viruses, worms, or trojan horses. These malicious-logic programs often are placed in seemingly innocent programs, so they will affect a large number of users.

5. Never open an e-mail attachment unless you are expecting it and it is from a trusted source. Scan for viruses in all e-mail attachments you intend to open. Turn off message preview.

6.Write-protect your recovery disk by sliding the write-protect tab into the write-protect position.

7.If the antivirus program flags an e-mail attachment is infected, delete the attachment immediately.

8. Before using any floppy disk or zip disk, use the antivirus scan program to check the disk for infection. Incorporate this procedure even for shrink-wrapped software from major developers. Some commercial software has been infected and distributed to unsuspecting users this way.

9. Back up your files regularly. Scan the backup program befor ebacking up disks and files to ensure the backup program is virus free.

Sometimes I wonder just what the world’s coming to…

For some among y’all out there who read this column each week, you might’ve noticed a little while back that it didn’t run for a week or so. As a result, I’ve had some people write and/or call and ask me just what was going on? Some thought I had decided to stop writing the column, some speculated that I had signed some kind of deal with “a big city newspaper” which meant that I couldn’t write for my current ones anymore, and one person asked if I’d just “had enough?” For the record, the answer to each of those questions is a definitive “no.”

I have a great time writing this column each week. It allows me to write about almost anything that pops into my mind, and I love having that kind of freedom. As a result, I seldom have a clue each week as to what I’m going to write about until I sit down in my chair and get to work. So, with that having been said, let me get right into the reason that “Free Wheelin’” went missing for a week or so. It vanished for a while due to the fact that some sweetheart out there in internet land sent me a virus.

That’s right, a computer virus. One of those malicious little programs that’s designed to wreak havoc on your computer. Viruses cost businesses and individuals tons of money each year, and for what? It makes no sense at all unless I give some thought as to just what type person sends out these viruses. It must be some super sloppy, maladjusted eighteen year old haint times three computer whiz whose closest contact with a woman comes through the serving line at his school’s cafeteria, or some super-nerdy, pocket protector wearing geek who’s mad at world because he doesn’t yet possess a working personality. And, because these people would rather be anti-social than take a good, long look in the mirror we all have to pay for it. No one ever said that life would be fair, huh?

Fortunately, I’m pleased to report that I got out of my situation without too much damage. I did have to pay someone to reformat my hard drive, but I kept back-up copies of most of my stuff so I really didn’t get hurt too badly. I also went out and bought some better anti-virus software, which hopefully will screen most of these cyber pests in the future. In the end, though, almost anyone can get nailed with a computer virus, and I’ve been far luckier than most - the people that fixed my computer told me that a lady brought in one a week earlier that had over two thousand viruses on it! It’s a wonder that the “On” switch on her computer even worked with all that mischief lurking around on her hard drive.

In the end, I guess there are just some people out there who are sort of like walking cases of jock itch, they contribute nothing to the world and try and tear down those of us that do. People like the woman who walked up to my son recently at his job as a cashier at a well-known supermarket chain and presented him with over six hundred dollars worth of live lobsters and steaks. And what did she attempt to pay for all that food with? Food stamps. I kid you not, food stamps. Fortunately, the two food stamp cards she presented for payment had both expired, but, even with that happening, she proceeded to put down a dollar and some change in the hope that Will would be stupid enough to accept that for full payment. He politely told the lady that she was about six hundred some odd dollars short, to which she replied, “Well, I’ll go someplace else and check my luck there.”

So, for all you deadbeats, virus spreaders, bad check writers, child support non-payers, and the like, if I had my way I’d put you all in jail cells with Perry Como music playing in the background twenty four hours a day, serve you Spam sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and then assign guards to sit outside your cells who’ve just eaten large Mexican dinners. And that’s just for starters - don‘t even ask me what y’alls daily recreational program would consist of. The way I see it, every dog has his day, and it’s more than time for some of you bottom feeders out there to stop having yours…
