There are conferences being held at iHollywood forums about coming up with full-motion videos for your cell phone. This service will be provided for the new Nokia 3650 wireless phone. At first one might think this is a cool new idea and concept, but it is not.
The idea has been around since the early 80’s and it never took off then and most likely won’t now and there are good reasons it won’t, some of which are and not limited to:

1) The screen resolution is way too small to properly enjoy and view the full-motion pictures designed for large screen plasma TV’s.

2) It can be almost guaranteed that if this movie was attempted to be played on another phone, the battery would give up half way, if not earlier. Regardless, even on the Nokia, the batteries can only last up to an hour longer after the entire movie is done playing (provided the movie is approximately 1.5 hours in length)

3) Lastly, the quality of the movie would not be so great, as referenced in point one, not only that but the movies will be in the RealOne format, which in geek terms means, long buffering time and very poor video quality.

4) The price of this is targeted at $20 per movie, because of “the ease and mobility” carriers’ provide for the content. This as we know, is more expensive then watching the movie in the theatres and almost the same as buying a DVD that you can keep forever or renting up to 4 blockbuster movies.

5) If there is a call or incoming message, it will most cover and block the screen that the movie will be playing on temporarily.

These reasons are sufficient enough to not want to go and subscribe to a mobile content provider that are over-charging for a service that is not new or very user-friendly.

You have been dating for a few weeks and everything is
going great. You have a lot of things in common and you can’t
wait to show her off to all your friends. But wait…before you
invite her to poker night, take a minute and think about it.
Your buddies are great, but what kind of message are they
sending to your respective partner? Take out a pen and paper and
start jotting down the names of all your friends. Then go
through the following list to find out who to invite and who to
give a rain check for another day.

The College Buddy- He has been there for you since freshman
year. He was with you at every frat party and every early
morning class. He remembers every girlfriend and every fling you
ever had. Beware of introducing him to your girlfriend however,
the last thing that either of you wants is to be reminded of
your assorted list of girlfriends and one night stands. Save the
meeting for another day.

Your Roommate- The two of you share a bathroom and a fridge
together, and probably a lot more. He understands your quirks.
He will probably be the first to admit that your feet smell and
you can’t cook anything but pizza and cereal. This buddy should
be invited to your initial “meet the friends” party however. He
will no doubt be around when you bring her home, so it is a good
idea to get this meeting out of the way early on. You can pick
the date and gain a little control over the situation. Nobody
likes to meet someone for the first time when they are in the
shower or some other equally embarrassing situation.

Your Married Friends- You had to sit through their four hour
wedding, so now its payback time. They all have houses, wives,
and maybe even a few kids. You normally see them at backyard
cookouts and other get-togethers. They are probably a little
more stable than your single friends and understand women a
little better (at least we hope). For this reason, I would
highly recommend inviting them to meet your new girl. It will
help her see that you are capable of settling down. If they have
some pictures of you playing water tag with the kids at the last
party, you get bonus points.

With a little bit of planning you can make the meeting great for
everybody involved. Pick a nice public place which will make
everyone feel more comfortable. Good luck and relax, you will do
great and your friends will love her!

Developing your will-power is directly related to your success
in life. No one can over-estimate the power of your will to do.

Most people do not fail because of a lack of education. History
is filled with uneducated or poorly educated millionaires who
didn’t let this supposed shortcoming hold them back. On the
contrary, what they may have lacked in education was obliterated
by their overpowering will to succeed no matter how many times
they failed along the way.

It is the lack of determination and concentrated will-power that
is the true reason most people fail. Just as an athlete trains
for a physical game that takes concentrated effort to
accomplish, the mind must also be trained with the proper skills
to win in life.

The process of obtaining this self-mastery - the complete
command of your mind’s powers - is a gradual one. It involves
determination and the daily task of making it a habit. Once you
have self-mastery, the cost of obtaining it will bring a real
sense of accomplishment and a realization how minimal the cost
really was in the long run.

You don’t need to be a genius to succeed - just make yourself do
the thing you have to do when it has to be done, whether you
like it or not. It’s one of the best lessons you can learn!

In “The Power of Concentration” Theron Q. Dumont makes a
powerful statement when he says, “Do not expect that you will
always have easy sailing. Parts of your journey are likely to be
rough. Don’t let the rough places put you out of commission.
Keep on with the journey. Just the way you weather the storm
shows what material you are made of. Do not let a setback stop
you. Think of it as a mere incident that has to be overcome
before you can reach your goal.”

When Henry Ward Beecher was asked how he could accomplish so
much more than others, he replied, “I don’t do more, but less
than other people. They do all their work three times. Once in
anticipation, once in actuality, and once in rumination. I do
mine in actuality alone, so I end up doing things just once.”

Beecher could concentrate his mind on what he was doing at a
given moment. Then he’d go to something else and concentrate on
it. One of the secrets of a successful life is to be able to
focus all our energies on one thing at a time.

Don’t waste your time worrying as it only crowds your thoughts
with worthless clutter. Focus on what you’re doing while you’re
doing it, and stop worry before it stops you. Worry is an energy
zapper. It reduces your chances of success and it can make life
just as miserable for those around you.

Learning to focus your efforts is the only way you will achieve
the success you’re capable of. The earlier in life you learn
this simple fact, the more likely you will overcome everything
that slows you down and prevents you from true success in
everything you do.

Here’s a recipe for a wasted life - just go about every day
trying to do too many things at once. Splitting yourself up into
a hundred parts leads to nowhere.

The old saying in real estate is: Location, Location, Location.

In life, it very well could be: Focus, Focus, Focus.

Some people like to juggle a number of tasks. Some people are
even good at it. But most of us need to concentrate our efforts
on one task at a time in order to reach our goals. It’s not the
amount of work you do in an hour or a day or even a year, but
it’s your persistence in constantly moving forward that will get
you where you want to go.

Keep at it! And remember …

Focus, Focus, Focus.

You can get a pretty good idea of the benefits of clutter clearing simply by imagining your life free of all the negative effects of clutter: lack of focus and clarity; feelings of being professionally, creatively, spiritually, and/or romantically stuck; insufficient time and attention for self and family; increased stress, irritability and depression. Wouldn’t it be great to be free of all these?

No matter what other factors may be dragging you down, I guarantee you that clearing your clutter will dramatically improve your mood and energy. And then any other problems you are confronting won’t seem quite so bad.

When you first start clutter clearing you may be surprised at the emotions triggered by the simple act of dealing with your stuff. You think you’re just cleaning out your home, but what you’re really doing is rooting around in dusty corners of your psyche and coming eyeball-to-eyeball with unresolved business from the past. The personal relics that lurk within your clutter - college papers, family memorabilia, detritus from a long-dead marriage - can be easier to ignore than to carry to the dump, which is why they’ve been haunting the back of your closet for so many years.

As you persevere with clutter clearing a moment will come when you realize how much lighter and happier you feel. In the process of coping with your clutter, you’ve reconnected with your inner self, with dreams and wishes long ignored. Those you’ve outgrown can be released with a fond smile. Those that make your heart leap with recognition and longing… well, now you have the space, time, and energy to pursue them.

Clutter clearing gets you out of your rut. It shakes loose frozen aspects of your soul and allows them to journey into your heart where they belong and where you can listen to and act upon them.

Eventually, you will find yourself turning to clutter clearing instead of aspirin or caffeine when you notice that you’re not as clear-headed, focused or insightful as you’d like to be. If you’re feeling lethargic and don’t want to exercise, you’ll know to examine whether you’ve allowed a zone of stagnation to creep in around the couch (where you are most likely to be having lazy thoughts in the first place). If you can’t seem to decide on priorities for your business, you’ll realize it’s time to clear off the desk and catch up on paperwork. And if you’re not eating as well as you should, you’ll remember that clearing off the kitchen counter and cleaning out the fridge will help get your eating habits back on track.

What this all boils down to is that managing your clutter helps you feel like less of a victim and puts you back in control of your moods and your life. You have greater confidence in your abilities and decisions, so you feel more hopeful and optimistic about the future. You respect yourself more, and will probably find that other people treat you better as well. You feel less stressed, and have more courage to try and do new things. You stop turning to material objects to make you happy, because you are content with less.

Clearing out your clutter creates space for possibility. You may find yourself deciding to go back to school, change your career, start your own business, go out on a date, take up painting or singing or ballroom dancing, try out for a part in a play, or… what’s your dream? (No wonder clutter clearing can be a little scary! Suddenly there are no more excuses for why you can’t pursue that dream.)

Your friends will say you look terrific. They’ll wonder where that sparkle in your eye came from, and how you manage to look both energized and serene at the same time. It’s because you have released from your life everything that is no longer useful to you. You have let go of the past and are no longer hoarding for the future. You have made space for living freely in the present, where peace resides.

What is in store for the communications industry and cell phone technology? What can you expect to become available with your cellular phone? Is regular telephone service an obsolete technology?

The communications industry has been thriving for more than half a century. With so many technological advancements and innovations, where is it all headed?

While many mom and pop businesses are either staying with traditional land line based telephone and long distance service, a good number of them along with an increasing number of mid sized companies are moving on to high speed voice over Internet protocol or VoIP phone services. This allows them to use their Internet connection as their telephone connection helping them to cut costs and raise their bottom line.

Cell phones are making huge strides in their capabilities as well. Not only can you talk and send text messages with your cell phone, but you can check your email, stock quotes and a variety of other services along with surfing the Internet. Recently the cell phone companies have upgraded their services to include high speed cellular connections. So, now you can do even more with your wireless phone.

With so many office based companies using a combination of VoIP and standard phone services, the vast majority of contractor related companies have been using cell phones to conduct their business for years. Now, not only can the contractors stay in touch with their home office, they can update service call statuses in real time, check their scheduled house calls with more freedom, and respond more quickly to customer’s needs.

In the future you will probably see nearly all brick and mortar businesses using Internet based telephone services and wireless phones becoming more and more like computers. We can already see cell phones with full keyboards like the Blackberry™ and others.

You will likely see cell phones with outlets that plug into your car’s computer to help you find directions. You could soon be making hotel and flight reservations over the Internet while driving to work in the morning simply by talking to your cell phone which would be plugged into your cars computer planning out your route to the airport and looking up what sights and events you want to visit on your trip; all this just by speaking commands that your phone would understand and perform.

The future of communications is exciting to say the least. Innovation and imagination is the key to this intense growth of technology.

Without question, computers were more trouble than they were worth for a good many years. Room-sized computers couldn’t even keep up with a cheap pocket calculator for the first 15 years of their existence! And the prices…is it any wonder that most of us thought the computer was just some fancy toy? If you really think about it, Pong lured more of us into the world of computers than anything practical. Ahh, but everything has changed, hasn’t it? And done so before our very eyes.

From the cashier ringing up our lunch to the meter reader making the rounds in the neighborhood every month for the gas company, computers have invaded everywhere! Computer training was once perceived as a way to open up some pretty impressive doors. Now? Some degree of computer training is needed just to get in any door these days, and it’s only going to get worse.

Hey look, I’m a welder - why would I ever need computer training?

I’ve got just one word for you - China. You know, that crazy place where wages are a mere fraction of what they are in the United States or Western Europe. One out of every six manufacturing jobs has been lost in the United States since 2000. Global competition has changed computer training from “nice resume builder” to “essential reading”. But while China has millions and millions of people who can afford to work for a fraction of what workers bring home in the West, the country is still very behind with respect to technology and basic computer training. It is more than possible that some in-depth computer training may be what makes you vital to a company, and a person who can only weld - well, easier to replace.

I don’t sleep enough as it is - where am I going to find time for computer training?

Well, you can always find time for computer training after you get laid-off and don’t have to worry about that irritating job thing for awhile - after all, it does eat up 40 hours a week (or more). However, if you want to stay ahead of the game and not play catch-up, online computer training schools may be your best option.

Are you nuts? Those online places are a joke, right? I mean, what employer is going to give me a job because of some certificate from a school that doesn’t exist - except on my computer?

Are there some shady online computer training schools? Well, of course there are - but the same is true of those “real” schools with cool things like buildings and stuff. They operate without accreditation, making their certificates and degrees useless. However, just as with online computer training schools, there are a lot of great places to get the additional training and skills you need to succeed in this brave new world of ours. As with traditional computer training schools, you will have to do your homework in order to get the best training for your buck. Plus—and this is key—you are only going to benefit by actually trying to learn. Many employers test computer skills prior to employment anyway, so cheating the system or attending online computer training schools with poor requirements will only hurt you in the long run.

Like it or not, the computer is not going anywhere. For better or worse, we must live in this new electronic universe, and computer training is vital to your success. In order to stay a step ahead of the competition while leading a hectic lifestyle, consider online computer training schools as an option for getting the skills you need in this global market. Ignore this fact, and you may be saying “Would You Like Fries With That?”

Tip #1. Do a Google search. Don’t be to general in your search, type
in exactly what your looking for. Try putting the words you
type in quotes to narrow the search.

Tip #2. Go shopping at the office supplies and discount clubs. You
may find some discount clubs like Costco & Sams have a 6
month return policy, check your location. California stores
have a 6 month no questions asked policy, and yes, this means
Computers and Software too, even if the package is open and
you have used it. Just make sure you can put it back in the box
and you have the receipt.

Tip #3. Don’t forget to check eBay.

Tip #4. Try other stores like Fry’s, Best Buy, Circuit City, Dell, Gateway,
CompUSA.

Tip #5. If your looking for used try craigslist.org, eBay.com,
http://auctions.yahoo.com

Tip #6. Compare prices at pricescan.com, pricewatch.com,
pricegrabber.com, price.com, epinions.com, shopper.cnet.com,
streetprices.com & bizrate.com

Tip #7. Check the Sunday newspaper.

Tip #8. Staples, Office Max and Office Depot have price matching. So
If one of them has a sales you can take the sale ad to any one
of them and they will honor it. Helpful if the store having the
sale is not to close to you.

Hope this helps, good luck and thanks for reading.

Since the DOS days, batch files have been one of the most convenient and immediate ways to accomplish certain tasks. Even today it’s possible to find some remarkably sophisticated utilities written as command-line batch files.

On the downside, batch files are easily hacked, edited, and reverse-engineered, making them problematic to rely on in certain situations.

I’ve written before about some ways around this, such as using elevated or deprecated privileges, but one of the more interesting tools I’ve seen for working with batch files is a program called Quick Batch File Compiler (QBFC).

QBFC takes any command-line batch program and compiles it into an encrypted executable or .EXE file. An .EXE file is much harder to casually reverse-engineer, so this could be a way to conceal a particular batch file’s operations from an end user. For instance, if you had a network environment where a batch script was run at logon, and you wanted key information in the script hidden, the script could be converted to an .EXE and protected from prying eyes a lot more easily than a conventional batch file. (.EXE files also run faster than batch files, of course.)

QBFC can create two types of applications: a standard console application, which accepts conventional command-line parameters, or a “ghost” application, which opens no windows and provides no feedback. The latter is best for security or for when you want to perform an install or modification silently. QBFC also lets you set various resources in the .EXE file, such as its description, the company name, version information and even the application icon.

QBFC’s shareware version is unrestricted, except that all .EXEs produced by the program flash a brief note at startup. The registered version does not have this limitation.

This article is intended for engineering or architectural companies that are planning to find a vendor to whom they can outsource their CAD drafting requirements.

No matter how experienced the vendor may be, they will have to take time ascending a learning curve. This can take up to 100 hours of drafting if there are many unique style criteria.

Some of the style criteria are automatically absorbed if the vendor is given a drawing template, which is basically an existing drawing of the outsourcer with the image erased. What remains in the drawing will be the layer list, the dimension styles and the sheet template.

Style criteria that cannot usually be automated are:

  • The points in drawings where these should be placed:
    • Dimensions (e.g., inner dimensions or outer?)
    • Leaders (e.g., at boundaries of areas or within them?)
    • Leader text (e.g., at the edges of the viewport, near the image or either?)

  • Layer assignment for the various elements of the drawing (unless the elements and their layers are preprogrammed into the drawing platform, as in Architectural Desktop ®)

  • Positioning criteria such as:

    • The vertical distance from image to title and from title to subtitle
    • The vertical distance between stacked images in the same drawing

The assignment of elements in the drawing to appropriate layers usually involves the most learning on the part of draftsmen. This is because frequently this assignment requires specific domain knowledge.

By way of explanation, if the drawing were an HVAC layout with separate layers for fresh water pipes, hot water pipes and cold water pipes, the draftsman would have to understand the overall working of the particular system to know the layer associated with each section of pipe.

This is alright if the draftsman has hundreds of hours of exposure to HVAC, but such individuals are rare in the CAD drafting services landscape. The outsourcer would have to contract with a more expensive, specialized CAD drafting service.

In effect, the outsourcer must pay for the learning curve either with time or with money. But as described above, it is a necessary and inescapable phenomenon!

The Magnum Group (TMG) is one of India’s leading CAD drafting service providers with engineers and architects on the full-time staff. TMG has specialized domain knowledge in architecture, HVAC engineering, electrical engineering and wooden furniture design.

A slightly longer series of articles “Keeping Your Secrets Secret” will examine practical examples in greater detail and provides useful tips and advice. Of course, these will continue with the theme of making crypto and computer security easily understood.

One-Way Hash

Also known as a one-way function, a message digest, a fingerprint or a checksum, the algorithm creates a fixed-length output that cannot be reversed. One-way hashes provide checksums to validate files, create digital certificates and played a central part in many authentication schemes.

Let us consider this example. For ages, the Chinese have a fortune-telling method that relies on “Ba Ji” (eight characters) which uses the time, day, month and year of birth according to their calendar. There are sixty possibilities (almost equal to 6 bits) for each of the four variables. Since the Chinese use two characters for each variable, the result is always eight characters. This is an example of a nonsecure 24-bit one-way hash.

Obviously, this way of producing a one-way hash is not acceptable for security purposes because of the huge number of collisions (different inputs producing the same output).

The most commonly used hashes are SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm uses 160 bits) and MD5 (Message Digest uses 128 bits). In August 2005, a team of cryptographers led by Xiaoyun Wang of Shandong University, China, presented a paper that found faster ways of finding collisions than the usual brute force method. These exploits (vulnerabilities) may make digital certificates forgery a reality.

The implications to e-commerce may be widespread not to mention the millions of websites which used MD5 to hash the users’ passwords in their databases. Any webmaster can tell you that converting these sites to use SHA-256 or SHA-512 will not be a trivial task.

In a recent directive, NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, U.S.A.) has advised U.S. governmental agencies to use SHA-256 or SHA-512 (256 and 512 bits respectively) instead.

Biometrics

A biometric device is one that can identify unique characteristics from a finger, eye or voice. Many believe that biometrics should provide a higher level of security than other forms of authentication.

There is a news story in March 2005 of how a Malaysian owner lost his Mercedes car and index finger to car thieves armed with machetes. Obviously the keyless ignition electronics cannot detect whether the finger is still part of the original body nor whether the finger (and by extension the person) is alive or not.

Recent security breaches have heightened concern over depositories of personal information stored on many financial sites. When such breaches occurred, the incidence of identity thefts will thus rise also.

If you lose your credit card, you can always void the card and get a new one. When you lose your fingerprint (stored digitally), or other biometric features, who can replace those?

Passwords

When asked to conjure a random number or characters, most people inevitably used materials that are familiar to them like birthdays, names of family members, pets’ names and so forth.

For example, most will choose dates when asked to choose a six-digit number for their ATM Personal Identification Number (PIN). Doing so will reduce the number of possibilities by nine times.

Random Numbers and Generators

Random numbers are central to crypto. To qualify as true random numbers, the output from random number generators (RNG) must pass statistical tests of randomness. Two suites considered as de facto standards are the “diehard” suite developed by Prof. George Marsaglia of State University of Florida and “Statistical Test Suite” from NIST.

Second, the RNG’s output must be unpredictable even with complete knowledge of the algorithm or hardware producing the series and all the previous bits produced.

Third, the RNG’s output cannot be cloned in a repeat run even with the same input.

The most common approach to producing random numbers is by using an algorithm carried out by a computer program (Yarrow, Tiny, Egads, Mersenne Twister). Such algorithms cannot produce random numbers, hence their names, pseudo-random number generators (PRNG).

Another approach is to use physical events such as entropy produced by the keyboard, mouse, interrupts, white noise from microphones or speakers and disk drive behavior as the seed (initial value).

Some may argue that true random generators are those that can detect quantum behavior in subatomic physics. This is because randomness is inherent in the behavior of subatomic particles - remember the electron cloud from your high school physics.

One-time Pad

The most effective system is often the simplest. A one-time pad (OTP) is a series of random bits that has the same length as the digital object to be encrypted. To encrypt, just use a simple computer operation, exclusive OR (XOR). To decrypt, simply XOR the encrypted result with the same random bits.

The downside of using OTP is that once used, it must be discarded. Second, the OTP and the digital object must have the same number of bits. Lastly, the obvious problem of synchronizing the OTP between the receiver and sender.

[Author’s note: The concluding Part 3 will focus on keys management and public key cryptography.]

“In God we trust, others use crypto.”
