No matter what we do with our computer, storage is an important part of our system. Nowadays, we have been holding more and more information on our PC. In old drives, the rotating speed was low, so the overheating problem did not exist. Why is overheating critical for a hard drive? The best way to understand how a hard disk works is to take a look inside the drive to see the internal work of each part in relation to overheating.

The Platters (magnetic physical media).

The platters (disks) carry the data. They are made from light aluminum or optical glass and ceramic, and are coated with a magnetic layer. When the drive heats up, the platters expand, changing their size and geometry. This destroys the magnetic layer on the surface where the data is stored, and creates defects and micro cracks.
Physical damage of the surface leads to the appearance of “bad” or unreadable sectors.

The Read/Write Heads.

The read/write heads of the hard disk are the interface between the platters on which the data is stored and the electronic components that make up the rest of the hard disk. The heads read from and write data on the platters. The read/write heads do not make contact with the media. This distinguishes hard disk drives from floppy disks, VCRs and tapes. Drive heads float over the surface of the disk without ever physically touching the platters. When the air inside heats up, the distance from the platters to the heads gets smaller, which increases the possibility of a head crash.

The Head Actuator.

The head actuator is a device attached to the heads, and is responsible for their moving around the platters. All modern drives have a voice coil actuator, which controls the position of the head over the correct cylinder. Since overheating is a cause of damage of any parts of the drive, the actuator is not an exception. Therefore, the head actuator failure directly affects the hard drive performance.

Controller Chip.

The circuit board(s) attached to the outside of the HDA (Head Drive Assembly) provides control of the movement of internal parts. Modern models have SM and VCM (Spindle Motor and Voice Coil Motor) controller chip soldered into the board. It is obvious that even a small temperature jump, for example, in the summer time, can lead to the burning of SM and VCM controller chip. Taking into account the importance of your data, you can imagine how unpleasant would be the consequences of such.

What is the optimum temperature that will prolong the drive life (and that of your data!) and how to maintain this temperature?
Most used 7200 RPM hard drives generate more heat than 5400 RPM drives. Ideally, a hard drive should run under 40 C. If it runs under 50 C it is probably still acceptable. If it keeps working at 60C you will have a problem and if it still keeps working at 70 C you will have a REAL PROBLEM.
As we can see, the excessive heat is not tolerated by a hard drive.

What can we do to maximize the hard drive’s life?

It is essential that the drive must be properly cooled and ventilated.
Even if your system has embedded coolers and fans, additional coolers installed in a way of cooling the hard drive directly, will improve the drive’s reliability. Just invest a small amount ($5-$35) in a cooling solution for your hard drive, and you will prevent the computer data recovery issue. By keeping your drive cool, you do not only increase the hard drive’s stability, but also eliminate drive’s crashes.

I read an article on this guy that started both an
organization and a crusade to (to hear him put it) end children
and women rape, and the particulars of the situation pissed me
off.

First of all viewing porn, much less frequenting strip clubs or
patronizing adult bookstores, has no bearing on whether one is
going to be a sexual predator. What about the priests in the
Catholic Church? They do not (or at least they should not,
anyway) do either of those things, yet some of them are guilty
of molesting young boys.

It seems that this guy, in his zeal to assuage his guilty
conscience for what he did in the past, is over-compensating
big-time. From his avenue of attack (targeting legitimate adult
businesses), I’m guessing that he used to go to such places and
it eventually landed him in jail as a criminal. So he figured
that if he were to eliminate such places, all of society’s
sexual deviance and sex crimes would be solved. It doesn’t work
that way.

Second of all, he’s not only targeting legit adult businesses,
he’s harassing those private individuals and patrons that back
them. What gives him the right to take the pictures of
law-abiding citizens who are just exercising their Free Speech
Amendment rights, and post them on his website? That would be
akin to me starting a cyber-registry - which included names and
addresses - of people who purchased guns because I don’t
particularly like guns (which I don’t), and because I shot
someone years ago by accident.

My point being that the purchase of guns (much like the viewing
or sale of legal pornography) is also protected by the
Constitution, and just because it can lead to heinous results
(in the guns’ case, death, dismemberment, paralysis, permanent
injury and/or permanent scars) doesn’t make the gun purchase any
less of a protected right.

For the most part, one must already have it within oneself to do
physical harm to another human being in order to make the leap
from simple pornophile to a sexual molester. The majority of
people who are addicted to porn or smut or adult material or
whatever you want to call it, just wind up ruining their own
personal lives, jobs, relationships, friendships, health, and/or
finances.

Learn from your friends

“How did you get the idea of airbrushing?” If it’s because your friends have been doing it, the chances are that you may be surrounded by people who can teach and help you along the way. Good for you! Get them to show you the basics. If they are good friends, get them to teach you more.

Tip : As airbrushing is an art, make sure you get good artists to show you the basics. Learn the right way from the start. Bad techniques take longer to correct than learning the right way to airbrush.

What if you have no one to show you the basics? For the beginner who has no one to show them the ropes, prepare yourself for a rollercoaster ride. The path to airbrushing can be slow and extremely frustrating. Did I say frustrating? But today, it doesn’t have to be like that. Here are a few ways to help you along the beginner’s path.

If in doubt…check the internet!

Now if you do not have a group of friends to teach you the basics, then the internet is the perfect place to find information. It is red hot with airbrushing information. It is the bee’s knees. How to articles, clubs, forums and everything else can be found there. And who will you find on airbrushing sites? Well they will range from the airbrush “champion of the world” to the beginner just like you. There are some really good people with years of experience who will help answer your questions. You will find information and tips to get you up and running.

Tip : Google or Yahoo is a great starting point. Search the keywords, airbrush tips or airbrush lessons and you will see a number of sites to help you.

Another question that you should ask yourself is this.

“So what do you want to paint with your airbrush?” For many, this will be one of the first questions you will think about. Will it be t-shirts? Or bikes? Or helmets? Or cars? Or even portraits? The airbrush is so adaptable that you might be interested in a number of mediums. Don’t worry if your heart is set on only one. The chances that you will try painting on other mediums with your airbrush will be incredibly high.

Tip : Before buying an airbrush, check around the internet and see what others are saying. Sometimes, an airbrush that a manufacturer may say is good, may only be good to smash in pieces. For quality advice, there is no better place than to visit an airbrush forum. Read reviews and don’t be shy to post on them.

Stick with the medium you first thought of airbrushing

And there my friend is another problem where most beginners will find frustrating. Wanting to be good at all mediums may cause you lots of heartache. As the saying goes “Jack of all trades, master of none.” In fact, not sticking with one medium to practise on may result in you being just “jacks@$*t”! So my piece of advice, “don’t lose focus”. Stick to the medium you chose to paint at the beginning. Learn and give it a go for a while. That is why you decided to buy the airbrush in the first place! If after a while, you don’t like it, then change.

Tip : If you are unsure of an answer to a question you have (even if it may sound like you live on Mars), ask it on a forum related to your medium. More times than not, you will have 100 other people too scared to post it. Guess who will answer it too! Yes, the airbrush “champion of the world”!

Be persistent

In my early days of airbrushing, I searched and searched for the mystical book that was going to answer all my questions and show me the best possible way to airbrush. I remember I searched every library and every bookstore. What did I find?
Confusion! Yes, in every book there seemed to be a different way to paint. A different way to prepare. A different way to mask. What did I do? Like every other male does when he sees trouble…Run!

No, running away from a difficult situation is something you should not do. Treat it like a challenge and you will head down the road of airbrushing success. Be persistent. Whatever you do, don’t give up. If you think that it is all too hard and want to give up, remember the “Ebay shuffle”.

Yes, look at Ebay and see how many other “so called” airbrush artists are selling their equipment after only a few weeks of taking up the hobby. The numbers are scary! self-defeating mistake you could ever make.

Instead of saying: “This is too expensive”, say :” I can’t
afford it, at least for the time being”

And work toward being able to afford it, that is, change
yourself, put yourself in a position where you can afford it, or
any thing you want, for that matter. A position where you will
no longer find it “expensive”.

Your reasoning should always be: ” What can I do about it?” (so
that I’ll no longer “find” it expensive.) You see, things just
“happen” in the same way, to everyone.

The only important thing is how you “perceive” them and what you
do about them.

For example, if you had $ 1 billion you probably would not find
this very same car “expensive”.

Once you realize that reality depends on perception, all you
have to do is change your perception, i.e. the way you “see”
things.

Realize that you actually are the center and creator of your
reality.

Ultimately, we are all “self-made”, but often, we don’t even
know it!

The way you see the world depends on a “program” that was
installed in your brain by education, culture, environment, in
general.

The vast majority of us just follow this initial programming,
and stumble through life like pre-programmed robots.

But when we reach awareness, we can reprogram ourselves and
enjoy the whole process, too!.

So, work hard on yourself because it has often been said that
“What you become is far more important than what you get” And:
“Most of what you have today you have attracted by becoming the
person you are today.”(Jim Rohn)

Work harder on yourself than on anything else, and “reprogram”
your belief system.

Once aware, you can walk tall and proud, because NOW YOU KNOW

You know that you are the Creator and Master of your own Destiny.

Now you can sit back and enjoy a preview of your future.

You smile because you like what you see: things are going
exactly according to plan, according to the screenplay, which
was written by none other that yourself.

You produce and direct the movie. You play the leading part. You
define the casting. You are in control! ……

But the most delectable part is when you actually live through
the whole thing. A delicious feeling of “dejà vu”!

Now, consider your lovely self as always “under construction”.
Work on yourself. There is always room for improvement.
