Imagine returning from your holiday to find your windows broken, your cars and possessions stolen and your pets gone. Your space has been violated.

Relax it shouldn’t be necessary to answer that because with the proper preparation you can discourage intruders and have a carefree vacation.

Worry shouldn’t be on the agenda when you are vacationing. Your holiday is a treat that should be enjoyed without stressing about the safety of your home. By planning ahead you minimize your risk of something going wrong while you are gone.

Depending on how long you will be gone there are a few common sense things you can do for your home, pets and possessions.

Discourage thieves by getting a house sitter. This is the best way to ward off trouble. If you know someone who will regularly stop by your house - water your plants and turn on the lights you are lucky. If you have animals you might want to think about hiring a house sitter for while you are away. This way your pets are properly cared for and your home is safer. Peace of mind is worth some extra money. If you are going to hire a house sitter - make sure you use reliable and trustworthy service! Ask around.

If you can’t get a house sitter the goal is to make your house look lived in. It’s a good idea to have a trusted neighbor to look after your home. Someone who can keep an eye on your property and who has a contact number for you should anything go wrong.

There are all kinds of timers you can buy that make it seem like there are people in your house. Light timers and radio timers can be very effective in deterring criminals.

Think about the state of your lawn before you leave. Overgrown grass is a loud signal that there is nobody home.

If you are going to be gone long enough for your post to pile up make an arrangement with a neighbor to pick it up - a pile of unopened mail is an obvious signal to criminals that nobody is home.

Even if you aren’t going away for a long time there are some things that you need to do every time you leave the house.
- Always lock your door and leave a key with someone to check on your home while you are gone.

- Turn on the radio/TV and leave some lights on

- Do not leave your spare key under the doormat or in any of the equally obvious hiding places. Rather give a copy to someone else and don’t have a spare key anywhere in your garden while you are home. If you MUST hide your key on the property be creative! That blue rock in the backyard under the tree behind the shed is a better/safer bet.

-Develop a reciprocal relationship with your neighbors. Watch their houses when they are away; keep your eyes and ears open for strange happenings and ask them to do the same for you. Group0 together and form a neighborhood watch of some sort
.
If you follow these tips you can be sure your chances are good that you will return to a secure house. If something has happened while you were out; here are some signs to look for

- Broken windows or door should be a major alert that something is wrong. Don’t go inside! Call the police and have them check the property.

- If you think you have been broken into don’t touch anything; you want to keep the scene preserved for investigation.

Sure, you’re reasonable and try your best to be kind to others. But unfortunately, talking sense into some people is like beating your head into a brick wall repeatedly. The bullying personality shows up just anywhere– at home, in the workplace, in your circle of friends.

There’s no point in trying to initiate a mature compromise with someone who behaves in a near-deluded manner. Why would someone be so manipulative and self-protective? Don’t they know how much they hurt others? The answer is: there is no answer, and it isn’t your problem. If you can’t physically remove yourself from someone who tries to control you and others, you can do the next best thing - learn to cope. Here are some Bully Prototypes and how to deal with each of them.

1. Your Boss the Bully.

Unfortunately, people in power positions often have issues. The Classic Bully Boss displays micro-managing tendencies, is self-absorbed, controlling, and narcissistic. He will lie through his teeth and try to put the blame on you when things fall through the cracks. You can’t trust a bully like this as far as you can throw him.

Solution: Never lose faith in your own abilities, no matter what crap this person is dishing. Communicate with your bullying boss as little as possible; if you must speak, toss a few compliments his or her way through your teeth. Then, get to work building up alliances with everyone else except for this person, including his boss. You will quickly learn that your bullying boss bullies everyone, not just you. Hey, with any luck maybe you can get him fired!

2. Your Parent the Bully.

Having a parent who is manipulative and hurtful is one of the toughest things to deal with in life. Growing up with a bully in the family can mean that you’re forever caught in the Wrong… even when you know you’re right. A bullying parent uses passive-aggressive tricks to turn you into a fighter by nature… forever on the defensive!

Solution: The first thing you must do to preserve your sanity is get away from them as soon as you can. Move out on your own as soon as you’re of age. The next step is to suggest they seek help. If they refuse, which is likely as bullies typically live in total denial, you are simply going to have to behaviorally control them. That means that every time you’re in their presence and they start picking fights and playing mind games with you, just leave. EVERY single time. Tell them that you will not tolerate them behaving in an infantile manner, and then make yourself scarce. If these incidents make you feel upset, seek shelter with a loving and understanding friend who can play the role of supportive nurturer where your parent does not. Above all, never feel guilty, no matter what the bullying parent tells you. You have done nothing wrong!

3. Your Partner the Bully.

This is a tough one. Why would you ever think of dating someone who is unreasonable… or worse, find yourself married to them! People who end up permanently attached to controlling personalities probably were heavily influenced by someone in their family who was probably also a bully.

Solution: If you feel that your spouse or partner is forever turning the tables on you, backing you into conversation traps, and generally sucking the life out of you, go talk to a counselor and get some insight into your own personality. Find out what makes you tick, and why something that happened in your past might be causing you to seek approval from someone who will never give it. When you feel strong enough to stand on your own two feet, suggest that the Bully also seek help in the form of therapy. If they continue to refuse, you must leave them, no two ways about it. This isn’t easy, especially if you’re raising a family together, but that’s what you must do. Seek advice and support from loving friends and other family members, and of course your therapist.

You are in no way indebted to any other human being in your life other than you. You are free to go. If someone is trying to control you, just run! Run far, far away. Seek professional help. Learn to love yourself and live a life without guilt and strife. You can do it!

Everyone that starts to learn a programming language needs a book. Period. There’s no way around it. Sure you have loads of info on the internet even complete and detailed tutorials. But nothing replaces a good book. The real problem is to find a good book in the local book store. You’ll get tons of computer programming books. Some decent, some really bad, some cheap, some stupidly expensive.

First of all you have to decide what to learn. That’s difficult, believe me. There’s TONS(!!!) of programming languages. All of them claim that it will be only language one year from now. That everything else will become obsolete. Start by one. Any one. As long as that programming language is widely used. If you’re interested in web development (like I am) go for PHP. If you want to program on the Microsoft Windows environment, then go for C#. It’s entirely your pick.

Now, were to start looking for a book? The best way is to find someone you trust and that actually have the book. Not someone that eared from someone that that computer programming book is decent. No, that will not work. Then you ask to pick the book and look at the inner pages for a while. Read a couple of lines and decide if you understand the language used. Some authors of programming books can be cryptic on the English. After that, look at the index. If it pretty much covers it, then you’re on the business. That’s the book for you.

I can give you insight on some books. I like O’Reilly books, Wrox, and a few others. Drop me a mail or a comment on a particular language and I’ll try to find out if I have a good book about it.

Floral design is an art and for some it comes easy. If you have tried and failed or never tried at all, take heart, all is not lost. The beauty of learning at home is that if you make mistakes, it does not matter if it looks a bit funny. With some helpful tips and practice you can become proficient at it.

From my years as a designer, I have learned some helpful ideas that will make the journey easier.

1) The first thing I would do is to rent from the library or buy a floral design book. I used books liberally in the beginning to learn about the various floral supplies and get familiar with them. Also you get to see pictures of designs and in most books they will take you step by step on how to do it.

2) Start with the simplest of designs. Follow the step by step instructions and pat yourself on the back for each little step you do that works out. Do not fall in the trap of getting down on your-self if it does not look right.

3) Do the same beginners design over and over again until you really get proficient at it. Then take on a different design and do that over and over until you’ve got it down, and so on.

4) Now that you’ll have practiced several designs and you are feeling comfortable doing it, I’m going to give you an important tip that can take you from becoming a good designer into a great designer. I consider this one of the most important learning tools. This is what changed my floral designs. Take your tips from nature. Once I had some basic skills from doing it over and over, I started to observe flowers, plants and shrubs as they grow in nature. Really, really look at how they grow naturally. If you mimic nature, you will not go wrong in your designs. Most people make the mistake of trying to make flowers perfectly symmetrical. This looks very fake and you will never see them grow that way. Some flowers are sticking out and some are tucked in and may be barely visible but still contribute to the overall look. I have even based some of my designs on how a particular tree grows. The more you observe nature and mimic that, the more successful you will be in your designs.

Some of the most successful designers in the world mimic nature and its that organized haphazard look that makes it beautiful.

If all you want to do is have flowers that make your home beautiful and more inviting, then practicing floral design can be an extremely rewarding activity. If you want to take it a step farther and learn to become a designer and make an income from it, you really can learn at home and it is a very fun activity.

Enjoy!

By now, surely everyone’s familiar with the unity candle, but did you know there are other unification ceremonies to choose from when planning your wedding?

Although the unity candle seems to have been with us forever, it’s only about ten years old. Since then, many more “two-become-one” rituals have arrived to round out the theme.

Unification ceremonies aren’t just a symbol of togetherness, they’re also very flexible parts of the ceremony. These rituals are good for “opening up” the wedding to include additional family members, such as the bridal couple’s parents. Children from previous marriages can play a part. And in a smaller wedding, the entire congregation can have a role in the ritual. The candle and rose ceremonies are good for adapting this way.

Unification ceremonies can also be “stacked.” It’s not unusual to find a wedding that includes a hand and water ceremony, for example, or a wine and rose ceremony. Some couples play music during these ceremonies and others don’t.

The timing of unification ceremonies varies, but usually they take place right before or after the exchange of vows. These ceremonies may play an especially important role in non-deminational or civil weddings, which may end rather quickly otherwise!

Let’s look at some alternatives to the Unity Candle ceremony:

Rose Ceremony

The rose ceremony is a flexible, informal ceremony especially suited to an interfaith or non-religious wedding, not to mention a garden wedding! In the rose ceremony, bride and groom exchange a single rose as their first married gift to each other. They are asked to recall this symbol of their love during the more trying seasons of marriage.

Hand Ceremony

In the hand ceremony, the bride takes the groom’s hands in hers, palms up. The officiant invites her to view his hands as a gift, and says: “These are the hands that will work along side yours, as together you build your future, as together you laugh and cry, and together you share your innermost secrets and dreams.”

The groom then takes the bride’s hands, palm side up. The officiant says, “They are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, for a lifetime of happiness, as she promises her love and commitment to you all the days of her life.”

Knot Ceremony

In the knot ceremony, the mothers of the bridal couple are given a cord, which the officiant later asks them to give to the bridal couple. The couple ties a lover’s knot, which they may save to look back on later.

Sand, Water and Wine Ceremonies

These are all mixing ceremonies suited to a Unitarian or interfaith wedding. The sand ceremony is said to arise from Apache customs, and is popular in beach weddings. In each case, the bride and groom pour sand or liquid from two separate vials into one. In the wine ceremony, they drink the mixed wine.

A nice touch is to have the bride pour white wine while the groom pours red. You can then serve rosé at the reception to remind everyone of the ceremony.

The Salt Covenant

The salt covenant is an ancient tradition, well-described in the Bible, and appearing regularly in Indian-national and Jewish weddings. Like the Jewish Huppah, the salt covenant (a mixing ceremony with ancient connotations of loyalty, protection and hospitality) is beginning to show up in non-Jewish weddings as well.

The Foot-Washing Ceremony

The foot washing ceremony (not to be confused with the Scottish bridal foot-washing ceremony, a raucous pre-wedding event) is a fascinating, solemn custom emphasizing the role of dual servitude in a marriage.

This short article hasn’t covered all the unification ceremonies: there are bread-sharing ceremonies, circling ceremonies, broom jumping ceremonies, and probably more ceremonies that are being invented right now.

But if you feel a unification ceremony might make your wedding more meaningful and personal, consider these alternatives. Don’t forget that you can use more than one!

The java programming language is becoming more and more popular each day. It is the language without which one cannot even hope to a land a job these
days. But has somebody even wondered how this language came about? There are many stories about, many books have been written. Here is my version (not approved by Sun Microsystems).

The java programming language originated in Indonesia. It was meant to be used
by the tourists that visit that country each year. Why would tourists want to use computer? Well, these are no ordinary tourists. They are rich tourists. Have
they not been rich, they would not travel half way around the world to visit this
place. Most people would be content to see just what is available near by. For
example, if you are a texan living in Dallas, you will visit the stockyards or may be the
trinity river park. If you live in New Orleans area, you would see st. mary’s
bayou. Once in your lifetime, one will probably visit Hawaii or Niagara. But
going to Indonesia and its islands, Bali, Java, etc is not for the ordinary
people. Anyway, coming back to the question why these tourists need to use
computer programs. They go there not just to have fun and also get some work
done in a fun atmosphere as these people are very important people.

From the very start java was supposed to be computer independent. That means if
you write a program in java in one computer, it should run in all computers.
This was necessary because tourists bring all kinds of computers with them.
Some bring
Windows machine, some Apple mackintosh. Some of the affluent ones bring
Sun server workstations or even a super computer.

Before starting to create java they also sought to see if there have similar
stuff done already. Even though they could find none, they found they can use
lots of feature from some existing laguages. One such language they found was C++. C++ was an advancement over the language called C. In fact, ideas of
C++ was already hidden in C. In that language, one can increment a variable,
say i, by applying the ++ operator e.g. i++. This would increase the value of
the variable i by one. If i had a value of 5, it would make it 6, etc.
What a vision!

Anyway, coming back to C++, it made an important advancement over C by introducing the idea of a class. To understand class, one has to undestand
structure which was already used in C. The structure is a group of variables.
For example, you have a name, an address, age etc. for any person. In stead of
using them separately, in C one can group them together and call it a person.
The creator of C++ said there is no need to expose these variables (name, address, etc) to the outside world. They said these details should be hidden
from the outside world. They called this concept encapsulation.

Another important
contribution of C++ was the concept of inheritence. This concept can be best
explained by example. Let’s go back to the example of the person. A person is
very general concept. There can be many different kinds of persons, e.g doctors,
lawyers, teachers, or just a bum! But each of these people have a name, an address, age etc. Even a bum has all these. The creator of C++ thought one can
define a base class call person and other classes can be derived from it. In
plain english, this would mean, a doctor is special kind of person, lawyer is
another special kind of person. Now the common attributes of all these kinds of people can be put in
the person class and special attributes can be put in the derived classes, e.g.
hospital for the doctor, court for the lawyer, and nothing for the bum.

But C++ was still complex with things like pointers, memory leak and multiple
inheritence. The pointer
concept was taken from C and it was very messy! The pointer is special type of variable
that points to other variables. Since there was no guidelines as to how to use
these pointers, it was very easy loose track of them. In a typical two thousand lines program, one would frequently end up with hundredes of pointers pointing
to thousands, some of them are pointers and some just plain variables. Needless
to say this made a large program extremely difficult to read and when the
programmer left for another company, they would have no other choice than
to just throw away his program! It was sometimes necessary to do this even
when the programmer was around and very much alive. This is because the pointers he created inside his program had taken a life of their own and defy
every attempt to predict how the program should behave.
Memory management was also another weak point of C and C++. The programmer was
responsible for cleaning up the memory their program would allocate and use.
Failure to do so will result in a crash of the whole computer.

Multiple inheritence, though sparingly used, was
another feature of C++ which made a programmer’s life miserable. It, however,
had its use, especially in job interviews. This one question, they thought,
helped them separate the wheat from the chaff.

But C++ still had some nice and simple features, like inheritence, encapsulation, etc. They are something one can describe in plain english,
something one can explain to a layman. So the creator of java decided to take
the good features of inherience, encapsulation, and polymorphism from C++,
while discarding the bad features such as multiple inherience, pointers etc.
The memory management was
improved in java where the programmer will not be held responsible for memory management. They
can clean up after themselves if they want to get extra credit, but they do not
need to. Needless to say all these was great news to the tourists in Indonesia!

Java introduced lot of clarity in notations too. For example, in C++ they
would say class doctor:person to mean doctor is derived from person.
It is obviously very cryptic. The same situation can be expressed
in java as class doctor extends person , which is much easier to understand. But there are few awkward stuff in java too especially when someone
says class bum extends person (my last bum joke)!

Java made an important contribution in the graphical user interface (GUI) area.
C++ was really lacking in expertise here. They visual C++, but worked only on
windows environment. But it did not work in UNIX systems or mackintoshes. Just
like other features of java, this was also supposed to be platform independent.
This was further necessary because one can put some little GUI on a web page which can be views over the internet. And one cannot control what kind of computers other will have.

After a while, it was necessary to call programs from one computer to another
computer. To do this, they created J2EE. I am not sure how they came
up with the name J2EE. The ‘J’ of J2EE, of course, means “Java”, and I can be
reasonably sure ‘2′ stands for ‘To’. But I do not know what the ‘EE’ part is all
about, probably some kind of extension.
Or at this point they ran out of names to think of. So they decided to
have one of those just another vague acronyms.

In the previous article, “How to Write Poems That Capture the Heart and Imagination of Your Readers”, we said that poems express ideas, experiences or emotions in a more concentrated form than ordinary articles, prose or speech. They can rhyme or be in a rhythmical composition of words. They are one of language’s most powerful forms of expression. So how can you write a poem that truly expounds what you want to say? Here are some key elements in composing and developing the poetic form. Follow these key steps to write a poem that will captures your emotions, ideas and experiences as heart-stirring word imagery.

Capture Imagery Ideas in Writing

Poems are about creating images in the mind of the reader. Use a variety of imagery ideas to like the following, to help you to accomplish this.

• Allusion – a form of indirect reference usually done in different phrases, lines or sentences

• Simile – is used to compare two or more things which are not alike by using the word “like” ((her hair is like a sparkling flow of coffee in the mountain sunlight)

• Symbolism or Metaphor – is used to compare two or more things which are dissimilar using “as” or “is” such as “all the world’s a stage”, “red as a rose”, “black as midnight down in a Cypress swamp”, etc.

Establish a Logical Progression of Thought to be used in the Poem

The lines, thoughts, and ideas expressed in your poem should flow smoothly from one to the next. Don’t jump around illogically. Let your poem flow rhythmically like a gentle stream tu8mbling through the smooth stones of a softly babbling brook in a grassy meadow.

State the Poem’s Theme in One Verse

Create a “theme verse” which can be used repeatedly in your poem to help unify its stanzas. Your poem will flow and sound much better as it is read using this key aspect. A love poem theme verse might be one which begins or ends with something like:

• Have I told you that …

• As always, thoughts of you …

• Any key word or phrase used repeatedly to begin or end a verse or stanza

Other Highly Useful Aids

To help you write your poem, try using these dynamic aids:

• A rhyming dictionary – invaluable for finding rhymes for low-frequency or difficult to rhyme words

• A Thesaurus – an indispensable tool to aid you in broadening the vocabulary used in your poem (personally, I like the Rodale’s far better than Roget’s)

• Alliteration – repetition of a consonant sound in two or more words in a phrase or line such as: beautiful bubbling brown sugar or shafts of shimmering sunshine

• Assonance – similar sounds, like alliteration, but used in the internal syllables of a string of words (birthday weather, father’s brother, further mathematics, etc. to give you an idea)

• Consonance – repetition of certain stressed syllables in a pair, group or string of words (taker, baker, maker, shaker, Quaker but not quicker)

• Onomatopoeia – words which by their pronunciation imitate sounds. Words like whistle, tweet, boom, bag, pow, crash, crunch, slam, zoom, snap, crackle, pop, and zing among many others, fit into this category

These steps will help you along in writing poetry that stirs the feelings and emotions of your readers and can help your poetry writing to excel. For other tips and techniques on composing this most-elusive form of language in context, see the companion article, “How to Write Poems That Capture the Heart and Imagination of Your Readers”.

One could say the story of the Beanie Babies begins seven years before the first beanies, even see the light of day. In 1986 the company Ty Inc is established in Illinois in the USA. The founder is a man named Ty Warner and one can believe he was a man on a mission. The story has it that the beanie baby father was already a high powered toy sales man after working for another toy company, Dakin, for several years.

The Ty Inc company releases a few different collections before the beanie babies enter the scene in the year of 1993. Nothing would be the same again for the marketing genius of Ty Warner. The legend speaks of the Original Nine, a famous group of beanies that are forever enshrined in the history of toys and collectibles. They were Legs the Frog, Flash the Dolphin, Patti the Platypus, Spot the Dog, Patti the Platypus, Chocolate the Moose, Pinchers the Lobster, Splash the Whale and Cubbie the Bear (originally named Brownie the Bear). They are all first shown to the world at the New York Toy Fair of that year.

In the following two years the Beanie Babies go from a local Chicago thing to being a nationwide talk of the town. Ty continues his strategy of selling only directly to small gift and collectible stores. This is later seen as an important part of create the enormous myth around these lovely little creatures. So called experts expect forecast that the Christmas of 1995 will be beginning of the end for the Beanie Babies, but the following year proves the utterly wrong and nothing could be further from the truth.

In the year of 1996 sales grow tenfold! Stores are screaming for more beanie babies and Ty is working hard to keep up with the demand. The legend has it that he even has to lease large airplanes to get all the beanies out to the stores in time for the Easter rush. Ty continues to tightly control the whole business and the website ty.com is launched creating a place in cyberspace where Beanie Baby trades can take place. Here also for the first time one can actually follow the retiring of the different characters, another part that contributes to the big craze around these toys.

The rest as they say, is history. Sales surpass 250 million dollars in 1996, Ty is interviewed in People Magazine and Forbes Magazine. Beanies Babies become one of the the largest crazes in toy history and with the step from just mouth-to-mouth into traditional advertising in 1996 they become unstoppable across the globe.

Kari Eriksson is an infopreneur and takes great interest in the Beanie Babies. He runs his site http://www.beaniebabiesdirectory.com where you can find articles, links and useful resources in regards to Beanie Babies.

The arrival of the Internet with its new methods of communicating through web sites, electronic mail, news groups, chat rooms, electronic bulletin boards, and commercial on-line services is an historical development much like the introduction of television or the telephone, a few generations ago. Similar to these earlier technologies, the Internet presents customers with an stirring new means for them to purchase both innovative and traditional goods and services faster and at lower prices, to communicate more efficiently, and to tap into rich sources of information that were formerly difficult to access and that now can be used to make better-informed purchasing decisions.

The Internet’s assurance of extensive consumer benefits is, however, coupled with the risk for fraud and tricks. Fraud is opportunistic, and fraud operators are always among the first to welcome the potential of a new technology. This observable fact was illustrated by the arrival, successful, and near-demise of pay-per-call technology as a commercial medium during the last decade. 900-number technology was the foremost interactive technology and still is the only interactive technology offering nearly universal access because all that is needed is a telephone. This technology has enormous potential as an alternative payment system, since each telephone could serve as a payment terminal, and no credit cards, debit cards, or checks are needed. In 1991, there were $6 billion in pay-per-call transactions. But scam operators moved in to take advantage of the technology, and the industry was slow to respond to this challenge. As a consequence, the 900-number industry’s reputation became stained by fraud and abuse, and sales plummeted to $300 million annually.

A number of the same features that made pay-per-call technology a persuasive field for fraud artists in the 1980s were low start-up costs and the potential for big profits exist on the Internet today. In fact, after buying a computer and modem, scam artists can set up and maintain a site on the World Wide Web for $30 a month or less and seek consumers anywhere on the globe. There is nothing new about nearly all types of Internet fraud. What is new and outstanding is the size of the potential market and the relative ease, low cost, and speed with which a scam can perpetrate.

If the Internet is to evade a destiny similar to that of 900-number technology, then it is important to address Internet fraud now, before it discourages new consumers from going on-line and chokes off the remarkable commercial growth now in progress and latent for advance on the Internet

Common Internet Fraud

Chain Letter Fraud

The most common frauds at Credit/Debt Management involve Chain Letter Fraud claiming to be very legal. These letters have been screening up on the Net as either posting to newsgroups or as unwanted e-mail. Mostly they claim to be absolutely legal and even quote postal regulations. According to the government authorities, chain letters are ‘illegal if they request money or other items of value and promise an extensive return to the participants. Chain letters are like playing a gamble. The important thing to notice is that it doesn’t matter how the original request is made, if the money is mailed, then it’s illegal.

Identity theft and identity fraud

Another one of the most common fraud is Identity theft and identity fraud. These terms are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone by the use of wrong means obtains and uses another person’s private data in some way that involves fraud or trick, usually for economic gain. In other words it’s a crime.

Unlike your fingerprints, which are inimitable to you and cannot be given to someone else for their use, your personal data especially your Social Security number, your bank account or credit card number and other valuable identifying data can be used, if they fall into the wrong hands, to personally profit at your expense. For instance in the Germany and Russia many people have reported that unauthorized persons have taken funds out of their bank or financial accounts, or, in the worst cases, taken over their identities altogether, running up vast debts and committing crimes while using the victim’s names. Sometime the victim’s losses may include not only out-of-pocket financial losses, but also significant additional financial costs related with trying to reinstate his reputation in the community and correcting mistaken information for which the criminal is responsible.

In one disreputable case of identity theft, the criminal not only incurred more than $100,000 of credit card debt, obtained a federal home loan, and bought homes, motorcycles, and handguns in the victim’s name, but called his victim to taunt him saying that he could continue to pose as the victim for as long as he wanted because identity theft was not a federal crime at that time — before filing for bankruptcy, also in the victim’s name. While the victim and his wife spent more than four years and more than $15,000 of their own money to restore their credit and reputation, the criminal served a brief sentence for making a false statement to procure a firearm, but made no restitution to his victim for any of the harm he had caused.

Credit card and bank account schemes are common where card and bank numbers are obtained for illegal purposes. This is similar to identity theft above.

Investment schemes

Investment schemes including market manipulation are also becoming common. Here’s an example of how it works:

John buys a large set of stock;

He then sends out a large mail saying how great the stock is to attract others to buy in;

The stock goes up;

John sells his block of stock at a major profit.

The schemes are gradually more difficult and confusing. They cost lot money to various nations every year. Following are some of them.

1 Ponzi schemes: In this the perpetrators utilize the money from recent investors to pay returns to earlier investors, until the schemes fail. Promoters normally blame government involvement for the failure of new investors to get their promised returns.

2 Investment fraud targeting seniors: These complex investment scams guarantee huge returns.

3 Promissory notes: They usually involve loans to companies made by investors in turn for a fixed amount of periodic income. However, legal corporate promissory notes are not usually sold to the general public and some schemes are fakes. The schemes often misleadingly claim insurance companies guarantee, the money invested or collateral located offshore, and promise unusually high returns.

4 Unscrupulous brokers: Regulators say they receive many investor complaints about brokers cutting corners or engaging in fraud to enrich themselves.

5 Quick divorce schemes :It is another popular scam. Generally utilizing a foreign country without ever having to leave the residing nation, false documents are sent to the victim with no legal action ever being taken.

Email scams known as ‘Phishing’

In this scam several emails are send to you by the name of popular companies requesting you to reply with your Internet banking logon information, or prompt you to click on a link and then enter your log on information. These are not genuine E-mails as the concerned company would never email you asking for your Internet banking Password and Memorable Information in full. These emails are designed and sent by criminals to trick you into giving away your log on details so that they can gain access to your accounts and steal your money and information.

Email scams that claim to offer you additional income

This scam involves a third party asking you to collect or pay funds into your account on the understanding that you then transfer the funds on to another account or overseas. In return, they offer you a commission. Though you will not receive payment for your involvement and as a result of any participation you may have, you will automatically become involved in subsequent Police investigations.

Email scams that claim you have won a Lottery prize

This scam involves a third party e-mail to advise that you have won a substantial amount of money in a lottery draw. If you reply the third party then asks you for bank account details and other such personal information to allow for the funds to be transferred to you, occasionally they may also ask for you to arrange payment of a handling fee. Please be aware that these scenarios are not genuine and you will lose any money you pay and your personal information may be used in other fraud.

Protecting Yourself Against Online Fraud

Some of the distasteful investment schemes in cyberspace are identical to those that have been used somewhere else for decades. The online world, however, represents an enormous advance in the ability of cheat artists to victimize the unwary. Some simple precautions can keep you from becoming a victim.

Don’t trust everything you read.

Carefully examine the information you get online in the same way that you would a whispered hot tip from a stranger. Work out healthy doubt and remember how easy it is for people to cover their identities online. Always remember that investment schemers will often talk up projects in distant corners of the world that can’t be easily checked out, or use never-ending technical terminology that can only be understood by experts

Never guess you know whom you are talking to.

Usually debate group and official statement boards participants may not be who they say they are. They claim to be those who suggest specific securities may have no asset qualifications and may well have hidden motives

Never believe that your online service provider polices its investment bulletin boards.

Most of them do not policies their investment to bulletin boards. The degree of postings often swamps the ones that try. Often there is nothing to stop a fraud from posting one or 100 pitches for a trick

Never purchase thinly traded, little known securities on the basis of online information.

Most of these are the securities most prone to manipulation. Unlike blue-chip stocks, the price of finely traded, low priced shares can be moved drastically through comparatively small strategic trades. For this reason the online publicity usually concerns little known junior companies

Always take the time to do your own study, based on sound information sources, and ask for the advice of a qualified, independent financial adviser

Never get fascinated by claims made about ‘inside information.’

Investment announcement and dialogue groups are riddled with imaginary hot tips that are sure to send some stock high in value. Think yourself, “If this is such great news, why are they telling me?”

These hot tips are seldom, if ever, true. Still if they are true, trading on inside information is illegal in many countries

Be on the watch for conflicts of interest.

The company whose shares they are recommending is paying some of the people who analyze and recommend securities online. Some reveal this fact, whereas others do not mention of their conflicts of concern. Make sure you know why someone is passionate about an investment opportunity

Always confirm that the security has been eligible for sale and is being sold by a person properly registered with your securities regulator.

Securities rules designed to defend investors from fraud and abuse do apply in cyberspace. Your securities regulator can tell you whether an individual or company is registered to trade or advise in your area and whether the company selling the securities has filed a prospectus.

Poet Stephen B. Wiley’s first book of poetry, Hero Island, reflects tender snapshots and reminiscent overviews of various stages of his life as a youngster working on a farm in New Jersey, summer vacations spent with his family in Northern Vermont, and his positive stance on life.

His elegant command of language magically explores and brings to life such varied topics as the shovel we are reluctant to part with, city living, opening up of the summer cottage, shucking corn, Albert Einstein and world federation, and the more weighty experience as the death of a loved one.
All are composed with a great deal of introspection and with a sincere palette of words that are easily accessible to even the inexperienced poetry reader.

Particularly touching and one that struck home is “Going,” where Wiley portrays the passing away of his ninety-four year old father-something I personally just recently experienced with the passing away of my father-in-law. The ending of the poem’s unadorned spoken language poignantly describes his inner feelings:

“I knew father wouldn’t die
I bent over his bed though
and we embraced with a kiss
as he was going.”

Above all, Wiley’s strength lies in that his poems are characterized by a sense of wonder and nostalgia with which he imbues his reflections, that is neither sad nor frustrated, as is often the case with so many poets.
Moreover, descriptions are effortless and fresh, reverberating with vitality, as exemplified in the first two stanzas of his poem To My Hands:

“Yes, yes I do admire your solo work
how you throw a ball
write your name
tip you hat

And I’m proud that things are named for you
giving a helping hand
handing down your outgrown clothes
even handing over something you shouldn’t have”

Quite noteworthy is Wiley’s remarkable skill with language, perhaps attributable to his legal training. When I interviewed him and asked him how had this affected his poetry writing, his succinct reply was “words are the subject matter of law – spoken words and written words – and precision of language is most important. Poetry draws on the same strengths.” That just about sums up the poetic style of Stephen B. Wiley.

Although, I must admit that I initially opened Wiley’s book of poems with some trepidation, my only grumble, when reaching the last poem, was that I did not have enough of it. It is my hope that Hero Island only marks the inauguration of a long and creative career.
