When you have been collecting stamps for a while, you may begin getting more involved in identifying and evaluating your collection. You will likely have learned things that help you get a more detailed idea of what your collection holds. When you reach this point, there may be a stamp collecting supply that you need to purchase. You can find most of these supplies in a product book from a supply company. You can sometimes find them in hobby shops, although smaller hobby shops are not likely to carry them. Take a look at these interesting stamp collecting supply items for intermediate collectors.

Perforation Gauge

When you are trying to correctly identify your stamps, there may come a time when you need a perforation gauge. This tool is used to measure the number of holes per 2cm length of the stamp’s perforations. Perforations are the tiny holes between the blocks of stamps. You have likely always seen them but may have never paid close attention to them at first. There may be an instance when you are dealing with two stamps that look alike and are issued the same. It is likely however that they have a different perforation count. This may or may not determine that the stamp is rarer than others that look like it or more valuable.

Watermark Detector

Another interesting supply item for an intermediate or advanced collector is a watermark detector. This tool helps you view hidden embossed or imprinted patterns on your stamp. These marks were made on the paper the stamp was printed on. Some stamps don’t have watermarks. There are cases in which two stamps seem identical, but they have different watermarks. This tool is great for properly identifying rare and unusual stamps. A watermark detector can also identify forgeries.

Stamp Magazines

When you get more interested in collecting, you will likely want to start subscribing to a stamp magazine. These magazines will help you with tips and tools of the trade. They will offer features from other collectors and will show you different products and tools to use in collecting. They are very interesting and can be wonderful gifts for an avid stamp collector. A stamp magazine is one stamp collecting supply that every collector will enjoy. It can be a great way to see what other collectors are doing and what the experts have to say about stamp collecting as well.

There is a difference between heavily scented candles, richly scented candles and triple scented candles. Many people believe that all three mean that the candle has a strong scent that will last until the candle burns out completely. For the most part, heavily scented candles means that a larger than normal amount of fragrance has been added to the wax in the candle making process. In general, one-half ounce is the normal amount of essential oil added to the melted wax. In heavily scented candles, this amount is tripled so that one and a half ounces are added.

If you buy heavily scented candles that are not wrapped, there is a very good chance that the scent will be gone from the candle long before the candle is burned out. This is because the scent from a heavily scented candle does evaporate into the air when it is exposed. Another way of finding out whether or not a candle is heavily scented is to see whether or not you can smell the candle when you are standing a distance away from it. Most people that buy a heavy scented candle do not intend to burn it and want it mainly for its decorative effect.

You have many different options when buying heavily scented candles. There is a wide variety of colors and scents for you to choose from. If you are making your own heavy scented candles, then you can decide how much of the fragrance you want to include. This sometimes requires some experimenting on your part and you can combine several different fragrances to achieve something completely unique. A heavily scented candle can also be custom made according to your specifications regarding the particular scent and color.

All kinds of candles are included in heavily scented candles. You can have tapered, pillar, votive and tealight candles with as heavy a scent as you wish. One thing you need to keep in mind when making or buying heavy scented candles is that some people are allergic to specific scents. If you have guests coming over and you know that one or more of them is allergic to scents, then you should remove the heavily scented candle until after they leave. You also have to keep this in mind when choosing to give a heavily scented candle as a gift.

Heavily scented candles help to really cover up smells of cooking or smoke. You don’t have to worry that guests will be able to tell exactly what you had for dinner or that you accidentally burned something in the kitchen when you have a heavy scented candle around. For even greater effect, you can light the heavily scented candles and let all different scents mix together to create a unique atmosphere. If you have candles with a variety of scents, it might be a good idea to try this first, just to see what the result will be. It may not be the best effect in the world.

Man oh man! You know I’d like to think I’m smarter than the average bear, but sometimes I amaze myself with my lack of common sense and good judgment.

You know the emails circulating about helping those poor souls (tongue in cheek) “hide” their money overseas? You know the ones I mean, they come addressed to you from the Prime Minister of This and That country, all desperate to sneak their cash out of the country before the roof falls in… promising you the moon if you’ll only “help” them.

All scams of course, we all know that, but…

Well, DUH!

I must get 10 of these a week. I KNOW what they are, even when they change the subject line - my esp is going ballistic - my finger hovers over the delete without opening key - and STILL 10 times out of 10, I’ll click that little puppy open, just to be sure.

You know why I open it? I open it on the remote and totally unlikely chance that it WILL be someone I know, truly needing my help.

I swear… Now who’s kidding who?

Okay, so maybe the “desperate” appeal works - too often. But, tell me, would YOU be willing to play such a con line over and over AND hope to walk away with your integrity intake? I think not. I certainly hope not.

Recently I read and published Sam Knight’s latest article entitled, “What’s The Matter People and Why Aren’t They Reading My Ads!” I laughed myself blue in the face, she just writes so well! And, in my smug little way, I sat there confident that no one was “getting to me” in such a fashion.

And then, what, just two hours later, I’m clicking open the very next “Dear Sir or Madam, please help me!” letter.

Unbelievable (shaking head at oneself).

Integrity, truth in advertising, taking the high road, call it what you want, but you and I both know it is the only true road to success.

The redeeming factor to all this? Study the subject lines in your own inbox. Figure out what really ticks you off and what actually prods you to open those emails and use them to your best advantage.

All the while maintaining a much higher level of professionalism, of course.

To your success!

Popup windows - hate ‘em or love ‘em; they are a constant
companion during our Internet surfing. They can be quite useful,
especially the chromeless variety.

A chromeless popup window is one that doesn’t show the browsers
menu or tool bar, but does retain the title bar (for easy
closing). Some visitors have so many options on their tool bars
that they take up over a quarter of the screen height!

Chromeless popup windows are a great way to deliver list
information and extra help for filling in forms without bogging
down your pages.

There are many scripts available for creating popups, but
sometimes you’ll just want something simple that won’t require
you to incorporate 100 lines of JavaScript!

This particular chromeless popup window procedure will work in
Netscape and IE Versions 4+. It will create a link activated
window of a fixed size, but will allow for scrollbars if
necessary.

To view a demo, click on the “20 second site survey” link on the
right hand menu of our home page:

http://wwww.tamingthebeast.net

INSTRUCTIONS:

First, create and save a standard page with the information you
wish to be displayed in the popup window. The elements should be
placed within a table structure. Suggested width of table:
around 330 - 350 pixels.

And if you want to create a “Close this Window” statement in the
page:

Close this window< d>

If you choose not to include this snippet, visitors will still
be able to close the window via the popup window title bar
controls.

Second, the script to launch the chromeless popup window. Copy
and paste this into the HTML (between the and
tags) of the page you wish to launch the popup from (change the
properties in capital letters to suit):

You can change width and height to suit, but don’t make it too
narrow, otherwise site visitors will need to scroll horizontally
to view the content. Too wide a setting will cover the majority
of the screen area for those users still running 640×480
resolution.

When copying scripts like the one above, ensure you paste it
into Notepad first; then copy it again and transfer it to your
HTML. Copying and pasting code straight from a web page can
produce some pretty weird results.

Next, the hyperlink to use to engage the script (Change the
properties in capital letters to suit):

Done!

If you are looking for a script to create an automated site
entry or site exit popup window, check out our free javascript
code generators section, specifically:

http://www.tamingthebeast.net/scripts/windowsframesjavascripts.ht
m

but, use with caution - I don’t know many visitors who upon
entering a site and seeing a popup window yell, “whoopeee!!!”

Gauge is the number of stitches per inch and the number of rows per inch produced when working with a particular size of yarn and a specific hook. Gauge varies from crocheter to crocheter, even when they are using exactly the same yarn and hook. To get beyond this problem a swatch, or small sample piece is made in the stitch pattern using the size of yarn and hook. A swatch will help you determine if you meet the patterns intended gauge. For the best results, make a crocheted swatch of at least 6 inches square and then measure the stitches in the center of the swatch to determine gauge.

Often a crochet pattern doesn’t suggest a gauge swatch. It may say instead 4 stitches and 4 rows = 1 inch. To make a swatch make about six inches of chain. Lay the piece flat on a table. Count how many stitches there are in one inch. This is your stitch gauge.

Next, count the number of rows in one inch. This is your row gauge. Row gauge becomes important, when complicated stitch patterns repeat after a number of rows. If the shaping must take place at a certain row and your row gauge is different from the pattern gauge, shaping won’t be done at the proper time and your garment may not fit properly.

Usually, if your stitch gauge matches, the row gauge will be close enough for most purposes.

If your gauge is larger than the one described in the pattern, use a smaller hook try another swatch. If your swatch is smaller, then you’ll need to increase your hook. As hooks vary between manufacturers, you may find that switching hook brand can help you to reach the right gauge.

-A swatch should be at least two inches square.

-Always make a square swatch – it’s easier to make an accurate count.

-Try not to force your tension, but crochet just like you always do.

-If you naturally crochet tightly, use a size larger hook than recommended.

-If you naturally crochet loosely, use a size smaller hook than recommended.

-If your foundation chain is too tight or too loose, begin the pattern with another size hook.

-Always measure the swatch on a hard, flat surface.

Providing Tips and Help with Crochet for the beginner and more experienced. How to Use Crochet

Most of us use a PC these days, but how many of us are really serious about securing it? Well, not most of us! They just need to get their job done sitting on the PC and hence look no further. But they do find themselves in great trouble when the PC crashes, files are corrupted, login information are stolen or attacked by viruses and malwares. Now, we know that “prevention is better than cure” and “self help is the best help”. So according to the lines of these famous proverbs, I will try to highlight some tips through which a newbie user would be able to secure his PC. This article even applies to advanced and experienced users alike. So read on and help yourself to ward off your PC security woes.

1. Use an Antivirus

In the era of high-speed internet and portable media, you just cannot afford to compromise your PC and valuable data. So, Antivirus software is a must for each and every PC user. The Antivirus stays active in the system memory and monitors your file transfers, network/internet connections, and programs for suspicious activities and keeps away harmful computer viruses, worms and trojans from playing devil on your PC. It can even clean, heal or quarantine affected files already on your PC and keeps your data safe.
There are many AntiVirus Packages available, out of which many are free to use.

Some of the free packages are:

a. AVG Free Edition: http://www.free.grisoft.com
b. Avast! Home Edition: http://www.avast.com
c. Antivir Personal Edition: http://www.free-av.com

2. Use a Firewall

To protect your PC with network/internet connection from the prying eyes of hackers and abusers, it’s a necessity to install a Firewall software. A firewall is simply a piece of software that sits between your PC and the outside world (network/www) and allows certain programs/data to pass through it, thus filtering the traffic based on configured rules.
Like Antivirus softwares, the list of firewall softwares is also long…and there are a number of free options available.

Some of the free packages are:

a. ZoneAlarm Free: http://www.zonelabs.com
b. Kerio Personal: http://www.kerio.com
c. Outpost Free: http://www.agnitum.com
d. Sygate Personal: http://www.sygate.com

3. Use an AntiSpyware/Adware

Every passing day gives birth to a score of new malware, which is any sort of program written solely to get itself installed on the victim’s PC without his knowledge, monitor his activities/logins and send them to a hacker for identity theft. Similarly there are adwares which deliver unwanted advertisements and spoofs/redirects browser addresses. Thus, you never know that the form which you have filled 10 minutes ago is not from the original site! To protect your PC against these nasty pests, you need an Anti-Spyware/Adware package.

Some of the free packages are:

a. Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org
b. Adaware: http://www.lavasoft.com
c. MS Antispyware: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

4. Backup Often

It is really important to backup your valuable data often so that you can get a copy at hand when there is a system crash, virus attack or hacking. Just keep only the important files and folders as backup and not your whole disk! A habit of backing up never upsets you in the long run. It is a good idea to backup your data on a different hard-disk or removable, cheap media like CD, DVD, and Pen-drives to name a few. There are many free and paid softwares to choose from.

5. Follow Some Good Habits

a. Do not ever give out your password/login information to anyone.

b. Don’t give out your credit card number or any online banking login to anyone.

c. Use a strong password which is difficult to guess; containing alphabets, numbers and special characters.

d. Password protect or encrypt confidential, valuable information to avoid being abused by someone.

e. Always set a password for your Operating System/BIOS logon.

f. Don’t open suspicious email attachments or knowingly send someone an infected file.

g. Do not mount a known virus affected media to a PC without Antivirus protection.

h. Don’t reply to emails asking for confidential login information even if they seem to come from the company or website. It might be a phishing attempt.

i. Do not reply to spam messages or scam emails like “You have won $10million lottery sum!”. If you reply to spam emails, the spammers become aware of your activity and spam you even more. Just ignore them and keep the spam filter on.

j. Don’t post your email id all over the internet (e.g.-forums)…spam bots might be harvesting them. Use myid[at]provider.com format.

To conclude, I would like to say that the steps that have been outlined above are not too difficult or time consuming to follow. You would certainly benefit by using those precautions and measures to secure your computer. Remember, if you secure your own PC, you not only help yourself, but many other users too. So spread the word and start acting now…Good Luck!

iPod users start to get the picture and it’s turning out to be colorful fun!!

The latest generation of hi tech gadget users are watching the different media they use start to converge as Apple launches its latest grab for the market with iPod Photo. Not only can you listen to all your music on the go, or organize your business and social life, but now your entire photo collection can be viewed at hand too. With the latest color screens iPod users can turn the favorite toy into a slideshow which is set to music. Watch this with friends hanging out at the beach or connect it to your TV and away you go.

Imagine putting your holiday photos to your own sound track and being able to view it wherever you want, well this is now possible to do, and with the 60GB version you can hold up to 25,000 photos. Of course, if you want to mix these up with music the storage would be shared but still with the longer lasting battery in the new generation of iPod you can get up to 5 hours of slideshow or 15 hours of music according to Apple.

All this is possible to use with your Apple Mac or PC using Autosync to make the synchronization of your music and pictures automatic. Visitors to http://www.auctions-andmore.com/articles2/3 are informed of many of the features of the latest iPods and the best deals around for purchasing these items. From their website you can access hundreds of online deals for the whole range of iPod products.

The latest iPods are set to rock the market once again with their latest visual addition. The only question is….where will all this convergence end up? Soon these multi function devices may move into the area of telecommunications with the prospect of watching digital TV or videos. Perhaps our mobile phone will become our MP3, video and still camera with 5 mega-pixel definition. Who knows? But for the time being Apple have once again moved ahead in the hard-drive, hand-held multi-media gadget race.

iPod is produced by Apple which can be found at: www.apple.com.

In this age of the mobile phone, walkie talkies, or two-way radios, seem like an anachronism. However, many people who grew up before the 1990s may recall that no respectable private eye or detective story was complete without a walkie talkie being used while following a suspect or chasing a criminal!

You may not be the sort who likes to follow suspects or chase criminals as part of your daily activities, but you could still use a walkie talkie in your daily life. If you enjoy outdoor activities, love to go motorcycling, work in a school, college, pub or club or look after a little baby at home, you would find a walkie talkie a very useful gadget. You may need a walkie talkie system if your job requires you to move around from one point to another within a three kilometre range. The benefit over mobile phones is that they are license free and do not have any associated call charges.

For instance, you can use a regular baby monitor if you are at home downstairs and your baby is asleep upstairs, but what happens if you need to visit a neighbour? Some walkie talkies have a wider range than regular baby monitors and also include a “baby monitor” mode. You can leave one radio in the baby’s room and take the other wherever you go—when the baby wakes up or begins to cry, you will know at once. The Cobra MT725 Value Pack is ideal for this.

Workers in pubs or clubs, or teachers and staff members in schools and colleges would find walkie talkies very effective and useful when communicating with colleagues. In both cases, workers and staff members may have to respond to emergencies, and may not be near a telephone. Walkie talkies can be clipped onto belts, and come with an earpiece-microphone combination to enable discreet communication. All you need to do to send a message is to press the Push to Talk button on the handset.

Motorcyclists can use a walkie talkie system that fits into their motorcycle helmets, along with the Push to Talk button that is mounted on the motorcycle handlebar or the recommended voice activation via a MICVOX. If you plan a motorcycle holiday with a group of friends, this system should enable you to stay in touch, over a distance of a mile, in all kinds of weather. You will also find a walkie talkie very useful on a skiing or mountaineering holiday—you may not be able to use mobile phones in the mountains or abroad as the roaming charges may be more than you want to pay!

If you are on the lookout for a suitable walkie talkie, all you need to do is take a virtual walk down our aisles at BB-Shopping.com. We stock Cobra and Entel Euro-Wave walkie talkies that you can use at home and outdoors. You can also purchase walkie talkie accessories and download manuals from our site.
