Are you one of those people who have a valuable gun, china, or doll collection? You know the type: You visit a home and find an amazing selection of items laying around the house or stored in a display area for accessible viewing. It may be the collection began innocently enough, perhaps with a long-ago birthday gift or holiday present. That item became particularly special to its owner, who relished it so much that he decided to start collecting similar pieces to multiply the joy coming from ownership of the prized possession.

It takes many years for most people to build up a sizable collection of objects. As they do, though, it may be tempting to put them on display for others’ pleasure, too. But if the collectible pieces are valuable, and especially if they are breakable, the owner would be prudent to take important steps in protecting the expensive collection.

1. Check the authenticity of each piece you plan to purchase for your collection. Unless you are buying from a trusted or approved dealer, you will want to make sure that you are getting the genuine article. Many collectibles come with verification certificates, so if yours doesn’t, have it checked out by a professional to be sure it’s what you think it is and not a substitute.

2. Keep track of your collection. Don’t let anyone borrow from it, or if they do, fill out a card with the person’s name and contact information, along with the date it was borrowed and when it should be returned. Describe or number the piece to make it easy to track.

3. Store all items together if possible. Keeping them in the same area or room will make it easier to detect when one goes missing or gets broken. Keep them in an area that is less traveled than others. It should be orderly and neat to help protect collectibles from breakage if someone should stumble or trip or something on the floor or sticking out from a shelf or table.

4. Keep your collection clean. Learn how to take care of collectibles to keep them free of dust, lint, stains, or other potential problems due to mishandling them or sitting a long time in the same place. You may have to buy special polish for jewelry, silverware, or guns, for example, and learn the correct way of keeping them clean.

5. Guide visitors’ perusal of the collection. Store the pieces in a locked glass case if you don’t want anyone to touch them. You can leave them out in the open, on the other hand, and instruct guests about how to handle or otherwise touch each item.

Keep the container or storage case clean, as well, Prevent kids and pets from playing in the general area of your collection, to avoid possible breakage or damage.

Every person who uses a personal computer will eventually face the challenge of data recovery. Computer hardware and software can be temperamental from time to time. Hard drives and other mechanical components of personal computers and servers do not last forever, and when they fail recovering your data can be difficult, time consuming and costly.

If you are working diligently away on a document or spreadsheet in Microsoft Office and the power goes out, you may still be able to recover the documents you were working on when the lights come back on. This type of data recovery is relatively easy and straightforward. Software manufacturers recognize that power outages are inevitable and unpredictable and most office applications incorporate what is known as autosave features. At set intervals, the documents you have open are saved to a cached file. They remain in that cached state and should be accessible once your power is restored. Simply opening Microsoft Word or Excel will usually bring these documents back.

For instance, when you open Word after a power failure or a software error, you will be presented with a document followed by the word recovered in parentheses. This is the document you were working on at the most recent autosave point. You may still lose a couple minutes worth of work this way, but it sure beats having to go back and retype the entire document.

If the recovered document does not appear automatically, search your hard drive for files ending with tmp. Look for one created close to the time of the power failure or software error and open it. This is most likely the document you had open at the time. If this method of data recovery does not work, you may need to follow the steps listed below.

Of course not all data recovery is so easy and so straightforward. If you delete a file accidentally, it is a simple matter to recover it from the recycle bin. Once you empty the recycle bin, however, things become more difficult. The deleted file still resides on your computer somewhere, but the pointer that tells the program where to find the file is now gone. There are various software tools available that promise to help recover deleted files, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Some of the major players are Norton, McAfee and Computer Associates. There are a great many smaller vendors as well.

Even if all these products fail to recover your data, you may not be completely out of luck. Data recovery services specialize in recovering data from failed and corrupt hard drives. These data recovery services have tools and equipment not available to the general public.

Government and law enforcement forensic teams will often make use of these advanced data recovery techniques to investigate cases of computer crime. Businesses also will turn to a professional data recovery service to recover mission critical data from damaged hard drives.

It is important to choose a reputable firm any time you need to have data recovery services performed. The firm you choose should be able to provide references from previous clients. You should make sure to follow up with the references they provide.

The cost for the data recovery service will vary according to the type of equipment and the difficulty of the job. You should get several estimates to make sure you are paying a fair price for the service you receive.

misconceptions that prevent many people from experiencing that,
which would drastically improve their lives. This is true with

One of the most common and mis-used phrases relating to the Web is ‘Content is king’. More often than not, the truth is more like ‘Content is lacking’. This is because Web developers’ bosses or clients tend to confuse a good-looking site with one that’s useful. It’s a legacy from the days of print marketing, when ultra-glossy brochures and catalogues were essential to promote a successful company image.

But on the Web, such a policy falls flat on its face, because big graphics files take ages to download. Curious about what your site looks like to those without access to the latest technology? Then unplug that leased line, replace it with a 56K modem, set your display to 800 x 600 with 256 colours, and switch off the external CPU cache in your PC’s BIOS. Empty your browser’s cache and access your site now. If the home page takes much longer than ten seconds to load, or looks badly designed, you can bet that a sizeable proportion of new visitors to your site will get bored and go elsewhere.

There are simple steps you can take to increase the load speed of your site. First, don’t do as one Webmaster did, and assign four separate image files to four identical home page logos, thus ensuring that the page took around three times longer to load than was necessary… On a more sensible note, treat your graphics images as MP3 files - be aware that you can remove some of the ‘unseen’ data and yet maintain the quality appearance of your site.

Choose your format carefully. JPEG is great for photos and other colour-rich images; use standard encoding rather than progressive encoding, as some older browsers don’t support the latter. JPEG is a lossy compression format, and on the Web you can afford to lose a bit of detail in order to save space. Typically a 30-40% compression level will retain enough detail to keep the image usable, while dramatically reducing the size of the image. Some images - notably those with plenty of continuous tones - will compress better than others. Experiment with compression settings until you’re happy with the result.

For small buttons, logos and other navigational icons, GIF is often preferable. It requires less processing power to decode, and the files are often smaller than JPEG where few colours are involved. Use an image editing program that allows you to set the number of colours as 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256. Many programs only allow 4, 16 and 256, which will inevitably lead to waste. Experiment with colour reduction; in most cases you should be able to reduce your navigational buttons to 16 colours or fewer with no loss of image quality. If you find that you require at least 128 colours for a particular file, consider changing it to JPEG format, as this could save more space.

Other tips:

When shrinking images, resize first and reduce colour depth second, for the best anti-aliasing results.

Reduce colour depth in steps - 256 to 128 to 64 to 32 to 16 - as this will often produce better weighted colours than a jump from 256 to 16.

Whichever format you use, be sure to save images at a resolution of 72 dpi, as anything higher is a waste when images are displayed on screen.

HTML pages can also be pared down to a minimum. There’s plenty of software around that will help with this task - a search on ‘HTML optimisation’ or ‘HTML compression’ will lead you in the right direction.

Include WIDTH, HEIGHT and ALT tags in all your image references, so that people can navigate your site while the graphics are still loading.

Only use graphics where you need them. A good designer can produce a clean, attractive and easy-to-navigate site with just a few well-placed image files.

Above all, remember this: Web surfers have a very short attention span, so a fast site is a popular site.

The idea for cell phones has been around for a lot longer than the technology to provide them was. As soon as the first landlines came into use, people had the idea of improving the convenience and flexibility of this new communication medium, and of bringing it to new areas such as cars. At first, cell phones were little more than two way portable radios, but as technology improved, the concepts behind cell phones improved rapidly.

Bell labs and Motorola were both involved in a dramatic race to see who could invent the first viable cell phones. While Bell labs had installed innovative radio systems into police cars, these devices were far too large for anyone to carry around and were thus impractical as a truly mobile telephone. However, in 1973, Martin Cooper, a scientist working for Motorola successfully made the first ever cell phone call using a portable handset. The age of the cell phone was at last born, and who did he call? None other than his rival at Bell Labs, Joel Engel, who had been racing with him to create the invention.

Within a couple of years, both Bell and AT&T had come up with prototypes of their own and the first trial areas were set up. Chicago and Tokyo were the first cities in the world where you could use a cell phone but their availability was extremely limited and the new phones were only available to a select number of trial customers to begin with. For example, the 1979 trial venture in Chicago distributed cell phones to just 2000 customers.

The idea caught on like wildfire. By 1987 there were over one million cell phone users in the US alone. It seemed as if everyone wanted a cell phone and the major companies involved had really hit a home run. However, there were difficulties. For example, in the US, the FCC regulates and allocates radio bandwidth for different purposes. The radio spectrum is limited and can become ‘full’, so it is necessary to control who gets use of different parts of it. The area they licensed for cell phones, at 800 MHz was quickly crowded. However, instead of giving more, they forced the cell phone companies to improve technology and come up with more efficient ways of utilising the bandwidth they had. By the end of the 80’s this had been achieved and the cell phone age we know at present really got underway. And the rest as they say is history.

Integrating Outlook Contacts and Tasks with SharePoint:

Outlook 2003 has a one way synchronisation with SharePoint.
You can do a once only upload of your Contacts or Tasks to a specific list, but after that, you can only edit these via Internet Explorer and not via Outlook.

Outlook synchronisation with SharePoint only applies to the default set of columns in a newly created ‘Contacts List’. For example, the field ‘Children’ is not included as a default column in a SharePoint ‘Contacts List’ but it exists by default in Outlook. However, if you were to add this column to a SharePoint ‘Contacts List’ and click on ‘Link to Outlook’, any data in this column is NOT imported into Outlook.

As a workaround to this, the SharePoint ‘Contacts List’ can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet, saved as a .csv and then imported into Outlook. To use the example from above, using the ‘Children’ field in SharePoint would correctly import into Outlook via this method.

Without the use of VBA code, it is not possible to import user-defined contact fields in Outlook and have Outlook create these fields on the fly. At best, you can only map user-defined contact fields to existing default Outlook contact fields. Again, you can only do this via a contact list import from excel or a .csv etc.

A simpler and more practical way to have a list of Contacts or Tasks in SharePoint is to use the Excel 2003 Integration with SharePoint. This is able to synchronise both ways and allows you to update entries in Excel, rather than having to click around in Internet Explorer to get to a SharePoint List.

Integrating Outlook Messages with SharePoint:

Saving messages into Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server can be done from the save as menu item in Outlook 2003. This allows you to save messages in Document Library. The saving method is fine if there is only one document library you want to save this to. The way to find this isn’t very intuitive. You have to type the URL of the site and then browse to the document library.
There are a few other items to consider if you want to share your messages this way.

The searching in SharePoint is only enabled to search a few types of files.
These are:

  • Text, Html , Archived HTML, ASPX and XML Files
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Publisher Files
  • PDF Files will need the iFilter from Adobe.

** Microsoft Outlook produces .msg Files which contain the attachment as well as the body of the message. To search a .msg file, one needs an iFilter for the SQL Server Full Text Search Engine.
Also, the search only applies to documents added or changed after the iFilter
is applied. The search also looks in the metadata including the values in document
library columns. If you type in ‘Automating Legal Systems’, you’ll return all documents with
the word “Automating’ in them, plus any with the word “Legal” etc.
SharePoint Portal Server provides more detailed indexing of content so you can use document properties or column names in your search criteria, allowing more targeting searching.

If you use Microsoft Outlook (or similar applications) for e-mailing, then you are familiar with the fields at the top of a new mail message, right? Of course, in the “To…” field, you enter the name of one or more persons you intend to receive your message. Use the field labeled “Cc…” (for Carbon Copy - remember how they did it back in 1978 BC, “before computers”?) for anyone who needs to view your e-mail but is not the addressee.

But there’s an additional field that you should know about, labeled “Bcc…,” which stands for “Blind carbon copy,” or the updated version, “Blind courtesy copy.” This field is for the names of anyone that needs a copy of your e-mail without the other people (in the “To…” and “Cc…” fields) knowing about it. That’s why it’s called “Blind.”

“But wait a minute,” you might be saying. “I don’t have a “Bcc” field just after the “Cc” field in my version of Outlook.” When you launch a new mail message, you might have “To…,” “Cc…,” and “Subject…”–nothing more. That’s because “Bcc” is on a toggle; you can turn it on and off from your “View” menu. If your “Bcc…” is not showing, you can turn it on when you are in a mail message by going to the “View Menu” and selecting “Bcc Field.” A checkmark will appear and the field will become visible at the top of your mail message, just above “Subject…”. (Similar applications should also give you the option to turn “Bcc” on if it is not continuously visible.)

You should know about and carefully use “Bcc” for a number of reasons. I’m going to cover some of the most important.

Use Bcc to protect privacy – When an e-mail is sent to a whole group of people with all of their names in the “To…” or “CC…” fields, each one of them has access to the e-mail address of all the others. Normally this would not be a problem internally, but if you are sending an e-mail to employees as well as some outside of your company, use the Bcc field to hide all of those internal addresses. You will be preventing your company’s people from getting spam and other unwanted e-mails.

Use Bcc to keep upper management informed – Sometimes you are sending an e-mail message at a manager’s request, and you want to let the manager know that you complied. It may not be helpful, however, to make the manager’s name visible in “Cc,” because this may add stress or cause unnecessary concern for the addressee. If you consider that to be the circumstances, use Bcc for the manager’s copy. But this is always a judgment call, because sometimes it is important for addressees to know the manager is looking over their shoulder, especially if you have a tight deadline.

Use Bcc to make your message more personal – Do you feel differently about a message addressed solely to you versus one sent to all of your company’s employees? The same principle works in the opposite direction, as well. If you place everyone’s name in the Bcc field, then each will have the impression that you wrote your e-mail just for them. Be careful in your wording, however, because this tactic will backfire if your letter contains second-person plurals, such as “All of you may be wondering…”.

Use Bcc to keep an archive of your correspondence – This nifty trick depends of having or obtaining a separate e-mail address from your conventional business address. Place that address in the Bcc field, e.g., “yourname@freemail.com,” and Outlook will send a copy of your e-mail to that address. This can be helpful if you are wanting a quick way to keep track of all of the e-mail you send out regarding a particular project or issue.

Caution: When Bcc can backfire – There are times, however, when you should think twice before entering a person’s name in Bcc. If your addressee hits “Reply to all,” the reply will not go back to the BCC addressee(s). But still, that reply might not be worded as carefully as it would be if the sender knew everyone listed in Bcc. To put it bluntly, this is how people get insulted and feelings get hurt. If you are dealing with an issue that is the least bit touchy or even volatile, you would do well to steer clear of Bcc.

You’ve been in business for more than a couple of years, and you’ve enjoyed moderate success through positive word of mouth and by delivering a high-level quality of service. But your industry is becoming more and more competitive and the need for a more professional look is becoming imperative. Sound familiar? The truth is that in today’s market even the best companies need to sell its image and brand in order to succeed. This is achieved primarily via the company logo as it is associated with all of the company media: letterhead, envelopes, websites, business cards, brochures and advertising campaigns.

Many companies will choose to have their logo designed internally. This has the potential of producing good results, but it can depend on the talents of the individuals involved. Often times, it will be hard to come up with a high-quality logo this way. The time and resources spent on the efforts will simply not be worth it. Problems designing a logo in-house stem from the fact that it is often difficult to picture an effective marketing image when one is too closely tied to the business itself, and is all too familiar with the details and inner-workings of the company. This will often complicate the image that is attempting to be portrayed rather than clarify. Remember, a good logo design needs to be simple and eye-catching, yet unique to the company’s core mission.

The question then becomes: why not outsource to a company that specializes in logo design? There are many companies that now focus their efforts solely on logo design. There are a variety of benefits to choosing this path:

• Cost Savings: Outsourcing your design will cost you a fraction of what it would hiring an independent designer or using in-house staff.
