A router is a computer device that receives or forwards data packets to and from the Internet towards a destination in the process called routing. A router is the essential component of the computer networking that enables any sent data to arrive at the right destination.

As an illustration, imagine that the Internet is the world and one computer is one household. Other computers connected through the Internet are households around the world. Say one household will send a letter to another household in any part of the world. The letter has an address right? And that address would determine the destination of the letter. But without one reading the address, the letter would not arrive to the right receiver. The letter also would not be able to reach the intended receiver if there is not medium. This medium would be the courier. And the courier of the computer data is the router.

A router (broadband router) is also a device that enables two or more computer to receive data packets from the Internet under one IP address at the same time.

Remember that to be able to connect to the Internet, a computer must have an IP address unique from the rest of the computers. Therefore, every computer connected to the Internet has it own IP address. It is like having a fingerprint or ID as an access pass to be able to enter the web. With the presence of the router, this “fingerprint” or “ID” could be shared by two or more computer at the same time.

In simplest form, a router makes two or more computer use the Internet at the same with one access pass.

One more thing: a computer with cable modem could also be considered as a router. In this, the computer would do the process of routing like normal routers do. Other computers are then connected to the computer with Internet connection that would give it with the Internet connection. The computer with cable modem has the direct contact with the Internet and the ones connected to it are sharing the connection.

Why would anyone need a router?

For households with two or more computers who would want to have Internet connection to every computers they have, taking subscription for each would be too much. The solution is to buy a router that would enable every computer in the house to have an Internet connection. In the definition above, the broadband router would act as a hub to the existing Internet connection.

If the router is comparable to a hub, would it affect the Internet speed?

It should be taken into consideration that once a single Internet connection is divided, the connection speed is affected. But there are some broadband routers that would bring minimal slowdown to the Internet speed and the effect might not even be big.

Internet speed would also depend on the type of application used in a router. While some would inflict little effect on the speed like online games, others would terribly slowdown your connection and even hinder you to use the Internet at all.

Usually, offices use a more sophisticated router to redirect Internet connections to the large number of computers. These routers would give better data packeting compared to a typical router used at home that results to faster Internet speed.

Why should you take my advice on how to quit your job? Because
I’m a job-quitting expert, and my expertise has been gained
through experience. I’ve quit many jobs in many industries. In
fact, I can think of fifteen jobs that I’ve quit off the top of
my head.

The most recent job I quit was at the Post Office. Don’t let
anyone tell you that you’ll get used to the schedule of a
vampire - you won’t. Now it has been over two years since I’ve
had a job. The real issue of course is, “How to quit your job
and still pay the bills.” Here are some ideas, based on
experience.

Don’t Think Like An Employee

Some employees are afraid of their employers, and feel dependent
on them. Some even feel bitter or “trapped.” But why think that
way? Even if you stay at your present job twenty more years
(there may be good reasons to), why not consider yourself a
business owner, in the business of selling your labor? When you
don’t like the terms or price, you can negotiate a better deal
or go elsewhere.

Working in management in a restaurant years ago, I told my
customer (my employer) I could only work one day, down from
five, because I had other plans for my time. Since they liked my
work, they agreed. What if they hadn’t? There were other jobs -
there are always other opportunities. What if you decide to stay
at a job a while? Fully accept that it is YOUR business
decision, and you’ll have no reason to feel bitter or “trapped.”

When you think of yourself as a business owner, selling your
labor, skills and knowledge, it opens your mind to the
possibilities of better jobs, and even business or investing
activities. This is an advantage of taking this perspective, but
not the best reason to. The best reason is that you will feel
free, and never feel dependent upon another.

Control And Reduce Your Expenses

It’s easier to quit a job if your expenses are lower. It’s not
necessarily a problem of spending, but of having your fixed
expenses too high. Actually, if you can support your basic
lifestyle on virtually any job out there, you can feel free to
live it up when you have a good job. Don’t get into debt, or add
too many financial obligations to your life, and when you quit
that job, you’re not in trouble. Just quickly cut out the excess.

Find a way to reduce the costs in very area of your life, while
maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. For example, if you are
single, consider splitting the rent on an apartment instead of
living alone. Buy foods on sale (only ones that you like) and
you’ll save on food. Turn down the thermostat when you are out.
Group and route your errands to save miles in the car. Finally,
probably the most important thing to do is to avoid consumer
debt.

Money In The Bank

Have six months living expenses in the bank. It is one of the
most important lessons in how to quit your job. Think it can’t
be done? You know there are people living on less income than
you. Live like they do for a while, save the excess, and you’ll
always have a financial “cushion” that allows you to quit a job
when you want. When you have income again, replenish this fund
before you do anything else. In my own life, I’ve rarely worked
full-time jobs. I often took unpaid vacations for as long as
five weeks at a time. I quit working altogether for months at a
time. All of this was possible because I had low expenses, and
money in the bank: freedom.

Other Sources Of Income

I used to rent rooms in my home for $80 per week - two or more
at a time. You can do the math. I paid off the mortgage early,
and lived for free for many years. I loaned money to friends who
bought and sold cars, splitting the profits with them. I made
and sold three hundred walking sticks one summer.

Watch for any opportunities for income. Have a country home?
Collect a few hundred dollars each for boats or RVs to be
seasonally stored on your land. If you have a hobby you enjoy,
find a way to make it pay. Get a part time job just because it
is interesting, but then set aside every penny from it as your
how-to-quit-your-job fund.

Eventually, I decided I’ve had enough jobs. (Maybe one more, if
it’s interesting.) I started this internet business with a few
hundred dollars, and now it pays more than any job I’ve ever
had. My wife likes having me at home every day, and I like
making money telling you how to quit your job.

The framing industry has no books, no set theory, not hard and fast rules on how to pick colours. There are some personal opinions from various writers but that’s all they are. However it is not as hard as you may think.

The obvious starting point is to go for a colour that’s in the picture, then vary the shades from darket to lighter to see which suits best.

An Inner mat is the smaller window just surrounding your art work and it is usually used to sharpen the image. Darker inner mat will increase the contrast between the light and dark areas of the picture, making the image easier to see. Therefore, adding an inner mat is both decorative and functional.

An outer mat is a bigger window closest to the glass, and sitting just on top of the inner mat. There is one or two rules I can give you for choosing the outer mat. Always make the outer mat border at least 2 1/2″ (60mm). 2″ mats do not work. The wider the mat the more you see the picture. The other rule relates to the surroundings. The colour of the outer mat you choose should have NOTHING to do with your taste or the colours in the room. If you do your job correctly you should see the picture, not what surrounds it. Many people make mistake by starting to use their personal taste or decorator themes in framing.

You can practice choosing the right mat board colours using the Smart Framer program on our web site. Upload some of your own digital photos and frame them.

There can be little more satisfying, stimulating or educational for kids and their parents – or grandparents – than creative crafts.

Parents and their kids learn whilst playing, importantly whilst playing together. Minds are expanded and tested (and not just the childrens’). Physical skills like manual dexterity are improved – far more so than by inserting batteries in some walking-talking dinosaur or grappling with the controls on a video game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against technology (he said whilst typing at his computer). The PC is a great learning tool if used properly. Every home should have one. Sadly however, it’s the box in the corner and the latest must-have-but-bored-in-a-week video title. Sit them in front of the TV with “Crash and Burn Fast Deadly Kill III” and they’re occupied and out of harms way.

A shame when creative craft activities can be so easy to start – and, incidentally, are a tiny fraction of the price. There are myriad crafts you can do for next to nothing using things you probably have lying around the house right now. Easy things that don’t take very long to get started but can amuse your kids for ages. OK, you might need to buy a few things but we’re talking pennies here for things like paint and glue, not large amounts.

Let’s look at a few ideas to kick off the creative process. I’m sure, as you read through you’ll think of more yourself to add to and expand these simple crafts. Before we start though, the usual note of caution: Some of these craft ideas require the use of scissors. I probably don’t need to tell you but just for safety’s sake, you should always keep sharp and small objects out of reach of children and never let your children use scissors – even those little round-nosed ones – unless an adult is supervising. If you’re painting, acrylic paints are very child friendly but always read the label to be sure. Never use house paints.

Right, let’s get started. Do you have any paper plates around the house? Perhaps left over from a party? Cut a few holes for eyes and mouth and decorate with pens and paints to create masks. A couple of small holes at the right and left hand edges and you can use elastic or string to hold them on. You can cut shapes out of card or paper and glue them on to the plate to add a hat or a beard – or whatever you can think of.

Paper and card are great sources of crafts for kids. You can make cards for birthdays or other festivals just with paint and pens – or you can cut pictures out of old magazines or newspapers to make a collage. You can decorate a box with cut out pictures in the same way – or start a scrapbook. Maybe your kid is into horses, or cats, or whatever. If you feel they are not old enough to cut the pictures out then you do it for them and let them paste the pictures on.

Then there’s papier maché – a craft that’s been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. Basically this is just small strips of paper and glue (I’ve always used wallpaper paste but check to make sure it’s safe, for a while some contained fungicides which weren’t child-friendly). Flour and water paste is another alternative. We haven’t got space to go into detail here but there are plenty of resources around the web for how to do it if you’re not sure. It’s an absorbing craft for kids and parents alike and a truly creative process. I used to love making money boxes: Blow up a balloon and cover with a few layes of papier maché. When it’s dry, use a pin to burst the baloon. Then cut a slot for the money to go in and cut up an egg-box for feet and a nose. Stick on a couple of paper ears and paint the whoe thing – hours of fun on a rainy day – for pennies. Also look into decoupage – another craft that’s really just paper and glue.

The list could go on and on – and so far we’ve only used paper and card.

I know it’s not always easy to find the time – or the patience – but think of the gift you’ll be giving your children. It’s fun, educational and helps develop life skills. Every once in a while you might discover an abiding hobby, or even something that grows into a career. I know few people who are happier and better adjusted than the craftspeople I come into contact with.

When it comes to a wireless standard, the first thing we all
look at is how fast will this baby run! And you know the
trade-offs, you can spend a lot of money to get the fastest
thing running, or you can back off a little and save a lot.

The good thing about wireless networks is that the price
difference between wireless standards is almost gone. There are
some things that could add up, but I will explain the difference
and why you might want to go that route or not.

Now, let’s get to the different wireless standards you can
choose from.

1. 802.11b - 11Mbit at 2.GHz 2. 802.11a - 54Mbit as 5.0GHz 3.
802.11g - 54Mbit at 2.4GHz 4. Hybrid Systems

When you get ready to purchase your equipment, you will see a
lot of systems saying that they are faster than these standards
listed above. Most will say 108Mbit per second, some 125Mbit per
second and a few even higher. To operate at these speeds usually
requires you to only use their network cards to access their
access points, some of them require a specific card from them to
get that speed. If any other card connects, then they will drop
back to the standard speed and you lose the extra speed you
probably paid extra to get.

What Should You Get

I was purchasing equipment for a completely new wireless setup.
We only had one older wireless computer and I replaced the card
in it with a new one. I did purchase a system that advertised
the 108Mbit speeds since I knew who was going to connect to it.

If you are building a new network setup, I suggest you purchase
a system that will run faster than the standard, but only if you
know who is connecting. If not, then get a system that runs on
the 802.11g standard. The price is about the same as 802.11b but
runs 5 times faster.

The registry is where the computer stores information about the configuration of the system and the programs installed so that the operating system can use them.

Regularly maintaining the registry is a basic requirement. Fixing problems after they occur is harder than preventing them in the first place. Windows registry problems can cause crashes, slow performance and error messages.

If you:

- Install or uninstall software on a regular basis

- have not removed software correctly

- have embedded Spyware or any third party programs that start up again with each boot [whether you installed them or not]

- have installed or uninstalled hardware

- you have drivers on your system that are no longer needed.

Then you absolutely need to be cleaning your windows registry regularly! All the above leave trace elements of themselves behind that build up over time and choke the registry. Think of it as like dusting. Don’t dust and you end up with dust bunnies, allergies and sneezing; you don’t feel well and you slow down… Get the picture?

Back up your registry. Basic rule of thumb in the computing world - Back Up, Back Up, Back Up. System meltdowns and viruses can require the complete reinstalling of windows on your computer, which means you run the risk of losing all your files. Keep them safe. Back them up.

1. Don’t try and edit anything in the registry yourself unless you are completely familiar with it and with the system

2. Programs are available that can be installed and set to fix and reguarly maintain your registry. Search online or drop in to your local computer store.

3. Call in a professional. Ask your friends for a reliable technician or look one up in the Yellow Pages
