Whether we like it or not, we are all living in the Information Age. We have nothing left but adapt to rapidly developing information technology, no matter who we are and what we do for living.

The Internet, in particular, means for us boundless opportunities in life and business – but also lots of dangers unheard of just a decade ago. We should be aware of these dangers if we want to use the huge potential of the Internet and to avoid the hazards it brings us.

Warning: There are Websites You’d Better Not Visit

Phishing websites

Thanks to authors of numerous articles on this topic, “classic” phishing technique is relatively well known. This scam involves setting bogus websites and luring people to visit them, as a rule, by links in emails. Phishing website is disguised to look like a legitimate one — of a bank or a credit card company, and users are invited to provide their identifying information. Sites of this kind are used solely to steal users’ passwords, PIN numbers, SSNs and other confidential information.

At first phishing consisted only of a social engineering scam in which phishers spammed consumer e-mail accounts with letters ostensibly from banks. The more people got aware of the scam, the less spelling mistakes these messages contained, and the more these fraudulent websites resembled legitimate ones. Phishers are getting smarter. They eagerly learn; there is enough money involved here to turn criminals into earnest students.

Keyloggers and Trojans

Since about November 2004 there has been a lot of publications of a scheme which at first was seen as a new kind of phishing. This technique includes contaminating a PC with a Trojan horse program. The problem is that this Trojan contains a keylogger which lurks at the background until the user of the infected PC visits one of the specified websites. Then the keylogger comes to life to do what it was created for — to steal information.

It seems that this technique is actually a separate scam aimed at stealing personal information and such attacks are on the rise. Security vendor Symantec warns about commercialisation of malware — cybercriminals prefer cash to fun, so various kinds of information-stealing software are used more actively.

Fraudulent websites are on the rise

Websense Security Labs — a well-known authority in information security — noticed a dramatic rise in the number of fraudulent websites as far back as in the second half of 2004. These sites pose as ones for e-commerce; they encourage users to apply for a reward or purchase something, of course never delivering the product or paying money. The most popular areas for such fraud are online pharmacies, lottery scams, and loan / mortgage sites. Experts predict there will be more fake merchants in future and their scams will become more sophisticated.

A Hybrid Scam

In April Panda Software warned Internet users of a new particularly brazen scam aimed at stealing confidential information. The technique used here looks like a hybrid between phishing and a fraudulent website.

Panda Software identified several websites offering cheap airline tickets which in fact weren’t selling anything; the aim was to cheat users out of credit card details.

This scam is very simple; the thieves simply wait until some unsuspecting user who is searching for, say, airline ticket offers, finds their site offering dirt-cheap airline tickets. Really pleased with himself and looking forward to the trip, the user fills in the form, entering his credit card number, expiry date and verification value (CVV).

As soon as these details have been entered, an error page appears; it tells the user that the transaction has been unsuccessful, and offers instructions on how to pay for the ticket by postal money order. So the user may well be fooled twice. He loses his credit card details, putting them right into the hands of cyber-crooks, and then loses money, if decides to buy the ticket by money order.

Of course, these sites have already been disabled, but who knows whether (or better to say when) other ones will appear again, this time offering all kinds of products.

Malicious websites are especially dangerous. Cybercriminals create them exclusively to execute malicious code on the visitors’ computers. Sometimes hackers infect legitimate sites with malicious code.

Bad news for blog readers: blogs can be contaminated, too. Since January, Websense Security Labs has discovered hundreds of these “toxic” blogs set by hackers.

When unsuspecting users visit malicious sites, various nasty applications are downloaded and executed on their computers. Unfortunately, more and more often these applications contain keyloggers–software programs for intercepting data.

Keyloggers, as it is clear from the name of the program, log keystrokes –but that’s not all. They capture everything the user is doing — keystrokes, mouse clicks, files opened and closed, sites visited. A little more sophisticated programs of this kind also capture text from windows and make screenshots (record everything displayed on the screen) – so the information is captured even if the user doesn’t type anything, just opens the views the file.

In February and March 2005, Websense Security Labs researched and identified about 8-10 new keylogger variants and more than 100 malicious websites which are hosting these keyloggers EACH WEEK. From November of 2004 through December 2004 these figures were much smaller: 1-2 new keylogger variants and 10-15 new malicious websites per week. There is by all means a disturbing tendency–the number of brand-new keyloggers and malicious website is growing, and growing rapidly.

What a user can do to avoid these sites?

As for phishing, the best advice is not to click any links in any email, especially if it claims to be from a bank.

Opening an attachment of a spam message can also trigger the execution of malicious program, for example a keylogger or a keylogger-containing Trojan horse.

As for fraudulent websites, maybe buying goods only from trusted vendors will help — even if it is a bit more expensive.

As for malicious websites… “Malicious websites that host adult entertainment and shopping content can exploit Internet Explorer vulnerabilities to run code remotely without user interaction.”(a quote from the Websense’s report). What can a user do about it? Not much, but avoiding adult sites and buying only from known and trusted online stores will reduce the risk.

Hackers also attract traffic to malicious websites by sending a link through spam or spim (the analog of spam for instant messaging (IM). So a good advice never follow links in spam is worth remembering once more.

Alexandra Gamanenko currently works at Raytown Corporation, LLC — an independent software developing company. The company’s R&D department created an innovative technology, which disables the very processes of information capturing — keylogging, screenshoting, etc. It makes the company’s anti-keylogging software truly unique: it doesn’t detect keyloggers or information-stealing Trojans one by one — they all simply can’t work.

A surge protector [AKA surge suppressor] is an electrical plug-in device designed to distribute safe electrical voltages to other electrical or electronic devices. Surge protectors resemble power strips in appearance; however, they are more sophisticated and deliver a constant, continuous power supply.

In addition to connecting multiple devices to a single power source, surge protectors provide protection from frequent problems that plague conventional utility power. The most common of these problems are surges (temporary increase of voltage) and brownouts (temporary decrease of voltage). These disturbances slowly degrade many power supply units and cause premature equipment failure. The rising demand on our nation’s power grids is causing more brownouts than ever before (Gamble; Power Protect Your Computer).

The Inside of a Surge Protector

Toroidal Choke Coil: The toroidal choke coil is an electromagnet wrapped in wire. It filters out line noise as the hot wire passes through it.

Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV’s): An MOV has three parts: a piece of metal oxide material in the middle and two semiconductors joined to the hot and ground wire. As a protective connecting unit it shifts unsafe voltage levels to the ground wire.

Neutral Wire: The neutral wire is common in modern wiring practices for safety. It is used in conjunction with the hot wire and the ground wire.

Hot Wire: The hot wire holds the passing current which contains excess voltage.

Fuse: A fuse is a resistor used to protect the wiring from getting too hot. Fuses “blow or burn out”, thereby preventing the electrical current from traveling further.

Ground Wire: The ground wire protects users from getting an electrical shock. It receives excess voltage from from the MOVs.
Most surge protectors contain a parallel circuit design whereby the extra voltage is fed away from the standard path to another circuit. Another design is a series circuit where the electrical current is slowed; moreover it detects high voltage, stores the electricity, and releases it gradually (Harris).

The majority of the electrical currents diversion is done through the metal oxide varistor or MOV. The MOV acts as a pressure-sensitive valve: based on the level of voltage, the electrons in the semiconductors behave differently either creating lower or higher resistance. When the voltage is correct, an MOV doesn’t do anything (Harris).

Specifications and Quality Considerations

Energy Absorption: Surge processors are measured in joules (the amount of energy they can absorb). The higher the number, the better the protection: 200 joules provides basic protection, 400 is good and 600 or high is superior protection.

UL1449: Standard rated by Underwriters Laboratories as the minimum protection standards for surge protectors. It rates suppressors by the amount of voltage passage they allow.

Protection Indicator: LED indicator as to metal-oxide varistors functioning. MOVs do not last forever – one lightening strike can fry them out.

Line Conditioning: Most surge protectors contain this feature. It filters out line noise using a toroidal choke coil to “condition” the current.

Power Switch: There are manual on/off power switches as well as circuit switches. Circuit switches are useful for keeping some components running while others are shut off.

Circuit Breaker or Fuse: A fuse is a resistor that can conduct current below a certain level. If the current is higher than acceptable, heat burns the fuse and cuts off the circuit. Breakers are more economical than fuses as they do not have to be replaced.

Protection Guarantee: Read the terms and conditions carefully! It is important to understand your consumer rights in the event of damage to devices your surge protector neglects to protect (Kozierok).

According to data published on Hewlett Packard’s website, recent statistics reveal 63 percent of all electronics casualties are the result of a power related problem. Most affected are devices using computer chips and high-speed microprocessors. Unprotected computers can suffer hardware degradation and extensive damage when exposed to power surges (Power Protect Your Computer).

The cost of a surge protector varies greatly depending on user needs. Basic models sell for as low as $10 but one should be cautious as to the capabilities these units offer.

NOTE: It is important to connect all peripheral equipment to the surge protector for complete protection. This includes phone jacks, modems, cables, and any other external devices that will receive electrical current.

There is so much variety available in fabric shops, on-line, and in mail-order catalogs that it’s almost difficult to choose. Often, I end up buying fabric whether I need it right now or not. After all, a quilter must always have fabric on hand.

The “magic” comes when you find a fabric that you fall in love with. Finding a suitable fabric usually isn’t difficult for a project you’re working on. Settling on just one fabric is the hard part.

Here are some criteria to keep in mind when making fabric selections: colorfast quality; fiber content; surface design. If you stick to some guidelines about these criteria, then you’re sure to be pleased with the final result of your project.

Surface Design:

The printed or woven surface design and, of course, the color, is very important.

1) Try to pick fabrics with the same color value so one doesn’t stand out in the finished quilt.

2)Check to see if there is a one-way direction in the design; you may need to purchase extra fabric to allow for cutting fabrics with plaids or stripes.

3) The size of the design and the background spaces are also important considerations. Are the designs large, medium, or small? Is the background area prominent? How will this particular fabric look when cut it into small quilt pieces? If the design is too widely spaced, it may be lost in the cutting of the fabric.

Take a few minutes to analyze fabric and keep these questions in mind when purchasing fabric. It is far better to have left over fabric than be working on a project and run out of material. I’ve run out before only to find that the fabric is no longer in stock.

Colorfast Quality:

Avoid fabrics that fade. Pigment-dyed fabric resists light 40 hours. Wet-printed resists light 20 hours. The best thing to avoid having your quilt fade is to keep it out of direct sunlight.

Fiber Content:

The fiber content is especially important when purchasing fabric for quilts. The way fabric responds to manipulation is determined by the fiber content. The standard 100% cotton fabric sold for quilting is easy to work with and this is the best choice.

Cotton blends are harder to work with; they tend to shift while cutting or sewing them. 100% cotton is strong when wet, absorbs moisture, creases easily, irons nicely at high temperatures and wears well.

Beware of Discount Fabric:

For a good finished product, quilters need to purchase good-quality, colorfast cotton fabric from a reputable supplier. I’ve bought fabric from discount stores because I liked the print. Then I had trouble manipulating the material; it would shift and bunch as I sewed it.

The finished product usually reflected the problems I encountered while sewing. No matter how much money I saved on material, my time was wasted by producing a less than satisfactory quilt.

In order to be happy with your finished product, I recommend that you buy what appeals to you… as long as it is good-quality, colorfast cotton fabric that is treated with finishes to control shrinkage, resist soil, and resist wrinkling.

Approximately 1 billion units of computer equipment will become potential scrap by 2010 according to the International Association of Electronics Recyclers. Is now the time for your company to decide how to deal with outdated computer equipment that is currently stockpiled in empty offices and closets? Outsourcing this responsibility to an expert can simplify the process and ensure safe disposal of the equipment. However, an ill-conceived asset retirement program may expose your company to potential data security risk and environmental liability.

With careful planning and the right partner, you can save time and resources, while mitigating privacy risks and environmental liabilities specific to your industry. LifeSpan Technology Recycling has extensive nationwide experience in managing the asset retirement programs for small, medium, and enterprise businesses.

When selecting an asset retirement partner, it is important to work through the following five steps:

1) Evaluate Your Existing Asset Retirement Process and Goals

Decide what issues are the most critical to your company, including what has and has not worked in the past. Which objectives are most important to your organization?

Environmental compliance

Data security

Reliability and logistics

Auditing and reporting

Compliance with internal policies

Cost

Think through the ramifications for your corporate strategy beyond the immediate project needs. The vendors that you consider should carefully assess your needs in order to co-develop strategies that fit your corporate structure and objectives.

If you don’t have accurate and up-to-date records of your technology assets, your first step will be to conduct an on-site inventory. Next, you’ll need to consider the various disposition options and the costs associated with each.

Enterprises can no longer count on selling off their used assets at a profit because most technology rapidly decreases in value. Be aware that reselling is not a simple process. If you do decide to resell, you’ll need to be able to track the equipment and obtain proof that hard drives have been completely erased. The cost of logistics may also outweigh a meaningful investment recovery. Recycling may therefore be your best alternative. Other forms of disposition worth considering include: internal redeployment, sales to employees, and charitable donations.

In evaluating which options are best for your company, you should weigh the labor required and the risk factors associated with each approach. Cost estimates for outsourced asset retirement programs can vary widely– be sure to include retirement costs and downstream liability into your overall cost calculation. In addition, you should assess the cost of your own internal labor and expenses associated with managing the logistics of equipment removal and disposal.

2) Conduct Due Diligence On Potential Vendors

Electronics recycling is a rapidly changing and growing global industry. Beware of vendors who promise to take your equipment for little or no cost. If they claim to offer “free” asset retirement, how likely are they to comply with complex environmental protection and data privacy regulations? If your equipment is improperly disposed of, it may come back to haunt you in the form of fines, clean-up costs, and negative publicity.

Other factors to consider in assessing potential vendors include:

De-manufacturing process and capabilities

Environmental compliance record

Data security safeguards

Operational processes – are they well documented?

Is there a robust audit trail?

Shipping capabilities and processing locations – can they accommodate the location(s) of your equipment?

Insurance coverage

Be sure to check references and examine the vendor’s experience with other firms in your industry. Do they have a history of long-term relationships, or just a series of one-time projects? Consider a site visit to inspect their processing facilities and see first hand how they deal with materials. Finally, find out what level of support your organization will be expected to provide.

3) Consider Methods and Risks of Data Destruction

Proper data destruction is critical in order to avoid industrial espionage, lawsuits, and/or government penalties resulting from improper disclosure of confidential information in violation FACTA (the Fair and Accurate Credits Transactions Act) and other laws. All asset retirement vendors should possess a baseline capability of data destruction that meets Department of Defense 5220.M standards. In addition, health care and financial services enterprises must comply with various federal laws that impose significant additional data security safeguards. These regulations include HIPAA (the “Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act”) and GLB (the “Gramm-Leach Bliley Act”).

Questions to consider:

What is the vendor’s data destruction process?

What are the various options available (e.g. software vs. physical destruction)?

What kind of quality control mechanisms does the vendor maintain in order to ensure that the data is actually destroyed. Do they undertake a sampling process and/or disk inspections via computer forensics?

What kind of on-site security systems are in place at their facilities in order to ensure protection of your equipment?

Does the vendor maintain an errors and omissions insurance policy in the event that some of your data is accidentally disclosed?

4) Evaluate Environmental Stewardship and OSHA Compliance

Is the vendor committed to complying with your company’s environmental policies as well as industry, state and local regulations? Environmental regulations vary widely from state to state. Does the vendor maintain a library of up-to-date summaries of these regulations that are available for your review? Do they employ a full-time Environmental Director and dedicated operations team who will closely monitor your asset retirement program? Are they registered with the EPA and are they able to provide you with a registration number? Are they approved as collectors or processors by the state in order to participate in government-supported programs?

Lastly, confirm that the vendor has the appropriate facility permits such as storm water and air quality approvals. Also, find out what testing they perform on their employees for exposure to lead and other hazardous materials.

5) Assess Reporting and Tracking Capabilities

There is more to reporting and tracking than issuing certificates of destruction. Anyone with a laser print can create a “recycling certificate.” Certificates provide no protection if the vendor is disposing of your company’s assets improperly. Vendors should be prepared to provide you with detailed tracking reports, Bills of Lading, and inventory documentation in order to prove that the assets were properly transferred and disposed of.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (“CERCLA” - commonly known as the “Superfund law”) gives the EPA the power to impose fines and to hold your organization responsible for remediation costs - regardless of whether title to the assets in question was transferred to a third party. Make sure that you thoroughly investigate a potential asset retirement vendor’s compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental laws in order to minimize potential liability.

What kind of documentation does the vendor maintain concerning its internal Environmental Management Program or “EMP”?

Does the vendor have a well-documented operational process and maintain strict internal controls in order to ensure that all materials are handled and disposed of properly?

Conclusion

In the final analysis, you need to select an asset retirement partner that you can trust in order to mitigate risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and enable your organization to focus on its core competencies. LifeSpan Technology Recycling handles the full range of “end of life” issues - leaving you with peace of mind.

Now that you’ve granted yourself permission to scrapbooking journaling from your heart, what’s the next step?

Have you ever sat down and thought about what really matters to you, while you were looking at a photo and holding a pen in your hands?

For me, stuff that counts is normally ordinary, non-spectacular daily happenings. Yet such important stuff got lost in the midst of my struggle to keep my recordings straight for legacy reasons. I admit that I got so engrossed with recalling facts and figures at times, that I missed out on the more important aspect of journaling.

It happens.

Give me a minute and let me see what I cherish.

Oh, the warmth and love I feel in my heart when I drink from the chicken soup lovingly prepared by my mom.

The innocent giggles on my baby niece’s face when she responds to my endless chatter and silly faces to make her laughs.

The silly blend of humor my sister and I share, and the fact that she gets it while others don’t quite understand what’s so funny about the situation.

The unwavering support and cheers of my best friend whenever I jump into another project, again.

What about you? What do you cherish?

In your scrapbooking journaling, have you remembered to write down the thousands of hopes and fears you hold for your three beautiful kids?

Have you described the loving act of your husband as he tucks your kids into bed each night, and how thankful you feel to have such a beautiful man in your life?

Have you journal about the weekly calls to your friend from your quilting club to remind you that besides being a stay-at-home mom, you are someone’s friend too?

Have you make efforts to write down in your scrapbooking journaling the things that might not come attached with photos, but nevertheless mean the world to you?

Or have you allowed the worries of exposing yourself to the world stopped you short from scrapbooking journaling from your heart? Are you worried that others might laugh at what you’ve written down in those journaling boxes?

I don’t think anyone will be laughing. And if they are, it’ll be laughter of joys. They’ll be gripped with emotions as they read through your thoughtful journaling, painting word pictures in their mind.

Right at this moment, consider bringing your heart to your journaling. Bring your unique perspectives to those pages and make your journaling comes alive with emotions and feelings.

You need to hear your own heart speaking in your scrapbook albums.

Your kids and family need to hear those heartfelt words of yours too.

So you want to make a collage or perhaps you are interested in creating a unique shadow box to hold your valuable photographs and memorabilia. No problem! Whether you want to create lasting memories using cheap picture frames, discount picture frames or even wholesale picture frames, here are some pointers for creating lasting memories right the first time every time.

Collage Picture Frames

Collage picture frames are useful for creating lasting memories of a moment in time. Whether you want to create a lasting imprint of your wedding day, vacation or graduation, collages are the best way to go. Here are some steps to follow to make sure you create a collage you are pleased with:

  1. Decide where you want your collage. Make sure you measure the space you have available for your frame. You don’t want to buy a frame that is too small or large for the space.
  2. Select the photographs you want to use for your collage. Remember they should vary in size and shape.
  3. Review the types of collage picture frames available. Look for one that allows one or two large photographs and several small ones. Alternatively you may select a collage with three or four cutouts of equal size and shape.
  4. Lay out your pictures according to size. Measure them against the frame you have available. Crop any pictures you need to so they fit correctly in the frame.
  5. Now measure the wall space to decide where exactly you want your collage. Measure the corners of the frame from the ends of the wall so you can line up your frame evenly.
  6. If using a lighter frame, nail wall hooks into the wall based on your measurements. If hanging a heavy frame, use nails to hang your frame.
  7. Hang your picture!

Remember when making a collage the texture, color and feel of the background paint are just as important as the picture itself. You might consider painting the wall you plan to hang your collage on. Alternatively you may select a frame color and style that matches the current wall surface.

Shadow Box Tips

The most important consideration when setting up a shadow box is deciding the right frame to complement the items you plan to frame. Shadow boxes come in a couple of different varieties. Some have shallow frames. These are usually good for displaying coin collections or award ribbons. Most of these are only up to 1/2 inch deep.

Traditional shadow boxes are about 4 inches deep. You can place virtually any item in these boxes. They help set off the object inside creating a more intense and three-dimensional image. When setting your image in a shadow box, you should use double sided tape or glue to keep the object in its place. If you plan to place a heavy object in a shadow box, you can use a substance called epoxy or caulking. Usually if you do this you will have to let the object dry for several hours.

Occasionally you may be able to sew the object you want to display into the back of your shadow box. This is the case with a baseball for example. You can also buy some Velcro to attach soft articles to your shadow box. Remember shadow boxes are often used for hanging or displaying objects other than pictures. You can still put your favorite photos in them with a little double-sided tape. Wedding and baby memorabilia look amazing arranged in these multi purpose boxes.

As with any picture frame, you should take time to measure the items you want to display. This will help you decide the right style and size of shadow box. If you want to display thick objects be sure you get a traditional style box rather than a shallow one. As with any decorating, be sure you have your picture framing supplies handy before mounting any pictures.

You don’t have to hang shadow boxes for them to look great. Most shadow boxes rest easily on a nightstand, in a display case or on a hutch or available counter. Consider buying one or two shadow boxes to complement other decorative pieces in your home like digital picture frames or magnetic picture frames. The biggest mistake people make is trying to cram too many objects in their displays. When it comes to making a shadow box, less is usually better!

Six months ago my computer crashed. When I turned my computer on it would not load Windows XP and so I could not get into my two hard drive files. As an author and writer of ebooks, I had all my files in two hard drives without any other backup. At first, I panic. The thought of losing all my data files and writings was unthinkable. Then I got angry with myself for letting myself get into this situation.

Have you ever felt the terror, fear, and then anger connected with losing data that you value so much? I started to think about the different ways I could try to get my data. After trying different things, I knew I could not recover my data by myself. I finally gave in and knew that I need help.

I thought about pulling the hard drives out or taking my computer to a data recovery service. As I looked in the yellow pages and through goggle search for local data recovery computer services, I was able to find a few. I knew it was going to cost me a few dollars, but I needed my data and I needed my computer to do my work.

Finally, I decided to call a computer friend of mine that had done some work for me in the past. After he tried what he could with his knowledge, he could not get windows to open. So here is what we decided was the best course of action:

* Buy a new 120-megabyte hard drive

* Format and install Windows XP on the new hard drive on another computer.

* Remove one hard drive C from old computer and install new hard drive on old computer

* Copy files from drive D that was left on old computer onto new hard drive

* Remove drive D old computer and install drive C

Job complete. With the new hard drive now call drive G, I now had drive C with all my old data and drive D with my old data.

There would have been many other ways to configure and transfer old hard drive data but this one worked for me and I was happy because I could access my files.

Cost was $150 for my friend and $100 for 120 MB hard drive and about a week of lost productivity.

I don’t know what cause my computer to fail but I could have been a virus. If your computer crashes, can you afford to be a week without your data? As an individual, maybe you can fix it yourself or with the help of a computer expert. For a company computer you will need the help of a data recovery service if you don’t have a resident IT person.

Most of us learned that similes were comparisons using the words “like” or “as” by second or third grade, so that’s all we’ll say on that section of our imagery toolbox.

Unless you’ve studied poetry or writing further, you may not be as familiar with the metaphor or poetry thread (aka extended metaphor).

Metaphor

In life, as in baseball, we must leave the dugout of complacency, step up to the home plate of opportunity, adjust the protective groin cup of caution and swing the bat of hope at the curve ball of fate, hoping that we can hit a line drive of success past the shortstop of misfortune, then sprint down the base path of chance, knowing that at any moment we may pull the hamstring muscle of inadequacy and fall face-first onto the field of failure, where the chinch bugs of broken dreams will crawl into our nose.

– Dave Barry

Above is a quote overflowing with metaphor. Even though he goes overboard for comedic effect, they are all fine examples of what a metaphor is.

Perfecting your use of metaphor is essential to writing in general, but in creating poetry it is imperative. A creative metaphor in a poem makes it sing like the angels and a poor one, or none at, all could have your poem falling flat and off key.

Example:

In life, as in baseball, we must leave the dugout of complacency (Dave Barry)

OR

You can’t stay in the dugout – even though it’s nice and you’re happy there

Why use a metaphor, why not just say it like it is?

Well you could, and that might be your personal writing style, but a metaphor takes your reader on a tantalizing journey, riding your words as if they’re on the Orient Express. With it, you offer a bountiful feast for the eyes and the imagination rather than having a grilled cheese in a closet. Most readers enjoy using their minds like a tongue – wrapping it around your poem relishing the exploration in the taste of it all.

Weave a Deeper Meaning With Poetry Threads

A poetry thread, also known as an extended metaphor, takes a single metaphor and stretches it through a large section of, or the entire poem.

Imagine your poem is a quilt. Each square of fabric is a word and the stitches that hold them all together are your extended metaphor. This thread gently tugs your reader along through your piece and creates a deeper meaning and a more vivid picture within their mind

Start with a simple metaphor, let’s go with your puppy is a vehicle. Now here is an example of extending that metaphor:

My puppy is a car
that drives me quite insane.
When I’m ready for the parking garage
He’s revving for a freeway lane.

His engines roar whenever
he wants to go for a romp.
He races right on over me
before I can holler, “STOP!”

Notice how I’ve taken the metaphor and expanded on it? I’ve taken elements of driving (i.e. Parking garage, revving, engines, races, and freeway lane) and show the reader how on earth my puppy is a car.

I’ve used a silly example because they’re fun, but it works equally well in more serious poetry or even essays, fiction and more.

Whether you wrap your reader in a comforter, family heirloom quilt or itchy wool blanket, you’ve given them another dimension with which to embrace your work.

I watched as the razor-sharp knife of the skilled surgeon performed the delicate, life-saving task of repairing an aneurism in the elderly man’s stomach. I had a close-up view from a stool beside the operating table.

At that time several years ago, I shared an office building with this surgeon and his partners. He had finally said “yes” to my request to “let me watch one day.” I knew it would be interesting, but I didn’t know that I’d be blessed with a very graphic life lesson in that operating room. I’ll spare you most of the very gory details. I had only been used to “verbal gore,” not red stuff. Thank God there are those who are called to be surgeons–I’m not!

Anyway, back to the Operating Room. The task was to cut out the aneurism and replace it with a synthetic graft. The doctor had located the aneurism, had clamped off the arteries, and had begun to remove the crud (medical term, I’m sure) from the affected section of artery. I was amazed at the amount of stuff (another medical term) that he piled into the container. This HAD to be life threatening. The blood is the life flow of the body. If it can’t flow where it’s needed, the person can’t live. At that moment, dressed in my surgery garb and totally grossed out, a powerful insight flashed into my spirit. This blockage is a lot like bitterness. Something negative happens in your life, and little by little, its poison accumulates, blocking the flow of life energy. Before my eyes was a living metaphor for BITTERNESS. Think through it with me.

CUMULATIVE CHOICES CREATE CUMULATIVE HARM.

That patient had made lifestyle choices that resulted in an accumulation of unhealthy material in the critical arteries that sustained his life.

The bitter person also makes choices–dwelling on the offense, mentally (or physically) performing little acts of revenge, refusing to forgive. The poison accumulates.

THE PROBLEM GROWS, AND ITS IMPACT SPREADS.

From a physical standpoint, the blood flow is critical. Block its flow to the heart or other vital organs and you have a catastrophic impact.

Each person has a similar flow of emotional and spiritual energy. The consequences of a blockage in these life-giving channels are just as tragic as an aneurism can be. The problem grows and its impact spreads.

Imagine that you released a drop of red food coloring into a beaker of water. At first you’d see a red dot. Soon you’d see pink water. Like the drop of food coloring, anger that is nurtured grows and deepens. It begins to affect every “system”–relationships, attitudes, motivation, and productivity.

DRAMATIC INTERVENTION IS NECESSARY TO SAVE A LIFE.

Thankfully, under the care of this experienced and competent surgeon, the patient got a chance to live an estimated 20 to 30 years longer. He would be freer to do the things that he enjoyed. Yes, there would be a painful period of recovery from this major surgery, but it was worth it.

You may or may not need professional help to release yourself from the bitterness you’ve harbored. Notice I said release YOURSELF, not release the other person(s). They are going on their merry way. (Of course, this can make you madder.)

I’ve had clients tell me, “If I forgive, that person will go scott-free.” News flash! The other person(s) are already out there ppursuing their life interests. It’s YOU who is suffering for holding onto bitterness. It you whose irritability and short fuse is robbing you of peace in relationships you value. It’s you whose physical health is deteriorating because of anger. It’s you whose sleep is disturbed and whose positive energy is sapped. It’s you whose creativity is stifled and whose productivity is diminished.

In the next article, I’ll share with you some “how-to’s” on FORGIVING to RELEASE YOURSELF. Stay tuned!
