Using SQL Server 2000 and above versions you can retrieve data from SQL Server in XML format directly from the database. Many XML related features were incorporated in the SQL Server database. This enables the development of XML enabled applications very easy and it makes exchange of data over internet easy. In this article we will discuss about how to use SQLXML to retrieve data directly from SQL server database in XML format.

There are some SQL commands and clauses that help you to retrieve data from the SQL Server in the XML format. Syntax for such is given below:

SELECT … FOR XML mode [, XMLDATA] [, ELEMENTS] [, BINARY BASE64]

There are different modes and that take the values of

· AUTO – In this mode every row of the result of the query forms an element in the returned XML document.

· EXPLICIT – This mode defines how to map the columns of the results returned by the query to the XML elements and the attributes.

· RAW - All the fields of the result are identified as attributes of an element.

· NESTED – The result of this mode is the same as the AUTO mode but the formatting has to be done at the client side.

A simple example of using the above syntax is given below:

SELECT TOP 3 *
FROM (SELECT FirstName+’ ‘+LastName as Name FROM Employees)
FOR XML AUTO

The query produces this result:

Employees Name=”John Peter”
Employees Name=”Andrew Dixon”
Employees Name=”Tom Hanks”

There are optional parameters in the ‘FOR XML mode’ clause. The XMLDATA option adds an XSD schema which describes the XML format of the result returned. The ELEMENTS options make the fields of the tables in the database to be returned as child elements. If the ELEMENTS option is not there the fields of the tables are returned as attributes instead of child elements of the XML document. The ELEMENTS option is allowed only in the AUTO mode. The BINARY BASE64 option is used to retrieve any binary data. The returned binary data is returned in BASE64 encoded format. The binary data can be retrieved in the RAW or EXPLICIT mode.

An example of the RAW mode is given below:

SELECT EmpName, EmpCity from EMP for XML RAW

The above code returns a result like,

row EmpName=”John” EmpCity=”New York”

In the above result you can note that the fields of the resultset are returned as attributes of the element.

.Net provides with managed classes for interacting with SQL Server. The managed classes of SQLXML provided by .Net are:

· SqlXmlCommand – This is used to perform queries that are stored in XML documents which are also called XML templates. This class also provides support for client side XML processing.

· SqlXmlParameter – this is used to provide parameterized values and is used along with SqlXmlCommand object.

· SqlXmlAdapter – this is the adapter class for SQLXML provider. This is used to fill the dataset.

· SqlXmlException – this is used to trap the error information from the SQL Server.

A sample code using the managed classes is given below. For detailed information on the usage of the above managed classes you can refer to the MSDN documentation.

static string cstr = “Provider=SQLOLEDB;Server=(local);database=EmpPersonal;”;
public static void testingSqlXml ()
{

Stream oStr = Console.OpenStandardOutput();

SqlXmlCommand sqlcmd = new SqlXmlCommand(cstr);

sqlcmd.Root = “Employees”;

sqlcmd.CommandType = SqlXmlCommandType.Sql;

sqlcmd.CommandText = “SELECT EmpName, EmpCity FROM Employees FOR XML AUTO”;

strm = sqlcmd.ExecuteToStream(oStr);

oStr.Close();
}

Thus we have seen that SQLXML can be used to retrieve data directly from the SQL Server in XML format. It is easy to handle and transmit data through the internet if it is in the XML format and this can be easily achieved using the SQLXML.

Last week at the coffee shop I met my friend Susie; a woman who some years back could barely operate the VCR and the remote control on her TV. But, my friend’s come a long ways. Now, instead of being a customer service representative for the phone company, she has her own business fixing up houses before owners put them on the market for sale. The business is doing quite well too. Our of a sheer necessity to keep in touch with her clients and manage all the appointments Susie confessed to me over a double latte that she went “techno”, she had to, and even worse for her to admit she liked it. In fact, Susie bragged so much about using the PDA with her cell phone, that at first I thought she meant the other kind of PDA, the one known as a public display of affection. Of course when I teased Susie about that, she admonished me and told me to get my mind out of the gutter.

Susie explained how fast cable surfing was and again I thought she meant something else other than technical version, so I launched into a story about body surfing and winding up stuck in some rip tide and getting so tired my arms and legs felt like they’d gone swimming in a washing machine. Of course Susie laughed and the little dimple on the side of her cheek flared, then she got this serious look on her face and said, “I mean my PDA talks to my Cell Phone.”

“Oh,” I feigned dumb, “What do you mean,” curious if she really knew what she was talking about, but she did.

Susie told me with her Pocket PC she could surf the net at broadband speeds and that it is all possible because of a small cable attached to her cell phone. Using the web browser she checks out movie listings, the weather, road conditions, restaurants and more. I tried to do the same thing on my own cell phone, but the web pages took to long to load and I lost patience.

She mentioned how she went to the website Gomadic (www.gomadic.com) and ordered their Wireless Internet Cable, which matched her LG5350 cell phone to her HP iPAQ 5555 Pocket PC and spent all of $39.95, plus $9.95 for an Add-on Laptop Adapter, which is less than Susie, spends on her monthly mocha latte allotment. Susie liked the fact that Gomadic offers a lifetime warranty on their products and offers a cable exchange program. Plus, if you end up getting a new cell phone or a Pocket PC and require a different cable, all that’s required is for you to ship back the old cable and Gomadic will send you a new cable for free. Susie said, “They believe in service and for them it’s not some dying dinosaur.” That’s my gal, always one to spin the sarcasm yarn when it’s well deserved.

I asked Susie how tough it was to hook up and she snapped her fingers. I said, “That quick”, and she said, “Yep”. She explained how the Wireless Internet Cable is comprised of three components: a cable connecting to the cell phone, a different cable that connects the Pocket PC, and what’s known as the patented “ComQube” adapter, which connects the two cables. Instead of creating one cable for each possible Pocket PC/cell phone combination Gomadic uses the ComQube technology to create an interchangeable cable system.

A benefit, which I told Susie which she didn’t know is that Gomadic cables do not require the installation of additional software drivers in order to work. Of course, I’m the “techo guy” as Susie calls me and I did test it out; Gomadic’s cable worked just fine on an HP iPAQ h5555 Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003, an iPAQ h5455 running Pocket PC 2002, a Sony PCG-SRX77P laptop PC running Windows XP Professional, and a dell Inspirion 8000 laptop running Windows 2000 Professional.

“The thing to remember,” Susie said while sipping the last of her mocha latte which she said in a serious tone, “Is that all your devices have to be configured properly.” I laughed and she asked, “What’s so funny?” I told her I love it when she talks techie, that’s its real sexy.” Susie rolled her and said, “Enough lattes for you buddy.”

Why Russian Women?

So…what makes these women so special?

This is a question that I am often asked by men new to the world of international dating. Those guys fortunate enough to have met or visited the Former Soviet Union (FSU) already know the answer!

The first thing is that these women still have “traditional” values. Now this phrase probably means something a little different to everyone who hears it. So let’s qualify this a bit. A FSU woman will want to have children and a family. Yes, she will want to be a wife and mother. Many will be totally happy in these roles alone. Some will like to work outside the home as well.

By and large these women know how to be a wife and mother! The whole Russian culture teaches that a woman finds her highest fulfillment and joy in being a wife and mother. They learn these skills from their mother’s at a young age.

Most women in the FSU have a college degree or are working on one. Many have knowledge (at least to a degree) of a 2nd or 3rd language. These ladies are very well educated.

She will pride herself on her appearance. I do not mean to say that she is stuck up or anything like that. However, she will dress as nicely as she can afford, wear her make-up, and generally present herself as appealing. This is how they are taught to attract a man. Again, very traditional. She usually walks 1-2 miles a day, staying very fit and healthy. How many times have you seen an overweight American woman going to the store or mall in her big bulky sweat pants, looking disheveled, as if she just rolled out of bed? An FSU woman will NEVER let this happen to herself! Many of my friends were amazed at the amount of resentment their wives raised from other women. They were jealous! Also, the FSU woman will tend to you. She will not let you go out of the house without a pressed shirt, nice pants, and polished shoes. This is their culture. And I for one love it! I think most men would enjoy being with a woman who feels this way.

After nearly 80 years of Communist rule, the FSU has some of the most adaptable people anywhere in the world. These ladies, for the most part, know about living in a poor economy. They know how to make something out of nothing. They are not afraid of difficulties. In the West we tend to emphasize the outer things—money, possessions, etc… In the FSU, they more highly value the person. Friendship and inner beauty are very important to most FSU women. She will love you for who you are. In the end, isn’t this what every man really wants?

Compare this attitude to that of the average American woman. Many women in America today do not wish to be a wife and mother. They want to focus more on having a business career, or are mor einterested in dominating their partner. And how many American women have you seen out in public who look like they just woke up? Dressed in baggy sweats, hair not fixed, no make up, not even any attempt at all to make themselves presentable! Not to mention the fact that at least 25% of all American women are technically considered obese! There simply is no comparison between the vast majority of American women and the vast majority of women from the FSU! If you want to be happy for the rest of your life and married to a beautiful, intelligent woman who will value you, your family and herself then go out and find her…in Russia.

You can find what your heart truly desires in the FSU! I can help you find it.

Collecting in the US has spread out to so many areas that it can be difficult to keep focus on creating a great collection. And anybody who is on the internet knows ANY piece is available somewhere and many times, EVERYWHERE. Cross-collectibles have shown up in every venue, as well. If you collect say, Teddy Bears, you could have a wall full of stuffed bears…or a wall of Coca-Cola® Bears, or whimsical porcelain bears or sports team bears or realistic bears or bears with tails or bears with only beer logos. These have some sort of focus. But, problems can arise when the collection of bears includes, Coca-Cola®, Pepsi-Cola®, McDonalds®, Baseball, Football, Automobile, Tractor, Bride & Groom, Real Fur, Plastic and Live Bears!! All this does, is fill up your personal space.

The choices have become so numerous in collectible product lines that it can break the bank in no time. When I was young, I collected old colorful glass bottles/ivy starters in the shape of a violin (called Viobots) and what a Nice Hunt you can have when you are looking for a specific type of item. Collecting today has become a “how can I fill a cabinet” type of marketplace. I also speak, of course, about the “new” Made to be Collectible Product Lines. They can all be of different quality and very diverse in theme. Just as a monstrous example, look at Department 56®, which has dozens of great lines and types of collectibles. Department 56® can be wonderful if the collection is carefully thought out instead of buying what’s new this week or what’s to be retired next month.

The best collections, in my opinion, are the ones that are old or brand new that have a planned direction from the start. Before starting to own more than three of anything (the definition of a collection), why not say “What do I LOVE in this Collectible Line?” If the answer is “not much”, choose another that has lots of things you love, allowing you to choose carefully what to next add to your collection. I find that when you branch off in some related way, the assortment appears disjointed and often creates yet another “less-completed”, if not unloved collection. It’s OK in the beginning for the exciting new collection, but after just a short time, boredom takes over and a move is made to something else to collect.

This can cause the outgo of a lot of money, which many collectors don’t like to acknowledge. I know this because I am a dealer who buys and sells. But, I see it mostly at flea markets, tag sales and shows. Unfinished collections are selling for pennies on the dollar because they were mostly made to be collectible, maybe overpriced when offered and not really loved when purchased. That is why it is best to buy ONLY what you love, because values of “Made to be Collectible” Lines are generally made to make money for the manufacturer up front and the value can dive after only a short time. Why do you think they retire pieces? They’ve made their money and need to create that frenzy-like feeling about their products as they introduce new items in the line. It’s genious. Hmmm…remember Beanie Babies® ?

If you concentrate your collections, you may create a prized possession to hand down to loved ones that might actually enjoy them. In the process, you might have inadvertently chosen a collectible line that HOLDS its value for more than a month or a year. Oddball collections are hard to love by anyone other than yourself.

Marking Stencils

Stencil is a cut-out form for an alphabets, numbers, symbols and illustrations. Embossing and Marking Stencils provide quality of work and save plenty of time. Stencils are available in a wide variety of materials and fabrication methods. Stainless steel and plastic are the most commonly used materials. Thickness ranges from a few millimeters to 0.040 depending on the components to be placed.

Marking Stencil Material

Stencil material can be a critical variable in the stencil printing process. The dynamics of deposition and release are quite different between metal and plastic stencils.

Plastic Stencils

Plastic stencils have several advantages over metal stencils. Plastic stencils are easy to clean and store. There is no rust problem with plastic. Plastic stencil weighs less than metal stencils. Typically plastic stencils are much thicker than metal stencils and small apertures may require more aggressive cleaning such as high pressure spray or ultrasonic methods. Plastic is more durable and flexible material. Mylar is a special type of plastic usually used in making plastic stencils. It has one side shinning and other side dull to create difference between stenciling side and underside.

The plastic stencil has disadvantages, as well. Since the apertures in the plastic stencil are drilled, only round shapes are possible. Also, since plastic stencil technology is new, they are not as widely available as are stainless steel stencils and may be more expensive. Finally, the plastic stencil may be harmed by metal squeegee blades and, therefore, only polyurethane or special blades (provided by the stencil manufacturer) are advised. Plastic stencils have been recommended when the application requires a wide range of dot heights in a single print pass.

Metal Stencils

Metal stencils are available at comparatively low prices. There is a complete freedom of aperture geometry. Metal stencils are recommended when only small dots are needed. We offer variety of metal marking stencils including brass stencils, zinc stencils and stainless steel stencils.

Zinc stencil letter sets of non-interlocking and interlocking zinc stencils in a range of sizes. zinc stencils are useful for making signs and marking cartons and packing cases.

Brass stencil letter sets of non-interlocking and interlocking zinc stencils in a range of sizes. Brass stencils are useful for making signs and marking cartons and packing cases.

We all know how important home security is and how important it is to make sure that you take all the necessary steps to protect your home and your family. There is a technical side of home security field. It deals with installing an appropriate security system, alarms, video surveillance, door and window locks and other security equipment. This is definitely a necessary part of your home protection. However, some of the burglars don’t try to break in your house the regular way. There is another type of criminals called bogus callers who will try to trick you to get inside your house and steal your belongings. They can work independently or as a team and they have many ways that they may try to use to deceive you.

The most common way how bogus callers will try to get in your house is by trying to present themselves as agents of some type of maintenance or service company. For example, they may tell you that they are from your local electrical, water of gas company and they are there to install some type of equipment or to fix something that is broken or old. They will usually wear a company uniform and may have instruments or installation equipment with them. Bogus callers try to deceive you and they are trying to look as believable as possible. It is possible that bogus callers found out that you placed an order for something to be installed in your home (furniture, for example) and may use this to get in your house. If you do let them inside, they will try to steal your valuables by distracting you one way or another.

There are several ways to protect you from bogus callers. The first rule is not to let anyone you don’t know inside your house until you are completely sure they are who they say they are. If a person who knocked at your door does not look trustworthy, don’t open the door at all. After the person introduced him or her and said that he or she was sent to do some type of work around your house, make sure to check that person’s identification documents. Every respectful utility or maintenance company issues identification documents to its workers. If you have any doubt, call the company and check to make sure that this is, indeed, one of their workers. Utility companies usually have certain ways to make sure that this is one of their employees. You can ask if this person was sent to your house on a work assignment. Also know that there may be several people claiming to be the representatives of a utility or other type of organization. Be even more careful with a group of people since this is a much riskier situation.

If you do let them in, make sure that there is someone in the room when they perform their work. Never leave someone alone in your house if you don’t know or don’t trust him or her. If someone who is claiming to be a repairman or an agent of a utility company tries to distract you or asks you to go to another room or outside of the building, don’t do that. If you call and ask for some service to be performed in your house in advance, you should make sure that you are not alone during the time of the visit. Ask your friends or family to stay with you at your home during that time.

If you follow all the steps described above you will be more secure: you will protect your home, your family and your valuables. The examples above described a situation when bogus callers are trying to identify themselves as repairmen or representatives of utility companies. However, you should know that bogus callers may try to enter your home under other identities. You should be careful at all times when you are dealing with an unknown person. It is better to spend an extra two or three minutes checking the identity of the unknown person then to become a victim of a bogus caller. All you have to do is to be careful and think about your home security.

At FirstHomeSecurity.com you can find a wide variety of home security alarms, personal alarms, as well as self defense products at discount prices.

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for a teen or pre-teen girl or female friend, then you might want to consider a handmade journal. Use these tips to get started, then use your own creativity to create a personalized work of art. These journals also make great birthday or graduation gifts.

To get started, pick out some pretty card stock for the cover, maybe a favorite color of the girl the journal is intended for. I used a paper cutter to cut the piece of paper in half. You should end up with two sheets of paper 4 ¼ x 5 ½ .

Select the paper you will use for the inside pages of the journal. I chose about 50 sheets of unlined copy/printer paper and cut them in half.

Then you get to be creative and decorate the cover. You can look at my example photos for inspiration. For one I used decals used for scrapbooking and card making. I placed a floral border down the left side and used rubber stamps to stamp the girl’s name vertically on a scrap of white card stock that I then glued to the right side of the cover.

On another cover I placed the girl’s name horizontally on the top of the cover, also using rubber stamps to spell out her name. Behind the cardstock that the name was stamped on I glued a piece of mulberry paper (craft paper that is thin like tissue paper) that I had torn around the edges. To finish this journal I placed a large floral sticker in the center of the cover.

To bind the journal together, I used a comb binding machine. If you don’t know someone who has one of these that you can borrow, you can go to a local office supply store like Office Max or Office Depot, and they will either let you do it yourself in their copy department, or they will do it for you for a small fee.

Internet users worldwide, may not realize that there is a
monster, known as spyware, that has taken up residence in their
computers. Infact, there could be several monsters, going by
various names, such as adware, trojans, malware etc. They could
be described as cookie monsters of the internet world.

How do these monsters thrive in a computer ? They feed off the
information they gather about people and often times they are
well fed. These creatures are not conducive to your wellbeing.
They infest and corrupt the workings of a computer and they
transmit personal information to their buddies at the other end
of the internet line. They have lots of such buddies that want
to get to know peoples surfing habits, their online purchases,
their interests, their chats, their credit worthiness, their
birth date and the list goes on and on.

Spyware and adware help the workings of promotional companies.
They can only be successful in their promotions, if they can
target people in an effective manner, by getting to know their
audience as best they can. It is only by understanding peoples
needs, likes and dislikes that they can send out promotional
material with the hope of generating sales. However, sales
materials may only be the tip of the iceberg, and while this may
be more of an annoyance, the infiltration by spyware can lead to
loss of privacy, loss of credit card details and lead to stolen
identity. When personal information is stolen there is no limit
to the extent of damage this can cause and the hardships it can
bring about to an individual or a family.

Spyware and adware have an easy entryway into computer systems.
They usually piggyback with other software downloads, including
shareware, freeware, p2p sharing of files, music downloads etc.
Once lodged into a computer they can reside indefinitely, till
detected and removed.

The solution is to have spyware detection and spyware removal
software.

Many new home embroidery machine owners have to learn on their own with little instructions and thus have to resort to the “trial and error” methods to get satisfactory results. One can certainly learn to embroidery this way but it takes time, money and patience. I have found that one gets better embroidery results consistently in direct proportion to using the right methods and good supplies and eliminating all unknown variables that may cause a problem. The key is to consistently use good embroidery products that won’t cause problems with quality embroidery designs.

The problem is to know what the bad variables are, and how to eliminate them. Here is an example of what I am saying - for this example, we will assume that your embroidery machine is in good working order, that you have learned the embroidery basics and are using the correct embroidery stabilizer methods and have good quality polyester embroidery thread and stabilizers. So you sew out a design and the results aren’t too bad, an outline that is off a little and there are a few parts that don’t line up exactly. So what now? Do you add stabilizer or adjust the tension or just settle for good enough? If you knew that all was right, as we assumed, then you would know that it was an embroidery design problem - because we eliminated all the other variables for our trial. With one variable, it is easy to know and correct the problem, with two it is much harder and with three or more it is very difficult to get the right combination for good results.

There are a lot of lessons about many embroidery subjects available on our web site and even some free tutorials to download.

Terry Carter is the webmaster and author of embroidery articles at

embroidery designs by Thread Artist. He has an article about embroidery software for digitizing and lettering fonts at embroidery software. There is free embroidery digitizing Tutorial at this web address - embroidery by Thread Artists. You can email Terry at this address - ThreadArtist@qx.net
