Viruses, Trojans and Spyware: Protecting yourself.

No user on the internet is safe from assault. Viruses, Trojans and Spyware can all effect your computer by placing annoying ads, tracking your credit card numbers, or even slow it down to a certain extent it is deemed no longer usable. By following through these simple steps, you can help protect yourself from the internet.

High CPU Usage: If your computer seems to be slower than usual, it is very likely that you have been infected. Background services can slow down your computer, and to check performance, enter Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). Then, click on the processes tab. You will be able to see active processes that are running. To find what should be running on your computer, visit http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm.

Check your level of protection: A good way to know whether you are safe or not is by using security tools. Here are some you should try out:
NeWT 2.1: This is a very simple tool to use, and it scans for more than 4000 common security vulnerabilities. Download NeWT here: http://www.tenablesecurity.com/newt.htm
Sumantec security check: This is a free service provided by Symantec. Simply visit here (www.sumantec.com), then select Scan for Security Risks. It will only tell you what vulnerabilities you have, but however it won’t tell you how to fix them.
Infinitive! Port Scanner: Our very own online port scanner! http://infinate.x10hosting.com/phport

Update Yourself: Install all the latest update possible. Service Pack 2 is a good way to start if you’re running Windows XP. Enable Automatic Updates, and make sure you have the latest updates on your PC.

Safe Surfing: Due to Internet Explorer’s high popularity, it is usually safe to change altogether. A common program now is known as FireFox (www.mozilla.com/products/firefox), which is fast, responsive and similar to Internet Explorer. However a major flaw with FireFox is that you will need to install additional plug-ins in order for you to view certain pages.

Make Regular Backups: Prepare for the worst. Make regular backups of your important files and store them on a type of offline storage.

Don’t open suspicious links: If you are sent a link you are not sure about, do not open them, Simple. Another good way is to avoid suspicious sites altogether. Many programs too, bundle with spyware, so when you download them make sure they are stated “Freeware”, nothing else.

Program Protection: Use Anti-Virus and Firewall software. McAfee is a highly recommended product over Symantec, but there are also other free anti-virus/firewall software online such as NOD32. http://www.nod32.com/

If you have been infected: Find cleaning instructions online on sites such as http://vil.nai.com. It will tell you where to locate your infection, and where to find and remove it. System Restore is also a good option on Windows XP. To use System Restore, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System, System Restore. Simply click a restore point and reboot.

You can also remove viruses using the programs listed under Program Protection. To remove Spyware, Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) is a free yet useful tool to use.

Born in Fuente Vaqueros near Granada in 1898, Federico Garcia Lorca was the son of a prosperous farmer and a school teacher mother. It was from Lorca’s mother that he took most influence in early life – she taught him to play music and sing – skills that would lay the foundations for the poet’s sense of rhythm and timing. In 1909 the family moved into Grenada where he would later mingle in artistic circles and wield a great influence amongst his peers. He first studied law at Grenada before moving to university in Madrid to the famous “Residencia de estudiantes” in 1919.

One year earlier, Lorca had his first collections of poems published, entitled “Impresiones y paisajes”. It enjoyed critical acclaim without much commercial success. However, now in Madrid, Lorca was to make friends with a great many influential young Spanish artists, two of the most notable being Salvadore Dalí who needs little introduction, and Luis Buñel, the groundbreaking film maker, who Lorca was to become great friends with. 1919 also saw Lorca get his first break on the stage; he wrote and staged his first play: “El Melefico de la Mariposa”. It didn’t go too well and was laughed off the stage after four shows; the incident was to sour Lorca’s feelings towards the theatre going public forever.

During the twenties, Lorca improved as a poet and playwright and became increasingly involved in the “avant garde” movement becoming a key member of “generation of 27”, a group of poets and artists keen to employ the latest techniques and theories to their medium. In this period he published another three anthologies of poetry including, probably his most well known work, “Romancero Gitano” in 1928. His second play, “Mariana Pineda” had also opened to great acclaim in 1927.

Behind his public success Lorca was struggling to keep his private life together and experienced extreme bouts of depression during this period. His friendship with Buñel and Dali was becoming strained and his attempts to hide his homosexuality from his family were becoming increasingly thin-veiled. During this period his turbulent and often one-sided relationship with sculptor Emilio Alandrén was also collapsing, adding to Lorca’s torments.

In 1930, Lorca left Spain for the USA in order to study English at Columbia University. Lorca was somewhat let down by his first experience of a modern democracy, America’s rampant commercialism and discrimination of minority groups provided Lorca with the fuel to produce some of his most challenging work. His poetry anthology “Poeta en Nueva York” and his play “El Publico” were both penned whilst Lorca was in the USA; indeed, “El Publico” wasn’t to see the light of day until the 1970’s due to the repression of his work under Franco’s dictatorship.

Garcia Lorca’s return to Spain in 1931 coincided with the fall of the Prima Rivera dictatorship and the reestablishment of the Spanish republic. Lorca was asked to head-up a government sponsored theatre company, aimed at bringing classic theatre to rural Spain. During this period Lorca created his celebrated “rural trilogy” of plays: “Bodas de Sangre”, “Yerma” and “La Casa de Bernada Alba”.

The outbreak of the Civil War in 1936 was to mean an untimely end for Garcia Lorca. Ultimately an independent and free-thinking artist, the specific reasons for his murder still remain something of a mystery. We do know that he left for Granada in 1936 where he was arrested and later murdered by Falangists (who would later go on to commit some of the greatest atrocities of the war) and thrown into an unmarked grave in or around Viznar, near Granada. Andalusia was the main stronghold of the nationalist movement and some maintain that when Lorca set out to Granada, it was more than likely he knew he’d never return alive, especially as his brother in law was the Socialist mayor of Grenada at the time.

Lorca was to become one of the great martyrs of the Civil War and in many respects epitomised the free-thinking opposition to Franco’s regime. Franco himself wouldn’t want to hear mention of the author or the circumstances of his death so Lorca’s full oeuvre hasn’t really been in print for much more than 25 years.

His undoubted talents place him in the same bracket as Cervantes and he has gone on to become Spain’s most influential literary figure of the 20th century despite his untimely and, ultimately premature, death at the age of 38.

Mike McDougall has five years experience working as a travel writer and marketeer. He is currently working to provide additional content for Babylon-idiomas, a Spanish language school with an excellent presence in Spain and Latin America.

For this research the focus is on combining the development of dynamic software created in response to user actions, with object oriented, rule based and semantic web techniques. This helps solve problems of mismatch of data between object oriented and relational database systems identified by Ambler [1]. The information is highly structured. Visualisation of this structure in order to represent the relationship between things clarifies the semantics. The meaning can be seen not just by the name of each item but also by the relationship of other items to it. It is envisaged that this taxonomy will provide a design costing capability, but the taxonomy and the techniques used to put it together could be re-used for other purposes. Eventually this taxonomy could become part of an overall ontology. At first this would be a light-weight ontology and this could be evaluated for usefulness before deciding on whether it would need to be more structured. Hunter [2] evaluates engineering ontologies and gives examples. Issues involved in visualisation of light weight ontologies are examined by Fluit et al. [3]. An important reason for creation of an open standards central ontology is that it can be accessed by many different applications. The open standard OWL (Web Ontology Language) is explained by Bechhofer and Carroll [4]. Research of others in this field have been investigated Corcho and Gómez-Pérez [5] and Corcho et al. [6], Noy [7].

The approach involves adapting or creating software systems to provide the visual editor for the source tree, and model builders would create a model by editing this. By doing so they would create a generic model for a particular modelling subject. This is enabled by provision of translation software to translate the taxonomy into a decision support and modelling system. The model users could then use this decision support and modelling system to create their models. These models are a more specific subset of the generic model, and could be applied for their own analyses. Current research is on provision of a translation mechanism to convert information or models into other languages (primarily web based), and to visualise this information. This mechanism has been used in projects with two major aerospace companies. Examples of this are shown later in the article.

The alternative approach involves creation of an elaborator that can output code, in various computer languages or a Meta-programming syntax such as metaL [8] or Simkin [9]. The elaborator needs only a few pieces of information. All information other than that dependant on user interaction, including the names of each node and its relationships to other nodes, needs to be held in a standardised data structure, e.g. a database or structured text file(s). A visual interface to this ontology is required so that model builders can maintain and extend it.

Each node (elaborator) needs to be provided with the following pieces of information -

1) A trigger sent as a result of user action. This is a variable containing a list of value(s) dependant on decisions or requests made by the user the last time the user took action. Each time the user makes a request or a decision, this causes the production of a tree or branch to represent this. This trigger variable is passed around the tree or branch as it is created. The interface to enable this is connected to and reads from the ontology.

2) Knowledge of the relationship between this node and its’ immediate siblings e.g. parents, children, attributes. So the elaborator knows which other elaborators to send information to, or receive from.

3) Ability to read equations. These would be mathematical descriptions of a calculation that contains terms that are items in the ontology. The equation would be contained within an attribute of a class, e.g. The class Material Cost would have an attribute Material Cost Calculation that holds an equation.

4) Basic rules of syntax for the language of the code to be output.

The way the elaborator finds the information held in 2 and 3 is dependent on the action that is taken in 1. Thus, if a suitable ontology is created the basis of the rules of construction of the code to be created are defined 4, and the user has made choices, the user needs to take no further action and just wait for the necessary code to be output.

The translation mechanism is illustrated on our web site http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~phale/ using a simple example.

I am a Researcher Associate in the final year of my. I specialise in applying Semantic Web techniques. My current research is on a technique of ‘User Driven Modelling/Programming’. My intention is to enable non-programmers to create software from a user interface that allows them to model a particular problem or scenario. This involves a user entering information visually in the from of a tree diagram. I am attempting to develop ways of automatically translating this information into program code in a variety of computer languages. This is very important and useful for many employees that have insufficient time to learn programming languages. I am using the Protege ontology editor developed from a project of Stanford University. I am looking to research visualisation, and visualisation techniques to create a human computer interface that allows non experts to create software.

There are a plenty of free e bay.com free auction template services out there and I would like to help you find the service that will best suit your needs by comparing what i feel is the top two contenders. FoamTemplates.com and Auctioninsights.com.

In the left corner… we have www.auctioninsights.com with the number one ranking website in google for the coveted search phrase, “free auction templates” This site contains a large amount of helpful information but the Template Designer does lack customization options. You can enter a title, description, and shipping details like most template makers, but are limited to 3 full size pictures, and there is no easy way to change your color scheme without diving into Html. I would say this site does have an edge on reach because of the helpful e bay.com related information and the site age is much greater so there is a slight reputation boost as well.

In the right corner… we have www.foamtemplates.com. This is a new site and lacks the trusty useful information the opponent has, but it has the strength of being able to not only format your information into tables, but also the ability to easily edit everything there is to edit about your templates design. Many free colors, fonts, and backgrounds are available. You can also upgrade to the premium edition for unlimited picture uploads. When you upload a picture to foam premium, it is optimized, resized, and can also be automatically thumbnailed for you. Great time saver.

I hope you find this review to be helpful in determining which site will best suit your needs. And above all, enjoy the FREE templates and information!

Has someone suggested that you need anger management classes?
The comment may have irritated or worried you, but it is likely
the friend or relative has your best interests in mind and wants
to spare you grief from unrestrained anger outbursts. Enrolling
in anger management classes is no disgrace. In fact, it may be
the best thing you could do for yourself. Consider some of the
benefits of anger management classes.

Advantages of Anger Management Classes

There are many good reasons to sign up for anger management
classes in your area. Find out if any are currently offered and
contact the organization for details. If none are available,
contact a local social service agency or support group location,
like a hospital or church, to suggest that anger management
classes be offered. Here are some of the most obvious and useful
types of support you may be able to receive:

1. Anger management activities. A competent therapist will teach
you a variety of strategies for incorporating anger management
into your lifestyle. Rather than letting irritations build into
irrational rages, you can learn to practice several types of
anger management control that will help you ward off
overpowering emotions that threaten to destroy your well being
by taking specific steps before your anger grows to dangerous
heights.

2. Anger management groups. Your therapist, counselor,
instructor, or group leader may organize participants in the
anger management classes into small groups. In this arrangement,
you can exchange information about the sources of your anger,
your particular triggers, and your strategies to date for coping
with this overwhelming emotion and the fallout from anger
overuse. Learning to interact with others who are struggling
with this emotionally debilitating condition, you will come to
recognize and appreciate common routes to anger management that
are used by many people.

3. Anger management training. Upon enrolling in anger management
classes, you will begin to learn more about both the good and
the bad emotional uses for anger. You will begin to identify
triggers for your emotions, and learn how to redirect
inappropriate anger toward suitable targets. Anger management
strategies, along with anger management exercises, will be
explained so that you can begin using these in your daily
schedule. As you begin to benefit from the results of this
training, you will probably wish your anger management classes
would last longer.

4. Anger management treatment. A trained facilitator who has
completed a certain number of volunteer hours involving
educational preparation may conduct anger management classes. Or
a licensed social worker, therapist, psychologist, or counselor
may coordinate your anger management classes. You may want to
check the credentials of your class leader to be sure that he or
she has the experience and the qualifications to steer you in
the right direction.

While anger management classes can provide plenty of help in
addressing this important part of your personality and
character, you may find it helpful to look at additional sources
of information, including websites like
anger-management-information.com, which offers assistance in
several related areas.

Once you have purchased an Ipaq PDA you next step will be to find a nice bag or case to carry it in. You want to protect your investment with a durable case. You should also make sure that your new case meets your needs. Bag-like cases offer you space as well as safety. Learning about the different styles will help you chose a case or bag that meets your needs.

There are some really good reasons to buy a case or bag for your Ipaq PDA. The main reason may be to protect the PDA from breaking. If you have a sturdy case it can protect your PDA if it is accidentally dropped or stepped on. You can also protect your PDA from weather conditions if you are going to be using it outside often. Water damage to a PDA can be fatal.

You will probably get a generic case from the manufacturer with your PDA. It will most likely be simple and constructed of cardboard and plastic. It may work for simple protection, like keeping your screen from getting scratched, but for more serious protection you need to get another sturdier case. The investment you make in a new case or bag is well worth the protection you get for your investment in your PDA.

The types of cases vary from soft to hard covers. You can also get extra storage. There are soft covered cases that open up like a book with your PDA on one side and room on the other for a notepad. There are hard cases that offer the most extreme protection against any possible harm. Bag type cases are soft and look like a mini duffel bag. They not only house your PDA, but offer many different storage areas for your cell phone, a small snack, car keys or whatever you need to take with you.

These bag type cases reduce the need for you to carry a purse or other bag and use only your PDA case. Another thing you may want to look at is how your PDA fits into the case. If you are going to want to use your PDA while it is in the case and it is a generic case that is not made specifically for your Ipaq then you may end up with problems.

Buttons could be covered, the screen covered or speakers not clear so the sound is muffled. If you hook connections into your PDA often you should make sure you can do so while it is in the case if you intend to keep it in the case while using. Check how easy it is to put your PDA in and take it out of the case. Chose a case that offers you the features you need.

Going over why you need a PDA case or bag and looking into the different options in cases will help you chose the best case for you. Be sure to consider how you use your PDA and if the case will effect how you use it. It doesn’t hurt to try on your PDA case and give it a practice round to see how it will work if you actually buy it.

How familiar does the following sound? Your computer was working fine, but then suddenly started locking up (aka hanging or freezing), rebooting itself (crashing) or shutting down spontaneously? If you know only too well what I am talking about, then read on! Performing the simple steps below can fix the majority of lockup cases.

1. Check for recently installed software or hardware.
If the lockups started to happen after you installed a new peace of hardware, new software program, or new drivers, uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.

2. Run your antivirus program.
One of the first things to do in the case of sudden lockups is to run your antivirus program. Check your antivirus manufacturer’s website for updates and latest virus definition files. (This is absolutely necessary, outdated antivirus is not going to be of any use!) If you don’t have antivirus software installed - or if updates are unavailable - run one of the web-based antivirus scans that some major antivirus vendors like Trend Micro are offering for free. You can find a comprehensive list of available web-based scans and free antivirus programs on http://www.free-antivirus.info.

3. Run some good spyware removal tool.
If your machine is not infected with any viruses, it is still possible that it has some harmful adware or spyware is present. Download and run some good spyware removal tool such as AdAware or Microsoft AntiSpyware. Check http://www.free-antivirus.info for a list of free spyware removal applications.

4. Check for free hard drive space.
When no viruses are found, check out free hard drive space on drive C:. Make sure there is more than 20% of free space available; low disk space can lead to random lockups.

5. Check for overheating.
Overheating is another known cause of lockups. It can be caused by problems with fans inside the case, dust buildup, or other cooling problems. Make sure the power supply fan and CPU fan are running and free of dust buildup. You can check the temperatures inside the case by running Motherboard monitor
http://mbm.livewiredev.com
- make sure the temperatures are within the preset limits. Be very careful while cleaning inside the computer case (use plastic vacuum crevice tool) and NEVER OPEN THE POWER SUPPLY CASE as it contains high voltage.

6. Check the hard disk.
Check the hard disk - it is possible that its logical structure is corrupted. To check the disk for errors, right-click on the disk C: icon in “My Computer”, select the “Tools” tab, check all check boxes in the “Check disk options” field, and press the “Check now” button. It should ask whether you want to schedule the check next time you restart your computer - answer “Yes” and restart your PC. The check will be performed automatically after startup; it can take a while, so be patient. The program will attempt to fix some problems automatically – however, if the hard disk is failing physically, it will need to be replaced. It is also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter (located in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to optimize data placement on the hard disk for increased performance and reliability.

7. Check the memory.
Sometimes random lockups can be attributed to the computer memory (RAM) starting to fail. You can test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic that can be downloaded from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. If memory problems are found, try re-seating the RAM (pull it out and plug it back in). If it doesn’t work, replace the defective RAM.

8. Check for other hardware problems (advanced users).
More hardware-related problems can be diagnosed by running hardware tests from the Ultimate Boot CD that can be downloaded from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com. However, you should only use it if you know what are you doing - some programs on that CD can be dangerous when used inappropriately (for example, some of them can wipe the contents of your hard disk).

9. Update Windows and drivers.
Some lockups can be caused by outdated software components - update your windows and drives by running a windows update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (it’s good idea to run it regularly).

The above steps will help diagnose and eliminate the most common causes of lockups. Hundreds more of other possible scenarios need to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as it all goes down to your particular computer configuration. Asking on PC
troubleshooting forums/newsgroups should help you figure out solutions to not-so-obvious lockup cases.

Michael Woodford is a computer expert from a team that runs HowToFixcomputers.com and CertFAQ.com.

The Age of Outsourcing and Sales and Marketing. Today, now more than ever, companies need to go outside to find partners, consultants, inter-management solutions, and service providers who can help them to cover the range of their needs of sales and marketing. As new rules have been invented regarding lead generation, the internet, and more complexity has come into the sales and business development and marketing model of most companies, it’s very difficult for you to keep up with all of the skill sets that are required in order to be on the top of your company’s game and maintain best practices across all of those functional areas. So, companies are looking increasingly to bring in outsourced service providers who can provide them with fractional management or contract personnel or ongoing outsourcing and consulting to cover the needs that they’re not capable of keeping in house or cannot justify to have on a full time basis.

Outsourcing covers a range of different types of functional areas, including search engine optimization, pay per click management, and product management / product marketing. Many companies go through launch phases of new products or product requirements or definition in new product planning cycles that require having those resources around. But they don’t need them on a permanent basis once a new product has been defined, built, launched, and handed off into the sales force. Copywriting is another area where a lot of companies look to outsource that capability in the marketing side for creating new brochures, collateral, web design copy, etc. Many companies would love to have a graphics design and internet marketing capability in house, but they simply can’t afford or justify doing that on a full time basis, yet this does work perfectly in an outsourced model, where you have a full service web design company that can build your online web site pages, conversion mechanisms, landing pages, microsites, etc. and deploy those for your company. So, these are just some of the many examples of areas where companies need to consider outsourcing in order get all their work done.

At the management level, many companies can’t justify having a full time VP of Marketing or a Director of Business Development, but what they can justify is having an interim management solution or fractional management solution. Some companies that are trying to get to the next level would love to have that top executive on the marketing side but it’s just simply too expensive and they can’t afford it. So what do they do? Often times, they do nothing, and as a result, are not capable of moving their business forward in their target markets and really executing a proactive marketing strategy.

This is a perfect example of where fractional management or outsourcing of a management function or interim management of that function can make a lot of sense and can be done without bearing the full cost of a full time employee. Smart companies are using fractional VPs of marketing who are top marketing professionals to come in and help them plan and execute their marketing programs even if they’re not on a full time basis. This provides a wonderful solution: a company can get a part of a senior marketing manager without paying full time for it. So if you’re company is thinking about how to get its sales and marketing to the next level, you might want to consider what your outsourcing and fractional interim management strategy is and how you can put new resources to work for your company on an interim or part time basis, or on a project basis that will help you to round out the skills sets of your company and accelerate your sales.

Of course, there are some positions in your company that you simply cannot afford to outsource and you need a permanent hiring or recruiting solution for those positions. A good example of that is your VP of sales. Very few companies would consider outsourcing their VP of sales duties to an outsource company. When they do, of course, there are fractional management solutions that are available from companies like ours. But, a more common notion is that a VP of sales has got to be somebody who is really dedicated to full time, permanent or regular position inside the company. In those cases, it makes perfect sense for you to find a recruiting company to help you search for, screen, and find a top sales leader to come into your company and help you build and execute your sales strategy.

A lot of times a company is on sort of the edge of where they’re not sure if it’s time for them to have an in house solution on a permanent basis or if they could go with a fractional solution. Part of the issue is how core the function is to your long term strategy as a company, and how strategic it is really for the execution of your business model. But there are many functions inside a company that cannot be outsourced and must be kept in house. And in those cases, finding a partner who can help you to recruit those resources and bring them into your company is absolutely critical to accelerating your sales and generating top line growth, transforming your sales, and growing your business.

When does it make sense to outsource part of your management sales and marketing or business development management functions to an outsourced service provider? One of the examples is, if your company has a tactical marketing team of marketing communications specialist, doing advertising, internet marketing, direct mail or organizing trade shows, but you can’t afford a full time manager inside the company, you still need somebody who can provide planning, oversight, and leadership to that team. If you’re a CEO, who is an engineering, operations or finance oriented person, you’re probably not the best person to guide this team and bring best practices into the company and marketing.

That person can participate in your quarterly management team meetings, in your company’s planning cycle, including doing strategic marketing planning, developing your go to market strategy, segmenting and maintaining your updated competitive analysis, doing those kinds of projects, or at lease overseeing them at a high level, and helping your company to provide top level oversight of the execution of your marketing programs. That’s a perfect example of where having a fractional VP of marketing, on an outsourced basis from a consulting or service provider, can make a lot of sense. Another example is, when you’ve brought a new product to market and you’ve realized that the best way to bring that product to market is through third party distribution channels and you already have a channel management function set up for system integrators, VARs or OEMS, but what you want to do is you want to deploy a new channel for this particular product line.

This is a perfect project to outsource to an interim VP of business development or interim director of business development…a rainmaker who can go out and research, target, identify, screen, and select a new channel of distribution for your new product line. Or, perhaps your company has already got a system of integrators providing a technical solution that bundles your product into a full turn key solution for your clients, but you’ve now come up with a shrink wrapped, office shelf product that can really be sold with less value added and less integration and you have a channel organization that’s set up to run your system integrators but you don’t have anybody who’s capable of going and finding OEMs or more traditional VARs for that product. Here, you can easily bring in an outsourced or fractional or interim VP of business development to set up that channel for you, get it going, make sure that it’s running smoothly and producing the sell through that you’re looking for, and then handed over to your normal channel management organization.
